When Aristotle argues at the 'Metaphysics' Z.17, 1041b11–33 that a whole, which is not a heap, contains ‘something else’, i.e. the form, besides the elements, it is not clear whether or not the form is a proper part of the whole. I defend the claim that the form is not a proper part within the context of the relevant passage, since the whole is divided into elements, not into elements and the form. Different divisions determine different senses of ‘part’, and thus the form is not a part in the same sense as the elements are parts. A new mixed-mode fracture criterion for large-scale lattice models

Abstract. Reasonable fracture criteria are crucial for the modeling of dynamic failure in computational lattice models. Successful criteria exist for experiments on the micro- and on the mesoscale, which are based on the stress that a bond experiences. In this paper, we test the applicability of these failure criteria to large-scale models, where gravity plays an important role in addition to the externally applied deformation. Brittle structures, resulting from these criteria, do not resemble the outcome predicted by fracture mechanics and by geological observations. Testing audiovisual comprehension tasks with questions embedded in videos as subtitles: a pilot multimethod study

<p>Listening, watching, reading and writing simultaneously in a foreign language is very complex. This paper is part of wider research which explores the use of audiovisual comprehension questions imprinted in the video image in the form of subtitles and synchronized with the relevant fragments for the purpose of language learning and testing. Compared to viewings where the comprehension activity is available only on paper, this innovative methodology may provide some benefits. Overwintering Site Fidelity in the European Pond Turtle (Emys orbicularis) in Western Poland

The location of overwintering sites of six male and six female European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis) were studied using radiotelemetry in Western Poland, over a period of four consecutive seasons. Most of the studied individuals overwintered in the same area during the research; most distances between two consecutive overwintering sites were 0–25 m. However, changes related to the overwintering area were observed, and in such cases the distance between overwintering sites on two consecutive seasons could exceed 2 km. These results can support an efficient conservation strategy of the turtle population.

Objetivos: Analizar la utilización de una u otra pierna como pierna de ataque predominante en atletas de 400 m vallas de alto nivel. Método: El estudio es descriptivo de corte transversal. Se estudiaron todas las carreras de 400 m vallas de los 72 participantes (34 hombres y 38 mujeres) en los XIII Campeonatos del Mundo de Atletismo Daegu 2011, mediante la grabación en video desde la tribuna principal del Daegu Stadium de las 18 carreras de 400 m vallas disputadas, y el posterior análisis mediante la aplicación informática Kinovea 0.8.4. The Power of Leadership Storytelling : Case of Adolf Hitler

We consider the construction of leadership influence involving manipulation and from narrative standpoint. We use the career of Adolf Hitler as an empirical example - as a case - illustrating the huge, and potentially destructive, power of story-telling. Hitler is used as an illustrative case for how storytelling is involved in constructing great leadership influence – and with a view to making sense of such a leader’s story. We have applied both conceptual and narrative analysis in our empirical case. In terms of the narrative analysis, we follow Polkinghorne’s definition on narrative inquiry.
