Exploring grade 9 students' assumption making when mathematizing

2015

International audience; Making assumptions is a key activity in modelling. The present study aims to explore the variety of assumptions that lower secondary students make in this process. As theoretical basis for the data analysis, we used the modelling cycle by Blum and Leiss (2007) and framed a definition of assumptions. The study was carried out with grade 9 students. The results show three categories of assumptions: (1) parameter assumptions, (2) assumptions for the choice of the mathematical model, and (3) assumptions about task expectations. Assumptions from the first two categories assist students to use extra-mathematical knowledge to construct a mathematical model, while the third …

Parents’ and children’s beliefs about learning Lithuanian language and their relationships to Lithuanian language achievement in Grade 2

2023

Previous studies have shown that as early as elementary school, children’s language skills are determine…

The developmental dynamics of task-avoidant behavior and math performance in kindergarten and elementary school

2012

Besides cognitive factors, children's learning at school may be influenced by more dynamic phenomena, such as motivation and achievement-related task-avoidant behavior. The present study examined the developmental dynamics of task-avoidant behavior and math performance from kindergarten to Grade 4. A total of 225 children were tested for their arithmetic skills in kindergarten and in Grades 1, 2, and 4 of elementary school. Children's task-avoidant behavior in learning situations was rated by their teachers. The results of latent growth curve analyses showed that math performance and task-avoidant behavior develop in tandem: an increase in task-avoidant behavior was related to less improvem…

Agency and Motivation to Achieve Language-learning Objectives among Learners in an Academic Environment in France

2014

Personal agency within the area of learning may be construed as a process wherein learning objectives are achieved through volitional direction and tacit involvement in learning. Within the present study, perceived agency is the degree to which learners believe that the efforts they are putting into the language-learning process is sufficient with respect to the learning objective. Some learners assume that attending classes assiduously generates an entitlement to pass the course, thereby believing that the learning goal has been achieved. In other words, their perception is that they have displayed a high degree of agency in spite of what may sometimes prove to be a very low degree of pers…

Lihasväsytyksen vaikutus reaktionopeuteen multitasking tilanteessa

2012

Eräs keino tämän havaitsemiseen on tarkkailla reaktioaikoja fyysisen väsytyksen aikana. Tässä pro gradu -työssä tutkittiin kuinka fyysinen väsytys vaikuttaa reaktioaikoihin muodostamalla multitasking-tilanne fyysisen väsytyksen ja reaktiotestien välille. Mittaustilanteessa väsytys suoritettiin samanaikaisesti reaktiotestien kanssa…

Effects of musicianship and experimental task on perceptual segmentation

2015

The perceptual structure of music is a fundamental issue in music psychology that can be systematically addressed via computational models. This study estimated the contribution of spectral, rhythmic and tonal descriptors for prediction of perceptual segmentation across stimuli. In a real-time task, 18 musicians and 18 non-musicians indicated perceived instants of significant change for six ongoing musical stimuli. In a second task, 18 musicians parsed the same stimuli using audio editing software to provide non-real-time segmentation annotations. We built computational models based on a non-linear fuzzy integration of basic and interaction descriptors of local musical novelty. We found tha…

The Motivation Scale for the Game (EMJ) : study of the use of the game in educational contexts

2014

Nauka pisania w języku obcym a stymulowanie rozwoju kompetencji lingwistycznych: gramatycznych i leksykalnych

2021

Peripersonal Visuospatial Abilities in Williams Syndrome Analyzed by a Table Radial Arm Maze Task

2020

Williams syndrome (WS) is a genetic deletion syndrome characterized by severe visuospatial deficits affecting spatial exploration and navigation abilities in extra-personal space. To date, little is known about spatial elaboration and reaching abilities in the peripersonal space in individuals with WS. The present study is aimed at evaluating the visuospatial abilities in individuals with WS and comparing their performances with those of mental age-matched typically developing (TD) children by using a highly sensitive ecological version of the Radial Arm Maze (table RAM). We evaluated 15 individuals with WS and 15 TD children in two different table RAM paradigms: the free-choice paradigm, ma…
