The diterpenoids from the genus Sideritis

2006

ABSTRACT: The genus Sideritis consists of 100-150 or more species, growing mainly in the countries around the Mediterranean area. The genus is particularly rich in diterpenoids, occurring in almost all the species, and shows many different carbon skeleta. Several species are still used in traditional medicine. Recent studies indicated the occurrence of interesting biological activities, like anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, anti-HIV replication, antifeedant, antiulcerogenic, analgesic, and antihypoglycaemic.

Assessment of synthetic chemicals for disruption of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus response to attractant-baited traps in an urban environment

2012

The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), is one of the most severe pests of ornamental palm species in urban areas of Mediterranean countries. Aiming to discover inhibitory semiochemicals for RPW population management in urban environments, we conducted electroantennographic (EAG) screenings of 17 commercially available synthetic compounds, representing three groups of plant volatiles (isoprenoids, phenyl propanoid derivatives and fatty acid derivatives) known for their repellent effects toward insects. These tests were followed by trap-based screenings of EAG-active menthone, alpha-pinene and methyl salicylate, singly and in combination, und…

A review of the biological and pharmacological activities of saponins.

1996

Summary This paper reviews the important biological and pharmacological activities of saponins reported over the last few years. These include cancer-related activity, as well as antiphlogistic and antiallergic, immunomodulating, antihepatotoxic, antiviral, hypoglycemic, antifungal and molluscicidal activities. The action of saponins on the cardiovascular, central nervous, and endocrine systems and other miscellaneous effects are also discussed.

Two New Triterpene Saponins from Cyclamen africanumBoiss. & Reuter

2012

Two new oleanane-type triterpene saponins, afrocyclamins A and B (1 and 2, resp.), were isolated from a MeOH extract of the roots of Cyclamen africanum Boiss. & Reuter, together with three known triterpenoid saponins, lysikokianoside, deglucocyclamin I, and its dicrotalic acid derivative. The structures were elucidated, on the basis of 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and mass spectrometry as (3β,20β)-13,28-epoxy-16-oxo-3-{O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(12)-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(14)-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(12)]-α-L-arabinopyranosyl}oxy}oleanan-29-al (1) and (3β,16α,20β)-16,28,29-trihydroxy-olean-12-en-3-yl O-4-O-(4-carboxy-3-hydroxy-3-methyl-1-oxobutyl)-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(12)-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(14)-O-[β-…

A dammarane-type saponin from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus.

1993

A new C31 dammarane-type triterpenoid saponin has been isolated from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus. Its structure was elucidated to be ampelozigenin-15 alpha-O-acetyl- 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic methods, and by chemical transformations. Ampelozigenin is a novel triterpene, (20R,22R)-16 beta,22:16 alpha, 30-diepoxydammar-24(24')- methylene-3 beta, 15 alpha, 20-triol.

α-L-rhamnosidases: Old and New Insights

2007

L-Rhamnose is a component of plant cell wall pectic polysaccharides (Mutter et al., 1994; Ridley et al., 2001), glycoproteins (Haruko and Haruko, 1999) and secondary metabolites such as anthocyanins (Renault et al., 1997), flavonoids (Bar-Peled et al., 1991) and triterpenoids (Friedman and McDonald, 1997). It has also been found in bacterial heteropolysaccharides (Hashimoto and Murata, 1998), rhamnolipids (Ochsner et al., 1994) and in the repeating units of the O-antigen structure of the lipopolysaccharide component of bacterial outer membranes (Chua et al., 1999). Some rhamnosides are important bioactive compounds, e.g. cytotoxic saponins (Bader et al., 1998; Yu et al., 2002), antifungal p…

Structurally bound lipids in peat humic acids

2001

Humic acids from highly decomposed peat were subjected to oxidation with alkaline cupric oxide (CuO) at 170°C (single oxidation). Oxidation products were isolated as three fractions, oxidized humic acids, fulvic acids and lipophilic compounds. Isolated oxidized humic acids were subsequently re-oxidized (sequential oxidation) under the same conditions, and released lipophilic compounds were isolated. Lipids released during single and sequential oxidations were determined using capillary gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Identified compounds accounted for 3.3 and 0.12 wt.% of humic acid content, respectively. Lipid profiles of lipophilic fractions released during single and sequential…

CHROMATOGRAPHIC DETECTION OF SESQUITERPENE LACTONES IN PARTHENIUM PLANTS FROM NORTHWEST ARGENTINA

1999

Several chloroformic extracts containing some sesquiterpene lactones from autochtonous plants of Parthenium hysterophorus, collected in the province of Salta (Argentina), were separated and identified by high performance reversed-phase liquid chromatography with C18 column and propanol-water mobile phases, using gradient elution and concentrations of propanol larger than 10% (v/v). Lactones previously purified and characterized by H1 RMN, C13 RMN, IR, and mass spectrometry, were used as standards. The objective of the study was to check if the nature of the lactones was modified according to the altitude of the region where the plants were grown. Among the lactones, five were already descri…
