Game-based learning supported by audience response tools: game proposals and preliminary assessment

2018

The so-called game-based learning strategies are based on introducing games in the classrooms to improve aspects such as student performance, concentration and effort. Currently, they provide a very useful resource to increase the motivation of university students, generating a better atmosphere among peers and between student and teacher, which in turn is generally translated into better academic results. However, the design of games that successfully achieve the desired teaching-learning objectives is not a trivial task. This work focuses on the design of games that allow the assessment of ICT-related university subjects. Specifically, three different games are proposed, all based on stud…

Inflow/outflow pressure boundary conditions for smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of incompressible flows

2017

Abstract Open Boundary treatment is a well-known issue in the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, mainly when the truly Incompressible (ISPH) approach is employed. In the paper a novel method is proposed to set pressure boundary conditions in the computational domain inlets and outlets, without requiring the velocity profile assignment. The new technique allows to treat in the same way inflow and outflow sections, effectively dealing with the release of new particles at inlets and the deactivation of the ones leaving the domain through the outlets. Several 3D numerical tests, both in the laminar and turbulent regimes, are carried out to validate the proposed numerical scheme consi…

New type of chimeric fusion product between theEWS andATF1 genes in clear cell sarcoma (malignant melanoma of soft parts)

1998

We report a new case of clear cell sarcoma (CCS) harboring the t(12;22)(q13;q12). Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis revealed the presence of a chimeric transcript between the EWS and ATF1 genes, both in primary and metastatic tissue. Sequencing studies disclosed an in-frame fusion between EWS gene codon 265 and ATF1 gene codon 110. This breakpoint has not been reported previously and indicates an important in vivo loss of EWS and ATF1 gene domains, which could be associated with the unusually aggressive behavior of this tumor. Food choices at lunch during the third year of life: Increase in energy intake but decrease in variety

2007

Aim: Modelling the evolution between the ages of 2 and 3 y of the energy intake and the variety of free food choices at lunch time in relation to children's and context variables. Methods: One-year follow-up from 2 to 3 y old. In a nursery canteen, food choices at lunch were recorded by trained assistants who monitored portion size. Energy intake and food variety were estimated. Three hundred and ninety-five children were studied, for 112 meals and over 10 mo on average. Mixed models of analysis of variance were used to take into account the longitudinal character of the data. Results: From 2 to 3 y, energy intake increased. Variety decreased during the first 7 mo and then remained constant…

Postural balance and self-reported functional ability in 75-year-old men and women: a cross-national comparative study.

1997

OBJECTIVE To study postural balance in relation to self-reported functional ability (mobility and ADL) and general physical activity in elderly men and women living in three different Nordic environments. PARTICIPANTS A random sample of 448 men and 556 women from among the 75-year-old residents in Glostrup, Denmark, and Goteborg, Sweden, and all the residents of relevant age (127 men and 261 women) in Jyvaskyla, Finland. MEASUREMENTS Assessment of postural balance with eyes open and closed using a piezoelectric force platform. A structured interview on self-reported functional ability and physical activity. An in-laboratory medical examination. RESULTS In spite of some differences in balanc…

Biomechanical analysis of anticipation of elite and inexperienced goalkeepers to distance shots in handball

2012

AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the anticipation time and kinematic factors in the movement ofgoalkeepers’ center of mass when making a long-distance throw in handball. The sample group was composed of 14goalkeepers and field players. A force platform was used to measure the force of the goalkeepers’ reaction movements, whilethe throwers’ movements were recorded with high-speed cameras. The expert goalkeepers began to move 193 ± 67 ms beforethe ball was released, with a 67% success rate of interception. The inexperienced goalkeepers began their movement 209 ±127 ms with a 24% success rate. The time taken by expert goalkeepers to begin a vertical movement of their CM, rel…

Potencialidades de Google Maps en la investigación social aplicada

2019

In recent years, Google has devoted resources to build a complete map of the world. They constantly scan the territory, collecting a large amount of data that provides updated and complete geographic information. This allows us to have an interoperable map that provides the end user with a search tool, not only of routes but also of shops, equipment and any type of geo-referenced information. In addition, Google Maps provides a series of Application Programming Interface (API), which provides a library of set of subroutines, functions and procedures (in object-oriented programming) that can be used by other software to automate the extraction of information of the Google platform.
