Osmocellular Fas and Fas ligand interactions mediate thyrocyte destruction in Hashimoto's thyroiditis
1997
(Dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine)(glycinato)copper(II) perchlorate: a novel DNA-intercalator with anti-proliferative activity against thyroid cancer…
2012
Abstract A novel copper(II) heteroleptic complex of dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine (dppz) and glycinato (gly) as chelating ancillary ligand, [Cu(dppz)(gly)]ClO 4 ( 1 ), was synthesized and characterized. X-ray crystallography revealed that the coordination geometry of the cationic [Cu(dppz)(gly)] + unit is hexacoordinated and shows a distorted octahedral coordination geometry in the solid state, with the N,N and N,O chelating atoms of dppz and glycinato, respectively, in the square plane and in which the planar units are connected in a monodimensional polymeric array by the apical copper coordination of the second carboxylic oxygen atom. Biological assays showed that 1 exhibits a remarkab…
Complicanze in chirurgia tiroidea: ipoparatiroidismo sintomatico post-operatorio.Incidenza, note di tecnica chirurgica, prevenzione e trattamento.
2006
Introduction: Total thyroidectomy has a definite role in the management of malignant and benign thyroid disorders, with minimal complications and rare postoperative mortality. Even though thyroid surgery is quite safe, mechanical damage, devascularization or inadvertent removal of the parathyroid glands are possible. The aim of this study is to report report the personal surgical experience and to define some of the pathologic and clinical characteristics of unintentional parathyroidectomy and post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia Materials and methods: A retrospective-observational study was carried on 313 thyroidectomies from January 2000 to January 2004 (60 males and 253 females), mean age 41 …
Intact parathyroid hormone value on the first postoperative day following total thyroidectomy as a predictor of permanent hypoparathyroidism: a retro…
2022
Introduction: Hypoparathyroidism represents a common complication following total thyroidectomy. To date, there is still no reliable and immediate postoperative parameter to establish which patients with postsurgical hypoparathyroidism will develop permanent hypoparathyroidism. The main purpose of the present study was to assess whether the intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) value on the first postoperative day is a good predictor of permanent hypoparathyroidism. Material and methods: Patients undergoing thyroidectomy in our unit between March 2018 and January 2020 were analysed. According to the iPTH value on the first postoperative day and on the basis of the detection threshold of the iPT…
The Congenital Hypothyroidism Screening Programme in a Sigle Italian Centre: A 5-Years Retrospective Study
2018
Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) occurs in approximately 1:2,000-1:3,000 newborns in Italy. Lowering of the TSH cut-off was the most important factor contributing to the increase of CH incidence in Italy. The aim of this study is the determination of the prevalence of CH in northwest Sicily, evaluated by the single screening centre of the Children Hospital “G. Di Cristina”, ARNAS, Palermo. From January 2013 to December 2017, 79.699 newborns were screened testing TSH from blood spots. The neonates with TSH≥6mU/L were recalled measuring serum fT4, fT3, TSH, anti- TG and anti-TG antibodies, and thyroid echography. To evaluate the effect in lowering the TSH cut-off, we compared the cases of confi…
Biomineralisations in crustaceans: storage strategies
2004
Abstract Crustaceans are a remarkable group of animals because of their ability to elaborate cyclically two kinds of calcified biomineralisations: an unstretchable exoskeleton (or cuticle) and also, for many species, depending of the way of life of the considered animal, transitory calcium deposits. They are in consequence subjected to a cyclic life and notably, to a periodical balance between two sources of calcium, exogenous and/or endogenous. The storage structures, essentially composed of calcium carbonate precipitated within a proteinaceous organic matrix, are very diversified. The calcium carbonate of the cuticle of most of the species is under a crystalline state and/or an amorphous …
Induction of DNA single-strand breaks by 131I and 99mTc in human mononuclear blood cells in vitro and extrapolation to the in vivo situation.
2000
The radionuclides (131)I and (99m)Tc are frequently used for therapy of benign and malignant thyroid disease ((131)I) and for diagnosis of thyroid and other diseases ((99m)Tc). However, the levels of DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) induced in cells of patients after administration of (131)I and (99m)Tc are not known. In this study, we measured the number of SSBs per cell induced by (131)I and (99m)Tc in vitro, extrapolated the results to the clinical situation, and assessed their biological relevance by comparing levels of SSBs induced after therapeutic administration of (131)I and (99m)Tc to those induced by endogenous processes or by occupational exposure to genotoxic substances. A linear…
Overdiagnosis and overimaging: an ethical issue for radiological protection
2019
Aims and objectives: This study aimed to analyse the key factors that influence the overimaging using X-ray such as self-referral, defensive medicine and duplicate imaging studies and to emphasize the ethical problem that derives from it. Materials and methods: In this study, we focused on the more frequent sources of overdiagnosis such as the total-body CT, proposed in the form of screening in both public and private sector, the choice of the most sensitive test for each pathology such as pulmonary embolism, ultrasound investigations mostly of the thyroid and of the prostate and MR examinations, especially of the musculoskeletal system. Results: The direct follow of overdiagnosis and overi…
Parenting Stress Profile and Children Behaviour in Patients with Congenital Hypothyroidism
2015
Background: Hypothyroidism has been associated with cognitive and motor impairments, the degree to which mild hypothyroidism, or subclinical hypothyroidism impacts mood and cognitive functions and whether these symptoms respond to treatment, remains controversial. Furthermore, hypothyroidism is associated with an increased susceptibility to depression and reductions in health-related quality of life. Objective and hypotheses: Recent longitudinal studies stressed that the follow-up of children with treated congenital hypothyroidism (CHT) should not be limited to the cognitive domain. This study attempted to evaluate the emotional–behavioural profiles in children with CHT and the parenting st…
Determination of thyreostatics in animal feed by micellar electrokinetic chromatography
1999
The determination of the thyreostatics 2-thiouracil, its derivatives (4-methyl-2-thiouracil, 4-propyl-2-thiouracil and 4-phenyl-2-thiouracil) and methimazole in manufactured dried animal feed by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) is described. A 99 +/- 5% extraction yield at the 20 micrograms g-1 level (n = 8) was achieved by shaking the milled fodder with methanol-1 M NaOH (80 + 20). Aliquots of the supernatant were injected in a 75 microns x 33.5 cm uncoated silica capillary using pressure; separation was performed at 23 degrees C with 15 kV (positive polarity) in a background electrolyte (BGE) containing 40 mM sodium dihydrogenphosphate, 50 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate and 15 mM …
