Cell of origin markers identify different prognostic subgroups of lung adenocarcinoma

2018

Strong prognostic markers able to stratify lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) patients are lacking. We evaluated whether a six-immunohistochemical markers panel (TTF1, SP-A, Napsin A, MUC5AC, CDX2 and CK5), defining the putative neoplastic “cell of origin,” allows to identify prognostic subgroups among lung ADC. We screened a large cohort of ADC specimens (2003–2013) from Torino Institutional Repository identifying: (i) marker positivity by immunohistochemistry, (ii) main morphological appearance by light microscopy, (iii) presence of “hotspot” mutations of candidate genes by Sequenom technology. To evaluate possible predictors of survival and time to recurrence, uni- and multivariable-adjusted comp…

Mevalonate pathway inhibitors affect anticancer drug-induced cell death and DNA damage response of human sarcoma cells

2011

Lovastatin (Lov), bisphosphonates (BP) and metformin (Met) are widely used drugs, having in common that they interfere with the mevalonate pathway (MP). The MP generates isoprene moieties required for the function of regulatory GTPases controlling cell proliferation and survival. Here, we addressed the question whether MP inhibitors interfere with the anti-tumor efficacy of anticancer drugs. We comparatively analyzed the effect of equitoxic doses of Lov, BP and Met on cell viability, cell cycle progression, apoptosis and DNA damage response (DDR) of human osteo- and fibrosarcoma cells exposed to doxorubicin or cisplatin. We found that Lov, BP and Met modulated the anticancer drug sensitivit…

Roles of EGFR and KRAS and their downstream signaling pathways in pancreatic cancer and pancreatic cancer stem cells

2015

Pancreatic cancer is currently the fourth most common cancer, is increasing in incidence and soon will be the second leading cause of cancer death in the USA. This is a deadly malignancy with an incidence that approximates the mortality with 44,000 new cases and 36,000 deaths each year. Surgery, although only modestly successful, is the only curative option. However, due the locally aggressive nature and early metastasis, surgery can be performed on less than 20% of patients. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is palliative, has significant toxicity and improves survival very little. Thus new treatment paradigms are needed desperately. Due to the extremely high frequency of KRAS gene mutations (>90%) d…

Muskelfunksjon blant unge toppidrettsutøvere i Sør-Norge : Finnes det en sammenheng mellom utvalgte fysiologiske faktorer og muskelstyrke, power og h…

2019

Masteroppgave idrettsvitenskap ME517 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Background: Muscle strengthand poweris a determining feature of performance in many different sports and thephysiologicalfactors that affect muscle functionare many. Previous studies have mostly concernedadult athletes, while researchfeaturing young elite athletes or differences between sports have been scarce. Purpose: The study’s purposeis to investigate possibleconnectionsbetween physiological factors such as resting metabolic rate, protein intake, and fat-free mass and muscle functionamong young elite athletes in southern Norway.Differences between sport-groupswere alsoinvestigated. Method: A total of 36young elite athlet…

Instability of relativistic sheared jets and distinction between FRI and FRII sources

2002

We investigate the shear-driven instability of nonmagnetic relativistic jets with the bulk velocity, V , dependent on the cylindric radius, r. It is shown that instability can arise for any dependence of the velocity (or the Lorentz factor that is the same) on r. The shear-driven instability can e ectively operate in the whole volume of a jet. The growth time can be shorter than that of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The considered instability leads to a turbulization of jets and can account for a distiction between the jets in the FRI and FRII sources. Urpin, V., Vadim.Urpin@uv.es

Wykorzystanie platformy MS Teams w nauczaniu przedmiotów humanistycznych

2021

The presented chapter describes experience of working with students on the MS Teams platform. There is described the outbreak of the epidemic in which all participants of the educational process found themselves as a complete novelty, which forced everyone to seek a way out of the impasse and find themselves in a different educational reality. Then, there is presented the specificity of particular classes conducted on the MS Teams platform, indicating the methods of work which were used, adjusting them to the capabilities, interests, level of language proficiency, and even the size of particular groups. In the next subchapter there are discussed the benefits and risks of online teaching, wh…

From NGOs to Banks: Does Institutional Transformation Alter the Business Model of Microfinance Institutions?

2017

© 2016 Elsevier Ltd In the microfinance industry an increasing number of providers are undergoing an institutional transformation from NGO to a shareholder-owned and typically regulated financial entity. Little is known about the extent to which this transformation affects the way microfinance institutions (MFIs) conduct their business. Our results obtained by applying an event study methodology to 66 transformed MFIs suggest that portfolio yield is driven down by 3.9 percentage points due to transformation, indicating that clients get more favorable interest rates. MFIs are able to significantly cut down their operational expenses, of which 1.1 percentage points can be attributed to transf…

Technology spillover and TFP growth: A spatial Durbin model

2016

Beginning with a model in which technological progress is reflected by product variety, we provide a structural approach to estimate technology spillovers allowing for spatial interdependencies. To this end, we first present a theoretical model of TFP growth by decomposing TFP into quality and variety components. We address the quality component by introducing a country׳s distance to the technological frontier. Quality is assumed to be a negative function of the technological gap of country i with respect to its own technological frontier. This technological threshold is defined as the geometric means of knowledge levels in all countries. We deal with the variety component by using R&D expe…

The Role of Risk and Information for International Capital Flows: New Evidence from the SDDS

2012

In this paper, we investigate whether better information about the macroeconomic environment of an economy has a positive impact on its capital inflows, namely portfolio and foreign direct investment (FDI). The purpose of our study is to explicitly quantify information asymmetries by compliance with the IMF's Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS). For FDI, we fi nd statistically signi cant and robust support for this hypothesis: SDDS subscription increased inflows by an economically relevant magnitude of about 60 percent. We also find evidence of aversion against political and macroeconomic risk as determinants of portfolio and FDI flows and use a non-parametric test for spatial correl…
