Analysis of Profiles of Family Educational Situations during COVID-19 Lockdown in the Valencian Community (Spain)

2022

Due to the pandemic (COVID-19), the education system in Spain was forced to close for three months, creating an unprecedented situation: improvised distance schooling. Family characteristics and their life situations with Information and Communication Technology use would be aspects to be studied as educational conditioning factors. This paper presents the ways in which a representative sample of families in the Valencian Community (Spain) assumed the education of their children during the lockdown. Mixed methods (quantitative -surveys-/qualitative -focus groups-) are used. Multivariate profiles are studied (k-means cluster) that summarise the life circumstances, represented by composite in…

Dipolar Rings of Microscopic Ellipsoids: Magnetic Manipulation and Cell Entrapment

2016

We study the formation and dynamics of dipolar rings composed by microscopic ferromagnetic ellipsoids, which self-assemble in water by switching the direction of the applied field. We show how to manipulate these fragile structures and control their shape via application of external static and oscillating magnetic fields. We introduce a theoretical framework which describes the ring deformation under an applied field, allowing to understand the underlying physical mechanism. Our microscopic rings are finally used to capture, entrap and later release a biological cell via magnetic command, i.e. performing a simple operation which can be implemented in other microfluidic devices which make us…

Efficacy of poly(lactic acid)/carvacrol electrospun membranes against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans in single and mixed cultures

2018

Carvacrol (CAR) is one of the most promising essential oil components with antimicrobial activity. New technologies aimed to incorporate this active molecule into carrier matrix to improve the stability and prolong the biological activity. The goal of this study was to investigate the feasibility of incorporating CAR into electrospun membranes of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) for potential applications as active antimicrobial system. To this end, PLA membranes containing homogeneously dispersed CAR were successfully prepared and a series of systematic tests including morpho-mechanical properties, in vitro release rate, and antimicrobial/antibiofilm activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Can…

Electrocardiographic Imaging for Atrial Fibrillation: A Perspective From Computer Models and Animal Experiments to Clinical Value

2021

[EN] Electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) is a technique to reconstruct non-invasively the electrical activity on the heart surface from body-surface potential recordings and geometric information of the torso and the heart. ECGI has shown scientific and clinical value when used to characterize and treat both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Regarding atrial fibrillation (AF), the characterization of the electrical propagation and the underlying substrate favoring AF is inherently more challenging than for ventricular arrhythmias, due to the progressive and heterogeneous nature of the disease and its manifestation, the small volume and wall thickness of the atria, and the relatively large…

Prediction of CRT Activation Sequence by Personalization of Biventricular Models from Electroanatomical Maps

2020

[EN] Optimization of lead placement and interventricular delay settings in patients under cardiac resynchronization therapy is a complex task that might benefit from prior information based on models. Biophysical models can be used to predict the sequence of electrical heart activation in a patient given a set of parameters which should be personalized to the patient. In this paper, we use electroanatomical maps to personalize the endocardial activation of the right ventricle, and the different tissue conductivities in a pig model with left bundle branch block, to reproduce personalized biventricular activations. Following, we tested the personalized heart model by virtually simulating card…

TOWERS, URNS AND CASTLETS. HISTORICAL EVIDENCE OF ANCIENT SYSTEMS OF WATER SUPPLY AND CONVEYANCE IN PALERMO

2016

Polysaccharide nanocrystals as fillers for PLA based nanocomposites

2016

The development of green nanocomposites based on biopolymers and bio-based nanofillers has attracted over the recent years the attention of academic and industrial research. Indeed, these nanocomposites could replace some oil-derived polymers and thus helping to overcome environmental problems. In this regard, PLA as matrix and polysaccharide nanocrystals as fillers are the most promising components to obtain high-performance green bio-nanocomposites suitable for different applications, particularly for packaging and biomedical applications. Indeed, at present, due to its processability, mechanical and biological properties, as well as its commercial availability, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) po…

Effect of Sheep Wool Fibers on Thermal Insulation and Mechanical Properties of Cement-Based Composites

2019

The use of sheep wool as a filler of cement in order to produce mortar or plaster involves several advantages for environment and energy. Moreover, it is considered as a waste and, therefore, its use is characterized by low cost. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of wool fibers on thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of cement. The samples were prepared using wool fibers, obtained from a breed of Sicilian sheep, with three different lengths (i.e., 1, 6, and 20 mm). Furthermore, in order to evaluate the influence of fiber content, the samples were prepared by varying the fiber weight fraction. The thermal conductivity of the samples was analyzed by using a heat flo…

Coperture in vetro come opportunità di rigenerazione urbana

2013

Often historic centers preserve archaeological finds unable to talk about themselves, appeared on the scene of the city, that can now live with the people without stopping it. The reading of the historical centers’ layers can regenerate the historic structure and reconstruct the identity of the places. The remains can be protected and shown to the public and the heritage protection can be part of an overall project with attention to the quality of life, creating opportunities for historical memory, enhancement and tourist attraction. In particular, in the last decades, the solutions using mainly glass to cover the finds have become more widespread. The aim of this article is to analyze some…

Il recupero e la messa in valore della Judería di Segovia

2013

The Spanish town of Segovia, World Heritage Site, launched a process of valorisation of its historical centre, supporting conservation and musealisation of monuments as well as encouraging recovery of private houses, particularly in the Judería District. Here, thanks to the Program Área de Rehabilitación de Centro Histórico (ARCH), Segovians were encouraged to go back to the historical center. The Oficina Técnica de Rehabilitación coordinated activities and funding, promoted the participation of owners and entrepreneurs, sensitised citizens on the issues of cultural heritage. The results obtained in the Judería District were so good that ARCH has been adopting in the next district las Canon…
