Control of matrix interferences by multiple linear regression models in the determination of arsenic and lead concentrations in fly ashes by inductiv…

2010

A multiple linear regression technique was used to evaluate and correct the matrix interferences in the determination of As and Pb concentrations in fly ashes by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The direct determination of As and Pb in SRM 1633b by ICP-OES failed to obtain the certified concentrations, except in a couple of cases. However, it proved possible to use the multiple linear regression (MLR) technique to correct the determined concentrations to a satisfactory level. This method of correction is based on the multiple regression line obtained from the analysis of 19 synthetic mixtures of matrix and analyte elements (Al, As, Ca, Fe, Pb, and Si) at five concen…

The Right to Food Sovereignty in International Law

2021

With the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP) in 2018, the right to food sovereignty was officially included in an international legal document for the first time. The concept of food sovereignty has been widely analyzed in sociology and politics, whilst it is rarely described in the legal context. This article aims to clarify the relationship among existing norms of international law such as the right to self-determination, the right to development and the right to adequate food with the right to food sovereignty. In order to clarify this relationship the article compares them with food sovereignty as described in the UND…

Molecular Basis for the Regulation of Cell Fate by the Lethal (2) Giant Larvae Tumour Suppressor Gene of Drosophila Melanogaster

2007

Tumour suppressor genes act as recessive determinants of cancer. Their function is required for normal cell growth and differentiation during development. When both alleles of these developmental genes are inactivated, cell growth becomes unrestricted. In Drosophila, a series of genes have been identified which when mutated produce tissue-specific tumours. Of these the lethal(2)giant larvae (l(2)gl) gene is the best studied. Homozygous l(2)gl mutations cause the development of malignant tumours in the brain and the imaginal discs. Genomic DNA from the l(2)gl locus has been cloned, introduced back into l(2)gl mutant animals by P-element-mediated transformation and shown to restore normal dev…

Effect of the abundance of three predominating copepod species on adequate sample volume and sample size in Bransfield Strait (Antarctic Peninsula) a…

1992

The effect on adequate sample size and sample volume of the abundances of three predominant copepod species, Metridia gerlachei, Calanus propinquus and Calanoides acutus, were studied in Bransfield Strait (Antarctic Peninsula) in the austral summer of 1988–1989 and waters north of the Weddell Sea in 1989–1990. Copepod abundances were higher in the area north of the Weddell Sea, with the exception of Metridia gerlachei, which was evenly distributed over both areas. Local (intra-station) patchiness was not found, indicating random distribution over small areas. In the assessment of inter-station variability in Bransfield Strait, with standard error of the mean set arbitrarily at 20% of the av…

A phenomenological research of the motivational factors of kendo practitioners in Serbia

2016

Kendo is a Japanese martial art that has been gaining interest over the past couple of decades and is considered as one of the most popular budo martial arts. The purpose of this study was to understand and explain what motivates highly skilled kendo practitioners to practice and compete, and how did their sources of motivation change throughout their kendo engagement. Phenomenological approach was used to look into the experiences of kendo practitioners in order to understand better their motivation behind this martial art. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight kendo practitioners from Serbia in their native language. Before data collection, a pilot study was conducted, and …

The role of teachers’ controlling behaviour in physical education on adolescents’ health-related quality of life : test of a conditional process model

2019

Students’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL) may depend on the extent to which the school environment fostered by their teacher is perceived as autonomy-supportive. We tested a conditional process model in a physical education context in which students’ perception of their teachers’ autonomy-supportive behaviour moderated the relationship between perceived controlling behaviour and HRQoL via need frustration. School students (N = 1042) completed self-report measures of perceived teachers’ autonomy support, perceived controlling behaviour, need frustration, and HRQoL. As predicted, the effect of perceived teachers’ controlling behaviour on HRQoL was mediated by need frustration. Perceive…

Informal learning and wellbeing outcomes of gameplay and their associations with gameplay motivation

2023

Educational functions of digital games are often seen only in the light of the serious and purposeful activities that aim for learning outcomes, in contrast with noneducational games that are designed for entertainment. The focus of this paper is in studying players’ learning outcomes from playing non-educational games, and how these relate to wellbeing outcomes of playing, and gaming motivation. The data for this study was collected via a survey (N = 1,202) in the United Kingdom and the United States. The survey respondents answered the question regarding what players perceive they have learnt by playing digital games. A generic datadriven qualitative content analysis of the responses to t…

A “Principle-Based” Approach to Intervention by Invitation in Civil Wars

2019

This contribution challenges the idea of the existence of a one-size-fits-all rule that always prohibits or permits outside forcible intervention upon the request of a government engaged in a civil war. Civil wars are complex situations. It seems quite unrealistic to make abstractions of the “topography” of the conflict between the legal principles concretely at stake in each case. Indeed, if self-determination is the main rationale behind the thesis of strict-abstentionism, an important question to ask is whether self-determination always represents an obstacle to external intervention in civil wars to support the established government. Furthermore, the principle of negative equality is s…

Being active in pregnancy : Theory-based factors associated with physical activity among pregnant women

2019

Although regular physical activity is recommended for pregnant women, compared to pre-pregnancy, antenatal physical activity often reduces or ceases completely. Drawing from the theory of planned behavior, self-determination theory, and theory on self-control, we aimed to test an integrative model of physical activity in a sample of pregnant women. The current study was conducted in Brisbane, Australia, in 2014–2015 using a prospective-correlational design with a one-week follow-up. Participants (N = 207, Time 1; Meanage = 30.03 years, SDage = 4.49 years) completed an initial survey measuring: intrinsic motivation from the self-determination theory, social cognitive constructs from the theo…
