SHORT-TERM VARIABILITY OF 24H SYSTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE IS ASSOCIATED WITH MICROALBUMINURIA IN PATIENTS WITH PRIMARY HYPERTENSION
2015
Objective: Limited and conflicting data are available about the association between shortterm blood pressure (BP) variability and urinary albumin excretion rate (uAER). The objective of our study was to analyze the relationships between microalbuminuria, defined as an uAER between 20 and 200mg/ min, and shortterm BP variability, assessed as average real variability (ARV), weighted standard deviation (SD) of 24h BP, and as SD of daytime and nighttime BP. Design and method: The study population consisted of 315 untreated essential hypertensives with normal estimated glomerular filtration rate (> 60ml/min/1.73 m2), which underwent 24h ambulatory BP monitoring and 24h uAER determination. Result…
Micelles in Mixtures of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and a Bolaform Surfactant
2006
Mixtures composed of water, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a bolaform surfactant with two aza-crown ethers as polar headgroups (termed Bola C-16) were investigated by modulating the mole ratios between the components. The two surfactants have ionic and nonionic, but ionizable, headgroups, respectively. The ionization is due to the complexation of alkali ions by the aza-crown ether unit(s). Structural, thermodynamic, and transport properties of the above mixtures were investigated. Results from surface tension, translational self-diffusion, and small angle neutron scattering ( SANS) are reported and discussed. Interactions between the two surfactants to form mixed micelles result in a com…
Le Fratture di Rotula
2015
Patellar fractures are relatively uncommon, accounting for approximately 1% of all fractures. Non-operative treatment represents the best choice for undisplaced patellar fractures. However, surgery becomes necessary when fractures are displaced by more than 2 mm, and may include open reduction and internal fixation. Accurate reduction and rigid fixation are required in order to allow early knee mobilization and to obtain a better clinical outcome. Several techniques have been described for patellar fracture fixation, such as tension band wiring, interfragmentary screw fixation, and the combination of screw fixation and cerclage. In this article up-to-date diagnosis, classification and treat…
A Locked Intraosseous Nail for Transverse Patellar Fractures: A Biomechanical Comparison with Tension Band Wiring Through Cannulated Screws.
2018
Background Displaced transverse patellar fractures require open reduction and internal fixation. State-of-the-art stabilization techniques are tension band wiring (TBW) using Kirschner wires or cannulated screws. These techniques are associated with high rates of secondary fracture displacement, implant migration, implant prominence, wound-healing disturbances, and the need for implant removal. Recently, a locked intraosseous patellar nail prototype was developed. The aim of the present study was to investigate the biomechanical performance of this nail compared with TBW using cannulated screws. Methods Seven paired fresh-frozen human cadaveric knees were stripped of all soft tissues except…
(i) Comminuted patellar fractures
2006
Summary Purpose of review This article reviews current best practice for the diagnosis and treatment of comminuted patellar fractures. Recent findings Patellar fractures make up about 1% of all fractures. As a rule, fractures of the patella are caused by direct trauma to the knee. A transverse fracture is the most common fracture type. Open reduction and internal fixation is the treatment of choice for the majority of displaced patellar fractures. Treatment must achieve anatomic reduction of the articular surface and reestablish the continuity of the extensor mechanism. Tension-band wiring, interfragmentary screw fixation and a combination of cerclage wiring and screw fixation are the most …
Patient-specific computational evaluation of stiffness distribution in ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm
2021
Quantifying local aortic stiffness properties in vivo is acknowledged as essential to assess the severity of an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA). Recently, the LESI (local extensional stiffness identification) methodology has been established to quantify non-invasively local stiffness properties of ATAAs using electrocardiographic-gated computed tomography (ECG-gated CT) scans. The aim of the current study was to determine the most sensitive markers of local ATAA stiffness estimation with the hypothesis that direct measures of local ATAA stiffness could better detect the high-risk patients. A cohort of 30 patients (12 BAV and 18 TAV) referred for aortic size evaluation by ECG-gated…
Anterior dislocation in a total knee arthroplasty: A case report and literature review.
2015
Dislocations of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are an uncommon injury and only few cases of anterior dislocations have been reported. We report a rare case of anterior dislocation of a 10-year-old posterior stabilized total knee arthroplasty in a 74-year-old woman. The patient was successfully treated by close reduction of the dislocation followed by immobilization in full extension with a long leg cast. Because of a high risk of neurovascular complications, a high index of suspicion for vascular injury must be maintained. For this reason, a proper diagnosis is required and immediate reduction is recommended.
Meu caro amigo Lucio, Ciao
2012
Quando eu era criança, imaginava que tudo na Itália tinha o cheiro e a forma das músicas de Lucio Dalla. Do primeiro Lucio Dalla.
The contribution of the pre-existing structures in mountain belt evolution: the example of the negative inversion in the Northen Sicily
2004
Syn-orogenic extension has been recognised in Northern Sicily. Mesoscopic analysis has been carried out in three key areas, where folded-and-thrust Mesozoic-to-Tertiary rocks crop-out. The three examples are inherent to Portions Of tectonic Units Which occupy progressively more internal positions in the Sicilian chain from west to east. The extensional deformation is mainly represented by low-angle normal faults and shear bands. A common kinematic process seems to affect the other sector of the chain during the extension and is represented by a generalized negative inversion of previous layer-parallel shear bands and detachments related to the thrusting. The extensional deformation occurred…
Relationships of young adults with foster care backgrounds : tensions and management strategies
2021
The present study focuses on experiences of relational tensions and management strategies in family relationships among 18 young adults with foster care backgrounds who participated in interviews. In the analysis drawing from relational dialectics, three main tensions were revealed in the participants' relationships with birth and foster family members or in their romantic relationships: the dialectics of emotional distance‐closeness, integration‐separation and sameness‐otherness. In addition, the tension of the childhood dialectic of responsibility was identified in this study. The tensions were managed utilizing eight strategies. The findings highlight the importance of giving a voice to …
