This survey aims to present an initial assessment of the incidence of the phenomenon of witch-hunting in India during 2020, at a particularly dramatic historical moment marked by the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic. The data are partial, but indicative, and have been gathered through daily monitoring of the main Indian newspapers in English and some newspapers (national and local) in Hindi. In India, the belief in witches is a phenomenon that is linked to specific elements both of Hindu cults, whose devotional expressions and folkloric elements are rooted in the Vedic texts, and the belief systems of some indigenous communities. Extended Families as Communities of Religious Experience in Late Seventeenth-Century Eastern Finland

AbstractThis chapter offers an interpretation of extended families as communities of experience in a rural area close to the eastern border of the Swedish realm. Through a case study of lower court records, Kuha examines the social and religious life in a 17th-century farm culminating in the crisis of an extended family. The chapter explores how practices of lived religion shaped the relationship of the community and the individual, and how experiences were negotiated within families and local communities. The analysis highlights the importance of protecting the boundaries of the household as well as the meaning of religious practices in creating cohesion within the community.

El presente texto analiza el corte que supuso en el cine de terror la película Psycho (Psicosis, A. Hitchcok, 1960). Por una parte, desde el punto de vista de la imaginería, desplazó las fuentes del terror hacia fennómenos de la realidad colindante en lugar de seguir en el fantástico romántico o de ciencia ficción; por otra parte, desde la perspectiva del régimen de visibilidad anunció el choque del ojo del espectador con el ejercicio de la violencia física ejercida sobre un cuerpo humano. Así pues, Psycho se mantiene en un momento de fractura del terror clásico americano, pero recurre al montaje allí donde los Splatter movies modernos se entregarían al voyeurismo sin contemplaciones.

Witchcraft as a crime attracted the attention of Polish-Lithuanian society in many aspects at the turn of 17th and 18th centuries. On the one hand, it was connected with a belief in its efficiency, in the existence of witches and sorcerers, and their covenant with the devil. The article analyzes two manuscripts: a prayer „Modlitwa przeciwko czarom i niebezpieczeństwom” and a sermon „ Jako się strzedz czarów i potwarzy o nie”. The sermon utilizes contemporary rhetoric, stresses the importan-ce of sin and appeals to the receivers through fear. In mid-1812, in the village of Tosos (Zaragoza), more than thirty-two of the inhabitants claimed to be possessed. Most of the population accepted the supernatural explanation of maleficence and cast the blame on one woman, Joaquina Martínez, who was labelled a witch and sorceress and whose life was threatened on several occasions thereafter, until she was definitively expelled from the village.
