Sustainable tourist development in Italian holiday destinations

This paper argues that tourism, will become a major activity in a modern welfare state, which will have serious consequences for environmental sustainability. This issue calls for an assessment of the pros and cons of the ecological efficiency of tourism. We propose an overall efficiency indicator that comprises both a sustainable tourism index and an economic efficiency index. Based on a data set for Italian provinces and using Activity Analysis, a quantitative assessment of the relative position of Italian tourist destination areas is made from the perspective of sustainable tourism. Same work, lower grade? Student ethnicity and teachers’ subjective assessments

Previous research shows that ethnic minority students perform poorer in school when they are taught by ethnic majority teachers. Why this is the case was unclear. This paper focuses on one important potential explanation: I examine whether ethnic majority teachers grade minority and majority students differently for the same work. Using an experiment, I rule out the existence of such a direct grading bias. I do find indirect evidence for alternative explanations: teachers report lower expectations and unfavorable attitudes that both likely affect their behavior towards minority students, potentially inducing them to perform below their ability level. Many present markets for goods and services have highly volatile demand due to short life cycles and strong competition in saturated environments. Determination of capacity levels is difficult because capacities often need to be set long before demand realizes. In order to avoid capacity-demand mismatches, operations managers employ mix-flexible resources which allow them to shift excess demands to unused capacities. In equity offerings in which pre-emptive subscription rights are issued, there are two ways of acquiring the company's shares: either by buying them directly on the market, or by subscribing to the new shares using the subscription rights. This could lead to the existence of arbitrage opportunities. In addition, the announcement of these processes incorporates very relevant information to the market, which could generate abnormal returns for the shares. This paper analyses both hypotheses simultaneously on the same sample and concludes that there are indeed arbitrage opportunities and also abnormal returns can be detected. Ethical preferences for influencing superiors: A 41-society study

With a 41-society sample of 9990 managers and professionals, we used hierarchical linear modeling to investigate the impact of both macro-level and micro-level predictors on subordinate influence ethics. While we found that both macro-level and micro-level predictors contributed to the model definition, we also found global agreement for a subordinate influence ethics hierarchy. Thus our findings provide evidence that developing a global model of subordinate ethics is possible, and should be based upon multiple criteria and multilevel variables. Sampling properties of the Bayesian posterior mean with an application to WALS estimation

Many statistical and econometric learning methods rely on Bayesian ideas, often applied or reinterpreted in a frequentist setting. Two leading examples are shrinkage estimators and model averaging estimators, such as weighted-average least squares (WALS). In many instances, the accuracy of these learning methods in repeated samples is assessed using the variance of the posterior distribution of the parameters of interest given the data. This may be permissible when the sample size is large because, under the conditions of the Bernstein--von Mises theorem, the posterior variance agrees asymptotically with the frequentist variance. Implantación de recursos didácticos digitales en asignaturas de Organización de Empresas

El objetivo de este artículo es presentar el protocolo de implantación de diversas herramientas didácticas, así como el nivel de satisfacción de los estudiantes que las utilizan. Los resultados muestran, primero, que no es posible crear un único protocolo aplicable a todos los recursos, debido a las diferencias en los objetivos didácticos existentes. Segundo, la valoración que los estudiantes hacen de la utilización de los recursos es muy positiva, aunque existen algunas diferencias entre las distintas herramientas. Estos resultados permiten mejorar los recursos y adecuarlos al perfil de los estudiantes para que éstos puedan sacar el mayor provecho posible.
