Recent research in the Iron age settlement on the hill of Profitis Ilias (Gortyn) revealed part of a building belonging to the latest phase of the village (VIII-VII cent. B.C.), and perhaps intended to some civic function. Its building process involved the demolition of a part of a thick wall dated in the Protogeometric age, possibly to be identified with the defense wall of the former settlement. The stratigraphy in the building area showed significant evidence for the site occupation after the abandonment of the village.

Impact of crop species on bacterial community structure during anaerobic co-digestion of crops and cow manure

The bacterial communities in three continuously stirred tank reactors co-digesting cow manure with grass silage, oat straw, and sugar beet tops, respectively, were investigated by 16S rRNA gene-based fingerprints and clone libraries. The analyses revealed both clearly distinct and similar phylotypes in the bacterial communities between the reactors. The major groups represented in the three reactors were Clostridia, unclassified Bacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Phylotypes affiliated with Bacilli or Deltaproteobacteria were unique to the sugar beet and straw reactor, respectively. Structure of the Cryptosporidium parvum microneme: a metabolically and osmotically labile apicomplexan organelle.

From an EM study of thin sections, the rod-like microneme organelles within conventionally glutaraldehyde fixed Cryptosporidium parvum sporozoites have been shown to undergo a shape change to a more spherical structure when the sporozoites age in vitro for a period of approximately 12 to 24 h. This correlates with the shape change of intact sporozoites, from motile hence viable thin banana-shaped cells to swollen pear-shaped cells, shown by differential interference contrast light microscopy of unstained unfixed and glutaraldehyde-fixed samples, as well as by thin section EM of fixed sporozoites. Ultrastructure, fractionation and biochemical analysis of Cryptosporidium parvum sporozoites.

Abstract Sporozoites of the apicomplexan parasite Cryptosporidium parvum were subjected to cell disruption and subcellular fractionation using a sucrose density step gradient. With this procedure, highly enriched preparations of the parasite membrane, the micronemes, dense granules and amylopectin granules were produced. No separate fraction containing rhoptries was obtained, however this organelle was found in defined fractions of the gradient, still associated with the apical tip of the sporozoites. The natural dipeptide L-carnosine has been shown to have potential protective and therapeutic significance in many diseases. Atmosphere-Induced Effect in Microhardness, Dislocation Mobility and Plasticity of C60and Graphite Crystals

Abstract Formation of hard, brittle and toluene-insoluble near-surface layer (∼0.3 μm) of C60 crystals under atmospheric exposure was observed. Similar atmosphere-induced effect was found for graphite crystals and might also be expected for other molecular solids. Data on ageing kinetics of C60 and graphite crystals are presented. Variation of hardness with indentation depth can be described by the microhardness model for bilayer medium with different mechanical properties. Specific feature of C60 and graphite crystals is that no size effect appears in the intrinsic microhardness and dislocation mobility characteristics in the indentation depth range of 0.6–4μm.

Comparing colonial differences: Baltic literary cultures as agencies of Europe’s internal others

ABSTRACTThe article discusses the Baltic colonial experience in historical and comparative perspective. It sketches the ways in which Baltic societies are best linked to theoretical discussions on postcolonial issues, and whether they might be looked upon in a more global context. The main question posed by the article is in what ways Baltic identity has been determined by processes of foreign settlement, occupation and colonization of the territory of each respective country and whether we can see Baltic societies as potential agencies of Europe’s internal others.

Epistemic governance in local policy debates : The case of entitlement to early childhood education and care in Finland

In Finland, children below school age have enjoyed the right to attend subsidised full-time early childhood education and care (ECEC). However, the attendance rate in Finland is low in comparison to other Nordic countries. Furthermore, the entitlement was restricted to 20 h per week in 2016 unless the child’s parents work or study full-time or unless it is believed that the child will benefit from full-time ECEC. The debates concerning restrictions in ECEC entitlement in three municipal councils serve as the data for this study.
