The effect of osmo-induced stress on product formation by Zymomonas mobilis on sucrose

The intensification of biosynthesis of fructooligosaccharides in the presence of high salt concentrations was observed during sucrose (10%) fermentation by Zymomonas mobilis 113S. A 0.6 M NaCl concentration led to an increase of oligosaccharide productivity by 3.5-fold. Sorbitol formation was increased in the presence of 0.16 M NaCl and was inhibited at highest salt concentrations. In a medium with high (65%, w/w) sucrose content the salts gave inhibitory effects on fructooligosaccharide production by lyophilised Z. mobilis cells. Coordination complexes of chromium(0) with a series of 1,3-diphenyl-6-arylfulvenes

The synthesis and structural properties of a series of chromium tricarbonyl `piano-stool' complexes bearing substituted pentafulvene ligands were studied. The complexes, tricarbonyl(1,3,6-triphenylfulvene)chromium(0) benzene hemisolvate, [Cr(C24H18)(CO)3]·0.5C6H6 (I), tricarbonyl[1,3-diphenyl-6-(3-vinylphenyl)fulvene]chromium(0), [Cr(C26H20)(CO)3] (II), and tricarbonyl[1,3-diphenyl-6-(pyren-1-yl)fulvene]chromium(0), [Cr(C34H22)(CO)3] (III), each have a distorted octahedral geometry, with the fulvene coordinated in a π–η2:π–η2:π–η2 fashion. Teaching master's degree students to read research literature

The skill to read research literature critically belongs in every university graduate’s toolbox. I have attempted to teach this skill in a master’s degree level course in programming languages over 15 years using, at various times, simulated conferences, voluntary reading exercises, evidence-based practice training, and a flipped classroom with mandatory reading assignments. I discuss my experience and analyze preliminary qualitative data on the use of evidence-based practice and a flipped classroom for this purpose.
