Towards tunable defect arrangements in smectic liquid crystal shells utilizing the nematic–smectic transition in hybrid-aligned geometries

2012

We produce and investigate liquid crystal shells with hybrid alignment—planar at one boundary, homeotropic at the other—undergoing a transition between the nematic (N) and smectic-A (SmA) phases. The shells display a dynamic sequence of patterns, the details depending on the alignment agents and on the diameter and thickness of the shell. In shells of sufficient diameter we typically find a transient striped texture near the N–SmA transition, stabilising into a pattern of tiled, more or less regularly spaced focal conic domains in the SmA phase. The domain size and spacing decrease with reduced shell thickness. In case of strong homeotropic anchoring at one boundary and small shell size, ho…

Growth and characterization of AP-MOCVD iron doped titanium dioxide thin films

1999

Abstract Atmospheric pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition (AP-MOCVD) was used to prepare iron doped titanium dioxide thin films. Thin films, between 40 and 150 nm thick, were deposited on Si, SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 substrates using titanium tetra isopropoxide and ferrocene as metal organic precursors. TiO 2 iron doping was achieved in the range of 1–4 at.%. The film morphology and thickness, polycrystalline texture and doping content were studied using respectively scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The influence of growth temperature, deposition time, substrate type and dopant partial pressure were studied. Electr…

Current-Induced Skyrmion Generation through Morphological Thermal Transitions in Chiral Ferromagnetic Heterostructures.

2018

© 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim Magnetic skyrmions promise breakthroughs in future memory and computing devices due to their inherent stability and small size. Their creation and current driven motion have been recently observed at room temperature, but the key mechanisms of their formation are not yet well-understood. Here it is shown that in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures, pulsed currents can drive morphological transitions between labyrinth-like, stripe-like, and skyrmionic states. Using high-resolution X-ray microscopy, the spin texture evolution with temperature and magnetic field is imaged and it is demonstrated that with transient Joule heating, topologica…

Texture and Phase Recognition Analysis of beta-NaYF4 Nanocrystals

2014

Texture and phase recognition analysis (TPRA) based on electron nanodiffraction technique is used to characterize the geometry of up-conversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) synthesized by the common thermal-decomposition protocol in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of NH4F. Here, we confirmed experimentally that despite the apparently different shapes of samples (hexagons, rods, and cubes), all the nanocrystals are actually beta-phase hexagonal prisms. This is of relevance since many biological features of nanostructures, such as cellular internalization and cytotoxicity, are governed by their geometry. In addition, reproducibility in biological experiments is paramount.

Texture analysis and optical anisotropy measurements of leukocytes for early diagnostics of diabetes mellitus

2004

DNA damage had been suggested to contribute to the pathogenesis of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). In this work we present a method for detection and discrimination of such DNA changes by means of analysis of light microscope images of anisotropically stained leukocytes nuclei. Several features of the images have been evaluated, including integrated optical density, degree of polarisation, and textural features. A genetic algorithm, coupled with a neural classifier, has been used to find the best features for identification of the pathology. Reported results indicate the best set is able to achieve an 83% correct classification ratio.

Strain mapping near a triple junction in strained Ni-based alloy using EBSD and biaxial nanogauges

2011

A key element for analyzing the crack initiation in strained polycrystalline alloys is the local quantification of the surface strain distribution according to the grain texture. Using electron backscattered diffraction, the local microstructure was determined to both localize a triple junction and deduce the local Schmid factors. Kernel average misorientation (KAM) was also used to map the areas of defect concentration. The maximum principal strain and the in-plane shear strain were quantified using the biaxial nanogauge. Distortions of the array of nanodots used as spot markers were analyzed near the triple junction. The crystallographic orientation and the surface strain were then invest…
