Tuning Java to Run Interactive Multiagent Simulations over Jason

2010

Java-based simulation environments are currently used by many multiagent systems (MAS), since they mainly provide portability as well as an interesting reduction of the development cost. However, this kind of MAS are rarely considered when developing interactive applications with time response constraints. This paper analyses the performance provided by Jason, a well-known Java-based MAS platform, as a suitable framework for developing interactive multiagent simulations. We show how to tune both the heap size and the garbage collection of the Java Virtual Machine in order to achieve a good performance while executing a simple locomotion benchmark based on crowd simulations. Furthermore, the…

Fire risk sub-module assessment under solvency II. Calculating the highest risk exposure

2021

The European Directive 2009/138 of Solvency II requires adopting a new approach based on risk, applying a standard formula as a market proxy in which the risk profile of insurers is fundamental. This study focuses on the fire risk sub-module, framed within the man-made catastrophe risk module, for which the regulations require the calculation of the highest concentration of risks that make up the portfolio of an insurance company within a radius of 200 m. However, the regulations do not indicate a specific methodology. This study proposes a procedure consisting of calculating the cluster with the highest risk and identifying this on a map. The results can be applied immediately by any insur…

WORKING CAPITAL AS AN ENTERPRISE VALUE ASSESSMENT TOOL

2019

The valuation of an entity in off-exchange transactions involves the use of different techniques. Nevertheless, none of them guarantees the most accurate result. Therefore, it is very difficult to choose one evaluation method. Both investors, corporate managers, financial professionals, portfolio managers, and securities analysts should have a basic understanding of the process of evaluating companies. To that end, professionals recommend evaluating a company’s financial reports to detect its financial position and solvency. According to the methods of financial analysis, working capital is one of the solvency ratios, which describes the value of resources that remain after the company’s cu…

Controlled Self-Assembly of Electron Donor Nanotubes

2009

We employ a combination of urea-urea hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions to obtain soluble self-assembled nanotubes decorated with electron-donor TTF derivatives on the periphery. We have investigated the structure and stability of the nanotubes with a combination of experiments and high-level DFT calculations. We also demonstrate that the association process can be controlled by changes in the hydrogen-bonding ability of the solvent and electrochemically.

Study of 3D sound for an audio-visual interaction in enriched virtual environment

2011

Most of the applications integrating 3D sound in virtual environment are limited to acoustic simulation. The objective of this thesis is to study the added value of 3D sound in the interaction with virtual environment. We developed an audio stimulation technique called "Artificial Spatial Audio Sensation: (ASAS)" based on the creation of audio effects. This technique conveys the sensations of spatialized sound that allows accurate sound source localization in azimuth and in elevation. In order to improve the localization time we also developed a model that integrates Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) with the ASAS technique. For the simulation of the depth of spatial sound sources, we d…

Treatment with metformin is associated with a prolonged survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

2019

BACKGROUND Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most lethal cancers. Nutrition- and life style-associated risk factors are increasingly prevalent. Metformin, the mainstay of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)-treatment, reduces the risk of hepatocarcinogenesis. However, its influence on the prognosis of patients with HCC has not been investigated on a large scale, yet. METHODS Five thousand and ninety-three patients treated for HCC between 2000 and 2016 at three referral centres were included in this retrospective multicentre study. The aim of this study was to assess whether treatment with metformin for T2DM is associated with a prolonged overall survival (OS) in patients diagnosed wi…

Risk management optimization for sovereign debt restructuring

2015

Debt restructuring is one of the policy tools available for resolving sovereign debt crises and, while unorthodox, it is not uncommon. We propose a scenario analysis for debt sustainability and integrate it with scenario optimization for risk management in restructuring sovereign debt. The scenario dynamics of debt-to-GDP ratio are used to define a tail risk measure, termed "conditional Debt-at-Risk". A multi-period stochastic programming model minimizes the expected cost of debt financing subject to risk limits. It provides an operational model to handle significant aspects of debt restructuring: it collects all debt issues in a common framework, and can include contingent claims, multiple…

Cross-border capital flows and information spillovers across the equity and currency markets in emerging economies

2021

This paper presents a novel perspective on the interaction between equity and currency markets in emerging market economies (EMEs) by (i) examining the nonlinear effects of capital flows on return spillovers between the stock and currency markets in a sample of twelve EMEs via the causality-in-quantiles approach of Balcilar et al., (2016), and (ii) providing a comparative analysis of the influence of debt versus equity flows over the spillover patterns. We show that the causal effects of international debt and equity flows on return spillovers across the equity and FX markets are largely concentrated at lower quantiles, suggesting that the arrival of information via capital flows tends to e…

Comprehensive study of the heat resistance of dried Bacillus subtilis spores

2013

In response to starvation, species from the genre Bacillus are able to form metabolicallydormant spores which are very resistant to multiple forms of stress. They are found in quitehigh concentrations in some dried foods which, upon rehydration, may lead to food deterioration or food-borne diseases. Moreover, their destruction is rather difficult and mostof the techniques commonly used to treat dry foods result in a very low spore inactivation. The aim of this work is to better understand the role spore hydration in the inactivation ofdried Bacillus subtilis spores. A fundamental study was conducted using DifferentialScanning Calorimetry pans as reactors to perform a heat treatment in dried …
