On the formation of inclusion complexes at the solid/liquid interface of anchored temperature-responsive PNIPAAM diblock copolymers with γ-cyclodextr…
2017
The thermal responsive behavior of adsorbed layers of diblock copolymers of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) and poly((3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride) (PAMPTMA(+)) with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) at the solid/liquid interface has been investigated using three in situ techniques: null ellipsometry, quartz–crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, and neutron reflectometry. The measurements provided information about the adsorbed amounts, the layer thickness, hydration and viscoelastic properties, and the interfacial structure and composition. The copolymers adsorb to silica with the cationic PAMPTMA(+) blocks sitting as anchors in a flat conformation and the PNIPAAM ch…
Carotenoids of two freshwater amphipod species (Gammarus pulex and G. roeseli) and their common acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus
2004
Carotenoid compositions of two freshwater Gammarus species (Crustacea: Amphipoda) and of their common acanthocephalan parasite Polymorphus minutus were characterized. The effect of carotenoid uptake by the parasite was addressed by comparing the carotenoid content of uninfected and infected female hosts. Using high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), co-chromatography of reference pigments and electron ionization mass spectrometry of collected HPLC fractions (EI-MS), several xanthophylls and non-polar compounds were identified. Seven kinds of carotenoids, mainly xanthophylls, were identified in gammarids. Astaxanthin was predominant, amounting to 40 wt.% of total carotenoid in both uninf…
Ion-Pairing Effects in the Self-Assembly of a Fluorescent Pseudorotaxane
2006
Herein we report on the self-assembly, in a low polarity solvent, of a pseudorotaxane species comprising binaphthyl-26-crown-8 (BN26C8) as the macrocyclic host and anthracenyl-benzylammonium as the threadlike positively charged guest (ABH+). Absorption and luminescence data reveal a very efficient energy transfer process occurring from the binaphthyl to the anthracene singlet excited states. The self-assembly is highly dependent on the nature of the counteranion confirming the crucial role played by it in the competition between the self-assembly process and the formation of ion pairs (ABH+X-). This behavior can be readily evidenced in dilute solutions from the analysis of the luminescence …
Mechanism of interaction of betanin and indicaxanthin with human myeloperoxidase and hypochlorous acid.
2005
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is the most powerful oxidant produced by human neutrophils and contributes to the damage caused by these inflammatory cells. It is produced from H2O2 and chloride by the heme enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO). Based on findings that betalains provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, we performed the present kinetic study on the interaction between the betalains, betanin and indicaxanthin, with the redox intermediates, compound I and compound II of MPO, and its major cytotoxic product HOCl. It is shown that both betalains are good peroxidase substrates for MPO and function as one-electron reductants of its redox intermediates, compound I and compound II. Compoun…
Antioxidant activities of sicilian prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) fruit extracts and reducing properties of its betalains: betanin and indicaxan…
2002
Sicilian cultivars of prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) produce yellow, red, and white fruits, due to the combination of two betalain pigments, the purple-red betanin and the yellow-orange indicaxanthin. The betalain distribution in the three cultivars and the antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts from edible pulp were investigated. In addition, the reducing capacity of purified betanin and indicaxanthin was measured. According to a spectrophotometric analysis, the yellow cultivar exhibited the highest amount of betalains, followed by the red and white ones. Indicaxanthin accounted for about 99% of betalains in the white fruit, while the ratio of betanin to indicaxanthin varied fr…
Xenopus Oocyte’s Conductance for Bioactive Compounds Screening and Characterization
2019
Background: Astaxanthin (ATX) is a lipophilic compound found in many marine organisms. Studies have shown that ATX has many strong biological properties, including antioxidant, antiviral, anticancer, cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, neuro-protective and anti-diabetic activities. However, no research has elucidated the effect of ATX on ionic channels. ATX can be extracted from shrimp by-products. Our work aims to characterize ATX cell targets to lend value to marine by-products. Methods: We used the Xenopus oocytes cell model to characterize the pharmacological target of ATX among endogenous Xenopus oocytes&rsquo
In vitro digestion of betalainic foods. Stability and bioaccessibility of betaxanthins and betacyanins and antioxidative potential of food digesta.
2008
Betalains are considered to be bioactive dietary phytochemicals. The stability of betacyanins and betaxanthins from either fresh foods or manufactured products of cactus pear fruit ( Opuntia ficus indica L. Mill. cv. Gialla and Rossa) and red beet ( Beta vulgaris L. ssp. vulgaris) was assessed in a simulated oral, gastric, and small intestinal digestion and compared with the digestive stability of purified pigments. A minor loss of indicaxanthin, at the gastric-like environment only, and a decrease of vulgaxanthin I through all digestion steps were observed, which was not affected by food matrix. In contrast, food matrix prevented decay of betanin and isobetanin at the gastric-like environm…
Indicaxanthin Dietetics: Past, Present, and Future
2015
The betalamic acid derivatives of betalain pigments (purple-red betacyanins and yellow betaxanthins) are dietary compounds occurring in a few plant foods including beets (Beta vulgaris) and cactus pears (Opuntia spp.). Belonging to betaxanthins, indicaxanthin is rich in yellow cactus pear (Opuntia ficus indica L., Mill). High dietary bioavailability of indicaxanthin in humans, as well as its physicochemical properties, radical-scavenging and antioxidant activities in various experimental models suggest this molecule as a promising nutraceutical agent and open perspectives for its applications. Life-long modulatory activity at the epigenetic level now appears as the new frontier to shed ligh…
