Papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx.

2003

A case of papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx is reported. The lesion was located in the base of the tongue and grossly presented a characteristic finger-like pattern of growth. The clinicopathological profile of the neoplasm is presented and the differential diagnosis with other exophytic squamous cell carcinomas is discussed.

Oral health in a group of patients with Rett syndrome in the regions of Valencia and Murcia (Spain): A case-control study

2014

Objectives: Rett syndrome (RS) is a rare disease with oral manifestations that have not been described in detail or in a standardized manner in the literature. The present study describes the oral health of the population with RS in two Spanish regions, following the protocol of the World Health Organization for conducting common oral health surveys. Study Design: A prospective, observational case-control study was carried out, involving a group of patients with RS (n1=41) and a mean age of 13.37±3.19 years, and an age- and gender-matched control group without RS (n0=82). The data referred to oral health and habits were recorded by means of a questionnaire and oral examination was used to d…

Oral status and Candida colonization in patients with Sjogren s Syndrome

2009

Objective: To determine the oral status, salivary flow rate, Candida carriage in saliva, and prevalence of Candida albicans colonization in several areas of the mouth in patients with primary and secondary Sjögren?s syndrome as opposed to those of healthy subjects. Study design: Thirty-seven patients with Sjögren?s syndrome (SS), [14 patients with primary SS (SS-1) and 23 patients with secondary SS (SS-2)], along with 37 healthy controls were examined in regard to number of teeth, pro-bing pocket depth (PPD), approximal plaque index (API), bleeding on probing (BOP), presence of prosthetic appliances and smoking habits. Salivary flow rate (SFR), Candida carriage in saliva, presence of Candid…

Semaglutide reduces fat accumulation in the tongue: A randomized single-blind, pilot study

2021

Abstract Aim We evaluated the effect of the latest GLP-1 RA semaglutide on tongue fat storage in obese women. Design. We conducted a randomized single-blind, pilot study. Methods Twenty-five obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (33.7 ± 5.3 years, body mass index (BMI) 36.1 ± 3.9 kg/m2, mean ± SD) were randomized to semaglutide 1.0 mg or placebo for 16 weeks. We quantified tongue volume and its fat tissue and fat proportion by magnetic resonance imaging. Results Tongue fat tissue and fat proportion significantly reduced after semaglutide vs placebo (-1.94 ± 5.51 vs. + 3.12 ± 4.87 cm3, p = 0.022, and −0.02 ± 0.07 vs. 0.04 ± 0.06, p = 0.010, respectively). Corticobulbar tract involvement in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A transcranial magnetic stimulation study

1998

We investigated corticobulbar tract function by recording from the tongue and orofacial muscles and using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in 30 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in order to improve the diagnostic yield in the detection of subclinical upper motor neuron (UMN) dysfunction. A UMN lesion was assumed when the peripheral conduction time and amplitude of the M-wave were within normal range and either the response to cortical stimulation was absent, or the central conduction time was delayed (> mean + 2.5 SD). Only two patients showed clinical evidence of UMN involvement in the cranial nerves, while TMS demonstrated corticobulbar tract dysfunction in the oro…

Subjective states associated with retrieval failures in Parkinson's disease.

2013

Abstract Instances in which we cannot retrieve information immediately but know that the information might be retrieved later are subjective states that accompany retrieval failure. These are expressed in feeling-of-knowing (FOK) and Tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) experiences. In Experiment 1, participants with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and older adult controls were given general questions and asked to report when they experienced a TOT state and to give related information about the missing word. The PD group experienced similar levels of TOTs but provided less correct peripheral information related to the target when in a TOT state. In Experiment 2, participants were given a Semantic (general kno…

Determination of Bisulfites in Wines with an Electronic Tongue Based on Pulse Voltammetry

2009

Electronic tongues were developed some ten years ago. These systems consist of an array of nonspecific sensors and a signal processing unit. The sensor signals are processed by pattern recognition methods which makes possible the extraction of specific properties from the sample. Depending on the calibration, attributes such as quality or taste can be determined. These systems also detect changes in the sample that they are not calibrated for which makes possible the detection of anomalous occurrences. Such sensor systems are suitable for process control and surveillance. Important factors are the sensitivity and stability, specifically the sensor's ability to respond to small changes and t…

Stimulated and unstimulated saliva samples have significantly different bacterial profiles

2018

Epidemiological studies use saliva on a regular basis as a non-invasive and easy-to-take sample, which is assumed to be a microbial representative of the oral cavity ecosystem. However, comparative studies between different kinds of saliva samples normally used in microbial studies are scarce. The aim of the current study was to compare oral microbiota composition between two different saliva samples collected simultaneously: non-stimulated saliva with paper points and stimulated saliva collected after chewing paraffin gum. DNA was extracted from saliva samples of ten individuals, then analyzed by 16S rRNA pyrosequencing to describe bacterial diversity. The results demonstrate significant d…

A bibliometric analysis of scientific production in the field of lingual orthodontics

2019

Abstract Background Due to the lack of bibliometric studies in the field of lingual orthodontics in dentistry, the aim of this study was to assess the evolution and current status of activity in this field during the period 1978–2017. Methods A bibliometric analysis of the scientific articles indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded of the Web of Science and in the Scopus® database was performed using the truncated terms “ling* apppli*” or “ling* orthod*” or “ling* bracket*”. The types of texts included for analysis were limited to “articles” and “reviews”. The following information was extracted from each article identified: title, authors’ name(s), institutional affiliation(s), coun…
