A 3D‑scaffold of PLLA induces the morphological differentiation and migration of primary astrocytes and promotes the production of extracellular vesi…

2019

The present study analyzed the ability of primary rat astrocytes to colonize a porous scaffold, mimicking the reticular structure of the brain parenchyma extracellular matrix, as well as their ability to grow, survive and differentiate on the scaffold. Scaffolds were prepared using poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) via thermally-induced phase separation. Firstly, the present study studied the effects of scaffold morphology on the growth of astrocytes, evaluating their capability to colonize. Specifically, two different morphologies were tested, which were obtained by changing the polymer concentration in the starting solution. The structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and a…

Real-time simulation of tissue deformation for the nasal endoscopy simulator (NES).

1999

Endonasal sinus surgery requires a great amount of training before it can be adequately performed. The complicated anatomy involved, the proximity of relevant structures, and the variability of the anatomy due to inborn or iatrogenic variations make several complications possible. Today, cadaver dissections are the "gold standard" for surgical training. To overcome the drawbacks of traditional training methods, the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics is currently developing a highly interactive medical simulation system for nasal endoscopy and endonasal sinus surgery, in cooperation with the Mainz University Hospital. For the simulation of a rhinoscopic procedure, not only are the re…

PLLA scaffolds with controlled architecture as potential microenvironment for in vitro tumor model

2019

Abstract The "microenvironment" where a tumor develops plays a fundamental role in determining its progression, the onset of metastasis and, eventually, its resistance to therapies. Tumor cells can be considered more or less invasive depending both on the nature of the cells and on the site where they are located. Commonly adopted laboratory culture protocols for the investigation of tumor cells take usually place on standard two-dimensional supports. However, such cultures do not allow for reproduction of the biophysical properties of the tumor’s microenvironment, thus causing the cells to lose most of their relevant characteristics. In this work MDA-MB 231 breast cancer cells were cultiva…

Uncertainty quantification on a spatial Markov-chain model for the progression of skin cancer

2019

AbstractA spatial Markov-chain model is formulated for the progression of skin cancer. The model is based on the division of the computational domain into nodal points, that can be in a binary state: either in ‘cancer state’ or in ‘non-cancer state’. The model assigns probabilities for the non-reversible transition from ‘non-cancer’ state to the ‘cancer state’ that depend on the states of the neighbouring nodes. The likelihood of transition further depends on the life burden intensity of the UV-rays that the skin is exposed to. The probabilistic nature of the process and the uncertainty in the input data is assessed by the use of Monte Carlo simulations. A good fit between experiments on mi…

9-cis-Retinoic acid enhances fatty acid-induced expression of the liver fatty acid-binding protein gene

1997

The role of retinoic acids (RA) on liver fatty acid- binding protein (L-FABP) expression was investigated in the well differentiated FAO rat hepatoma cell line. 9-cis-Retinoic acid (9-ci's-RA) specifically enhanced L-FABP mRNA levels in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The higher induction was found 6 h after addition of 10 -6 M 9-CK-RA in the medium. RA also enhanced further both L-FABP mRNA levels and cytosolic L-FABP protein content induced by oleic acid. The retinoid X receptor (RXR) and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR), which are known to be activated, respectively, by 9-c/s-RA and long chain fatty acid (LCFA), co-operated to bind specifically the peroxisome prol…

Effects of elastic-based exercise interventions on oxidative stress, bone health, body composition, neuromuscular strength and physical function in o…

2021

Muc1 bioactivation contributes to lung fibrosis

2019

Morphometric and histopathological analysis of articular cartilage regeneration on tissue engineered scaffolds

2014

Pharmacological activation of CB2 receptors counteracts the deleterious effect of ethanol on cell proliferation in the main neurogenic zones of the a…

2015

Chronic alcohol exposure reduces endocannabinoid activity and disrupts adult neurogenesis in rodents, which results in structural and functional alterations. Cannabinoid receptor agonists promote adult neural progenitor cell (NPC) proliferation. We evaluated the protective effects of the selective CB1 receptor agonist ACEA, the selective CB2 receptor agonist JWH133 and the fatty-acid amide-hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor URB597, which enhances endocannabinoid receptor activity, on NPC proliferation in rats with forced consumption of ethanol (10%) or sucrose liquid diets for 2 weeks. We performed immunohistochemical and stereological analyses of cells expressing the mitotic phosphorylation of his…
