Velocity of the fourth sound in liquid helium II via extended thermodynamics

2003

This work continues a study begun in previous works, where, using Extended Thermodynamics, a monofluid model of liquid helium II is formulated. The wave propagation in bulk liquid helium II is studied in the hypothesis that the thermal dilatation is not zero. The propagation of fourth sound, studied previously neglecting both the thermal dilatation and finite volume of the powder, is studied without these simplified hypotheses: a scattering correction n is introduced to take into account the porosity. The model is more general than the standard two-fluid model because it allows that a small amount of entropy is associated with helium when it flows through a very thin capillary or a porous m…

Homogeneous freezing of single sulfuric and nitric acid solution drops levitated in an acoustic trap

2009

Abstract The freezing temperatures of single supercooled drops of binary and ternary sulfuric and nitric acid solutions were measured while varying the acid concentration. An acoustic levitator was used which allows to freely suspend single solution drops in air without electrical charges thereby avoiding any electrical influences which may affect the freezing process. The drops of typically 500 µm in radius were monitored by a video camera during cooling cycles down to − 85 °C to simulate the upper tropospheric and stratospheric temperature range. The present data confirm that liquid solution droplets can be supercooled far below the equilibrium melting point by approximately 35 °C. They f…

Flexibility in the Graphene Sheet: The Influence on Gas Adsorption from Molecular Dynamics Studies

2019

Despite being considered completely rigid in most studies, graphene is really flexible leading to out-of-plane movements. In this work, the influence of such flexibility on the adsorption of methane and nitrogen on graphene is studied using molecular dynamics. Indeed, we have used intramolecular force fields for graphene with in-plane and out-of-plane components that allow for describing the movements and deformations of the graphene sheets and providing a more realistic description of the adsorbent. In addition, intermolecular force fields validated at the CCSD(T) level are used. We show that considering the movement of graphene in the adsorption study significantly improves the performanc…

Floquet states in dissipative open quantum systems

2019

Abstract We theoretically investigate basic properties of nonequilibrium steady states of periodically-driven open quantum systems based on the full solution of the Maxwell–Bloch equation. In a resonant driving condition, we find that the transverse relaxation, also known as decoherence, significantly destructs the formation of Floquet states while the longitudinal relaxation does not directly affect it. Furthermore, by evaluating the quasienergy spectrum of the nonequilibrium steady states, we demonstrate that Rabi splitting can be observed as long as the decoherence time is as short as one third of the Rabi-cycle. Moreover, we find that Floquet states can be formed even under significant …

Rotor whirl damping by dry friction suspension systems

2008

An efficient and automatic attenuation technique for the whirling motion of rotating machinery can be achieved by supporting the journal boxes elastically and providing them with suitable rubbing surfaces subject to dry friction normal to the shaft axis. The critical flexural speeds are easily cut off and the whirl amplitude is minimized throughout the frequency range. Confining the usual operative angular speed of the rotor in the range of adhesive contact between the dry friction surfaces, there is no significant increase of power dissipation or heat production as a whole due to this type of suspension system, whose task is just to suppress the resonant peaks when passing the critical spe…

Extension of the dynamic range of flame atomic absorption spectrometry using flow injection analysis with variable-volume dilution chambers

1996

Abstract A simple and inexpensive procedure is proposed for the extension of the dynamic range of flame atomic absorption spectrometry measurements using on-line dilution. The proposed methodology is based on the use of a manifold with two coupled dilution chambers and a zone injection system. The samples are prediluted in a closed system which includes a variable-volume mixing chamber (10–120 ml) and two injection valves. The samples are injected through one of these valves, and the other is employed to take 100 μl of prediluted samples which are then passed through a new dilution chamber (volume 1–10 ml) and aspirated by the nebulizer of the instrument. A third injection valve mounted in …

Aging and the fluctuation dissipation ratio in a Lennard-Jones fluid

1999

We discuss numerically the relaxation dynamics of a simple structural glass which has been quenched below its (computer) glass transition temperature. We demonstrate that time correlation functions show strong aging effects and compute the fluctuation dissipation ratio of this non-equilibrium system.

Thermophoretic separation of ultrafine particles in ferrofluids in thermal diffusion column under the effect of an MHD convection

2000

The aim of the paper is to evaluate the Soret coeAcient ST of colloidal particles in ferrofluids from measurements of an unsteady particle separation in a flat thermodiAusion column. The column theory is modified taking into account MHD eAects of thermal convection aAected by a concentration buoyancy force. It is shown that the Hartmann eAect, not only in hydrocarbon based colloids but also in ionic magnetic fluids of relatively high electric conductivity, does not influence significantly the particle separation dynamics. From measurements, positive values of ST of surfacted particles in tetradecane based colloids are calculated. An anisotropy of the Soret eAect in the presence of a uniform…

Matched asymptotic solution for the solute boundary layer in a converging axisymmetric stagnation point flow

2007

Abstract A novel boundary-layer solution is obtained by the method of matched asymptotic expansions for the solute distribution at a solidification front represented by a disk of finite radius R 0 immersed in an axisymmetric converging stagnation point flow. The detailed analysis reveals a complex internal structure of the boundary layer consisting of eight subregions. The development of the boundary layer starts from the rim region where the concentration, according to the obtained similarity solution, varies with the radius r along the solidification front as ∼ln 1/3 ( R 0 / r ). At intermediate radii, where the corresponding concentration is found to vary as ∼ln( R 0 / r ), the boundary …

Low-Prandtl Number Natural Convection in Volumetrically Heated Rectangular Enclosures - III. Shallow Cavity, AR=0.25

2001

Abstract Natural convection in a volumetrically heated rectangular enclosure filled with a low-Prandtl number (Pr=0.0321) fluid was studied by direct numerical two-dimensional simulation. The enclosure had isothermal side walls and adiabatic top/bottom walls. The aspect ratio was 4 and the Grashof number Gr, based on conductive maximum temperature and cavity width, ranged from 3.79 × 104 to 1.26 × 109. According to the value of Gr, different flow regimes were obtained: steady-state, periodic, and chaotic. The first instability of the steady-state solution occurred at Gr≈3×105; the resulting time-periodic flow field consisted of a central rising plume and of convection rolls, periodically ge…
