The Role of Physicians' Digital Tools in Pharmacological Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

2022

Background and Objectives: The constantly increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the advent of new treatment options have made management of T2DM patients more demanding. We aimed to (a) estimate the familiarity of general practitioners with novel T2DM treatment options, (b) determine whether a digital tool can aid in their treatment decisions and (c) demonstrate that an evidence-based digital clinical support tool can be made using an existing digital platform. Materials and methods: This proof-of-concept study consisted of two parts: We first conducted a simple online survey among general practitioners of three European countries to estimate their familiarity with no…

The Neural Bases of Event Monitoring across Domains: a Simultaneous ERP-fMRI Study.

2017

The ability to check and evaluate the environment over time with the aim to detect the occurrence of target stimuli is supported by sustained/tonic as well as transient/phasic control processes, which overall might be referred to as event monitoring. The neural underpinning of sustained attentional control processes involves a fronto-parietal network. However, it has not been well-defined yet whether this cortical circuit acts irrespective of the specific material to be monitored and whether this mediates sustained as well as transient monitoring processes. In the current study, the functional activity of brain during an event monitoring task was investigated and compared between two cognit…

Negotiations with a risk assessment tool: Standardized decision-making in the United States and the deprofessionalization thesis

2017

AbstractThis article focuses on the challenges of decision-making in child protection. Comparative studies show that standardized risk assessment tools predict future maltreatment more accurately than interpretative assessment. Despite a long tradition of research on statistical decision-making, few studies deal with how such instruments are used and integrated into professional decision-making practice, and – from a transnational perspective – how specific national regulations influence such instruments and decision-making at street level. The article discusses concerns about the fact that such classification systems might have a negative impact on professional discretion. Based on a mater…

The metaphysics behind pharmacotherapy: treating depression with conventional and psychedelic drugs

2018

This paper aims to explore and compare the metaphysical entailments of the conventional psychopharmacological approach in the treatment of depression to those of a psychedelic approach. We will examine the thesis by which knowledge of how drugs act upon us shapes our self-image and our understanding of psychopathology––and defend that this process can only take place in a supportive environment. It is commonly claimed that the nature of depression was shaped after the therapeutic success of antidepressants; nevertheless, psychedelic drugs were at least as successful as antidepressants, and they didn’t end up having the same power to influence our views. It was possible for first and second-…

Ante oculos. Elementi di cultura visuale nell'eloquenza ciceroniana

2021

Within the vast area of research relating to visual strategies as a rhetorical means par excellence, the paper deals with Cicero’s way of using the term ante oculos and other related expressions in the orations. Due to the frequent and seemingly deliberate use of these expressive means, we can assume that there was a precise communication strategy aimed at exploiting the potential of rhetoric to connect, in an effective and productive way, image and speech, visual strategies and the evocative power of words.

Multi-directional vs. mono-directional multi-step strategies for single point incremental forming of non-axisymmetric components

2020

Abstract Multi Stage approach is used in Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) to overcome one of the main forming limitations, namely the maximum wall angle, characterizing the single stage process. In this paper, different multi-path strategies for the production of parts with flat edges are considered in order to evaluate the best solution in terms of feasibility and geometrical accuracy of the final part: A) mono-directional incremental draw angle; B) mono-directional incremental draw angle with increasing part side; C) Multi-directional approach with non-horizontal path planes. Strain evaluation by means of CGA (Circular Grid Analysis) and defect analysis have been carried out in ord…

On the effectiveness of Finite Element simulation of orthogonal cutting with particular reference to temperature prediction

2007

Abstract Finite Element simulation of orthogonal cutting is nowadays assuming a large relevance; in fact a very large number of papers may be found out in technical literature on this topic. In recent years, numerical simulation was performed to investigate various phenomena such as chip segmentation, force prediction and tool wear. On the other hand, some drawbacks have to be highlighted; due to the geometrical and computational complexity of the updated-Lagrangian formulation mostly used in FE codes, a cutting time of only a few milliseconds can be effectively simulated. Therefore, steady-state thermal conditions are not reached and the simulation of the thermal phenomenon may be ineffect…

A simple inverse procedure to determine heat flux on the tool in orthogonal cutting

2006

The applications of numerical simulation to machining processes have been more and more increasing in the last decade: today, a quite effective predictive capability has been reached, at least as far as global cutting variables (for instance cutting forces) are concerned. On the other hand, the capability to predict local cutting variables (i.e. stresses acting on the tool, temperature distribution, residual stresses in the machined surface) has to be furtherly improved, as well as effective experimental procedures to validate numerical results have to be developed. The aim of this paper is the proposition of an innovative approach, based on an simple inverse procedure, in order to identify…
