The Nutcracker Syndrome: New Aspects of Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment
1991
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to study vascular anatomy in 3 patients with the nutcracker syndrome and in 10 healthy volunteers. From these studies an abnormal branching of the superior mesenteric artery from the aorta was identified as being the cause of the nutcracker syndrome. Consequently, surgical transposition of the left renal vein to achieve an unobstructed renal venous backflow was performed successfully in 2 patients, while 1 underwent nephrectomy. In 1 patient adjuvant ureteral instrumentation became necessary to aid occlusion of persisting shunts between peripelvic venous varicosities and the urinary tract. Awareness of the pathophysiology of the nutcracker syndrome …
New Neandertal remains from Cova Negra (Valencia, Spain).
2005
New Neandertal fossils from the Mousterian site of Cova Negra in the Valencia region of Spain are described, and a comprehensive study of the entire human fossil sample is provided. The new specimens significantly augment the sample of human remains from this site and make Cova Negra one of the richest human paleontological sites on the Iberian Peninsula. The new specimens include cranial and postcranial elements from immature individuals and provide an opportunity to study the ontogenetic appearance of adult Neandertal characteristics in this Pleistocene population. Children younger than 10 years of age constitute four of the seven minimum number of individuals in the sample, and this rela…
Where Has All the Trading Gone? A Network Approach to European Stock Exchanges and Alternative Trading Venue
2011
This paper investigates the network features of European trading venues by analyzing the behavior of simultaneously quoted stock. Equity trading venues include both regulated Stock Exchanges (SEs) and Alternative Trading Venues (ATVs) and these represent the nodes of our network. The connections among these nodes are determined by choices of investors to exploit various venues in which a stock may be traded. Using trading volume data of nearly 22,000 equities we use social network analysis to measure prestige and connectivity between the various trading venues between 2005 and 2009. We find that the evolution of ATVs (including multi-lateral trading venues BATS, Chi-X and Turquoise, as well…
Spatial and temporal distribution of ooids along a Jurassic carbonate ramp: Amellago outcrop transect, High-Atlas, Morocco
2010
Carbonate ramp systems are widespread throughout the geological record, but very few areas have seismic-scale, continuous and structurally undeformed outcrops that allow reliable interpretation of facies distributions and stacking patterns. The Amellago outcrop shows the detailed depositional and stratigraphic relationships of an ooid-dominated ramp system that is almost completely exposed along a dip profile (37 km long and 1000 m thick) in the Lower to Middle Jurassic of the southern High Atlas, Morocco. Ammonite and brachiopod fauna provide excellent biostratigraphic control on small scale stacking patterns. At Amellago, the evolution of depositional environments is evident at different …
A record of the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary climatic variation on the southern margin of the Tethys : clay minerals and palynofacies of the early Cr…
2005
Abstract In order to precise the paleogeographic extension of the climatic variation known at the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary, the sedimentary organic matter (palynofacies and Rock-Eval) and the clay minerals content of Berriasian sediments of the Sidi Kralif Formation are studied on the Jebel Meloussi section, central Tunisia. Standard sedimentological and palynofacies analysis allow to reconstruct the bathymetric curve and the sequence stratigraphic scheme. Using existing biostratigraphy based on calpionellids and ammonite zonation, the sequence stratigraphic interpretation can be correlated with the established eustatic chart. Clay mineral assemblages are characterized by a shift in the…
Palaeoceanographic significance of the Tethyan ‘Livello Selli’ (Early Aptian) from the Hybla Formation, northwestern Sicily: biostratigraphy and high…
2002
High-resolution micropalaeontological and chemostratigraphic records for the Hauterivian–Aptian succession outcropping at Calabianca (NW Sicily) provide new insight into the palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic evolution of the Tethys Ocean. Calcareous nannofossil and planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy together with δ13C chemostratigraphy allowed the identification of a hiatus in the Barremian and a major one including most of the Upper Aptian, the entire Lower Albian and part of the Middle Albian. The Livello Selli equivalent was identified on the basis of lithology and well constrained by calcareous plankton biostratigraphy as well as by the δ13C curve. The multi-proxy record from …
Guenon Radiation is Enriched by a New Species that Demonstrates an Evolutionary Complexity with Which we are yet to Become Familiar
2012
th September described this discovery to the scientific community (1). As is becoming increasingly frequent these days, given the high number of scientific articles, the media news reached us faster than the scientific information. The area known as TL2, a few hundred km as the crow flies south- west from the city of Kisangani, famous for its manufacturing, and important port on the Zaire river, is still uncontaminated and houses several important endemisms. This new species, studied in the area since 2007, on the basis of first sightings by the inhabitants of the zone and local hunters, has been named Cercopithecus lomamiensis. C.lomamiensis (CLO) is a tree-dweller and has been described i…
Scheelite-Bearing Metalliferous Sequences of the Peloritani Mountains, Northeastern Sicily (with some Remarks on Tungsten Metallogenesis in the Calab…
1988
The Peloritani Mountains (Northeastern Sicily) are part of a segment of the Hercynian chain recognized in the Calabrian-Peloritan Arc, geotectonically defined by a pre-Hercynian crystalline basement (Aspromonte Nappe + Mandanici Unit) overthrust and overturned on its Paleozoic (Cambro-Ordovician up to Devonian Carboniferous) volcanosedimentary cover. Tungsten (scheelite) and associated polymetallic stratabound ores, more or less intensely affected by the pre-Hercynian and Hercynian tectonometamorphic events, are confined to the pre-Hercynian basement. In particular, the most significant scheelite-tourmaline (arsenopyrite) and scheelite-carbonate-quartz (albite) mineralizations could be cons…
Overview of the Spirit Mars Exploration Rover Mission to Gusev Crater: Landing site to Backstay Rock in the Columbia Hills
2006
Spirit landed on the floor of Gusev Crater and conducted initial operations on soil covered, rock-strewn cratered plains underlain by olivine-bearing basalts. Plains surface rocks are covered by wind-blown dust and show evidence for surface enrichment of soluble species as vein and void-filling materials and coatings. The surface enrichment is the result of a minor amount of transport and deposition by aqueous processes. Layered granular deposits were discovered in the Columbia Hills, with outcrops that tend to dip conformably with the topography. The granular rocks are interpreted to be volcanic ash and/or impact ejecta deposits that have been modified by aqueous fluids during and/or after…
