Previous studies have documented the detrimental effects of microgravity on human sensorimotor skills. While that work dealt with simple, laboratory-type skills, we now evaluate the effects of microgravity on a complex, realistic instrument-control skill. Twelve participants controlled a simulated power plant during the short-term microgravity intervals of parabolic flight as well as during level flight. To this end they watched multiple displays, made strategic decisions and used multiple actuators to maximize their virtual earnings from the power plant. We quantified control efficiency as the participants’ net earnings (revenue minus expenses), motor performance as hand kinematics and dyn…

Peer-assessment using test exams in a Sakai-based e-learning platform
2021
We report our work on the implementation of a learning innovation based on the combination of peer-assessment and formative learning. The methodology consists on the students themselves to propose, review and select questions for the subsequent creation of a "multiple choice" exam to assess their progress. This learning innovation is carried out with a minimum intervention from the lecturer by using testing tools from the Sakai-based e-learning platform of our institution in combination with several software functions that have been created to automate the aggregation and processing of the students’ contributions. According to the feedback collected from the students, these learning tasks h…
Critical approach to 3D virtual realities for group work
2002
Collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) have been studied extensively during the past few years. In this paper, the concept of virtual reality (VR), and its value for group work are critically examined. To ground the discussions, experiences from a virtual reality project, from 3D chats, and from present CVE applications are analysed in the light of human communication. It is argued that the value of virtual reality is often overemphasised and overrated in the group work context, especially when conce rning desktop virtual realities and generic groupwork without an explicitly defined task or purpose. The main problem with VR is its self-centricity and inadequate support for shared real-li…

Multivariate approach to reveal relationships between sensory perception of cheeses and aroma profile obtained with different extraction methods
2014
A new and original statistical approach was used to compare the effectiveness of 4 different methods to analyse aroma compounds of seven different commercial semi-hard cheeses with regard to their orthonasal sensory perception. Four extraction methods were evaluated: Purge and Trap, Artificial Mouth, Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME) and Solvent-Assisted Flavour Evaporation (SAFE). Among the headspace methods, Artificial Mouth gave the closest representation of the studied product space to the sensory perception one. The SAFE method was complementary to the dynamic headspace methods, as it was very efficient in extracting the heavy molecules but less efficient for extracting the most volat…
Crowdsourcing Cultural Heritage: From 3D Modeling to the Engagement of Young Generations
2016
Monitoring, digitizing and archiving museum artworks represent an important socio-cultural accomplishment and an overcoming in digital preservation today. Cultural heritage is constantly under threat of terrorist attacks and natural disaster. The high costs related to documentation task have prevented a constantly and massive survey activity. The low cost 3D image based acquisition and elaboration techniques of an object, allow to carry out a 3D photorealistic model in a short time. Therefore, a lot of museum adopted these techniques for the artworks archiving. Crowdsourcing activities can significantly speed up survey and elaboration procedures. If, on the one hand, these initiatives can h…
COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND MUSIC – UNITING IN THE MUSIC PROCESS
2018
Object of paper – explore and discover the communication skills and musical synthesis of musical lessons in the process of working with children up to three years. The paper was used for theoretical metod – analysis of scientific literature and empirical research method – use of communication skill assessment tool in music lesson, pedagogical observations and conclusions. The paper updates the communication skills assessment tool for children up to three years old. These are children in a social care institution until a decision is made about his future. The author main conclusions of the study: 1. In order to ensure the environment for children in music classes, in order to promote the devel…

Learning new words is an increasingly common necessity in everyday life. External factors, among which music and social interaction are particularly debated, are claimed to facilitate this task. Due to their influence on the learner’s temporal behavior, these stimuli are able to drive the learner’s attention to the correct referent of new words at the correct point in time. However, do music and social interaction impact learning behavior in the same way? The current study aims to answer this question. Native German speakers (N = 80) were requested to learn new words (pseudo-words) during a contextual learning game. This learning task was performed alone with a computer or with a partner, w…
Do Individual Differences in Cognition and Personality Predict Retrieval Practice Activities on MOOCs?
2020
Online quizzes building upon the principles of retrieval practice can have beneficial effects on learning, especially long-term retention. However, it is unexplored how interindividual differences in relevant background characteristics relate to retrieval practice activities in e-learning. Thus, this study sought to probe for this research question on a massive open online course (MOOC) platform where students have the optional possibility to quiz themselves on the to-be-learned materials. Altogether 105 students were assessed with a cognitive task tapping on reasoning, and two self-assessed personality measures capturing need for cognition (NFC), and grittiness (GRIT-S). Between-group anal…
