[Background] Low-temperature growth and fermentation of wine yeast can enhance wine aroma and make them highly desirable traits for the industry. Elucidating response to cold in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is, therefore, of paramount importance to select or genetically improve new wine strains. As most enological traits of industrial importance in yeasts, adaptation to low temperature is a polygenic trait regulated by many interacting loci.

AbstractUnderstanding the genetic basis of adaptation is one of the main enigmas of evolutionary biology. Among vertebrates, hemoglobin has been well documented as a key trait for adaptation to different environments. Here, we investigate the role of hemoglobins in adaptation to ocean depth in the diverse teleost order Gadiformes, with species distributed at a wide range of depths varying in temperature, hydrostatic pressure and oxygen levels. In response to different adverse conditions, most eukaryotic organisms, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, downregulate protein synthesis through the phosphorylation of eIF2α (eukaryotic initiation factor 2α) by Gcn2, a highly conserved protein kinase. Gcn2 also controls the translation of Gcn4, a transcription factor involved in the induction of amino acid biosynthesis enzymes. Here, we have studied the functional role of Gcn2 and Gcn2-regulating proteins, in controlling translation during temperature downshifts of TRP1 and trp1 yeast cells. To understand how cells regulate each step in the flow of gene expression is one of the most fundamental goals in molecular biology. In this work, we have investigated several protein turnover-related steps in the context of gene expression regulation in response to changes in external temperature in model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We have found that the regulation of protein homeostasis is stricter than mRNA homeostasis. Aggregation and gelation of globular proteins can be an advantage to generate new forms of nanoscale biomaterials based on the fibrillar architecture. Here, we report results obtained by exploiting the proteins' natural tendency to self-organize in 3D network, for the production of new material based on BSA for medical application. Uhlmann number in translational invariant systems

We define the Uhlmann number as an extension of the Chern number, and we use this quantity to describe the topology of 2D translational invariant Fermionic systems at finite temperature. We consider two paradigmatic systems and we study the changes in their topology through the Uhlmann number. Through the linear response theory we linked two geometrical quantities of the system, the mean Uhlmann curvature and the Uhlmann number, to directly measurable physical quantities, i.e. the dynamical susceptibility and to the dynamical conductivity, respectively.
Temperature-dependent small RNA expression in Drosophila melanogaster

Temperature has a major impact on gene expression in ectotherms. But until recently, it was not clear in which way, if any, small non-coding RNAs such as miRNAs or piRNAs contribute to thermosensitive gene regulation. We have recently shown that temperature-responsive miRNAs in Drosophila drive adaptation to different ambient temperatures on the transcriptome level. Moreover, we demonstrated that higher temperatures lead to a more efficient piRNA-dependent transposon silencing, possibly due to heat-induced unfolding of RNA secondary structures. Extraordinary stability of hemocyanins from L. polyphemus and E. californicum studied using infrared spectroscopy from 294 to 20 K

International audience; Hemocyanins are large oligomeric respiratory proteins found in many arthropods and molluscs. Here we give infrared spectroscopic evidence of a high stability towards exposure to sub-zero temperatures for hemocyanins from the arthropods Limulus polyphemus and Eurypelma californicum at different pH values. Small but distinct temperature induced changes of the secondary structure were observed, but a stable core of at least 40% α-helical structure is preserved as identified in the infrared spectra obtained between 294 and 20 K.
