This article analyses two literary representations - by Daniel Defoe and Sir Walter Scott - of the career of an early-18th century Orkney pirate in order to confront the contemporary view of John Gow as an unprincipled cutthroat with later literary images of a Romantic corsair. It therefore examines evolving literary approaches in the period to socially transgressive behaviour.

Application of the Information Bottleneck method to discover user profiles in a Web store

The paper deals with the problem of discovering groups of Web users with similar behavioral patterns on an e-commerce site. We introduce a novel approach to the unsupervised classification of user sessions, based on session attributes related to the user click-stream behavior, to gain insight into characteristics of various user profiles. The approach uses the agglomerative Information Bottleneck (IB) algorithm. Based on log data for a real online store, efficiency of the approach in terms of its ability to differentiate between buying and non-buying sessions was validated, indicating some possible practical applications of the our method. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of th e most common effects of aging in men. Epidemiologists estimate that about one quarter of all men over 50 years of age suffer from BPH-derived voiding symptoms. Future demographic developments, with higher relative shares of older people, will increase the socioeconomic impact of this disease. Polder et al. (1994) calculated for the Netherlands that the treatment costs of BPH will double by 2035. Office visits for BPH related symptoms increased in the USA from 1.4 million in 1990 to 6 million in 1995, reflecting the increased public awareness of the problem and the increased desire for treatment (Kaplan et al. 1996).

Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää kohdekielisessä maassa tapahtuvan opiskelijavaihdon vaikutuksia ruotsin ja saksan opiskelijoiden ääntämiseen, eli muuttuuko ääntäminen ja millaisia mahdolliset muutokset ovat. Tutkimukseen osallistui neljä ruotsin ja neljä saksan opiskelijaa, jotka olivat opiskelijavaihdossa yhden lukukauden ajan Ruotsissa tai Saksassa. Tutkimusmateriaali koostuu luetusta puheesta, joka kerättiin ennen ja jälkeen opiskelijavaihdon.
