A series of C18-oxygenated derivatives of dehydroabietic acid were synthesized from commercial abietic acid and evaluated for their cytotoxic, antimycotic, and antiviral activities.

Atractyligenin (1) and several synthetic derivatives were tested and found to be active against tumor cell replication. Compound 1 was readily converted to the 2,15-diketo (3) or 15-keto (4) derivatives, which contain an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone. Compounds 3 and 4 showed significant cytotoxic activity against all six tested cancer cell lines and were most potent against 1A9 ovarian cancer cells with EC50 values of 0.2 and 0.3 microM, respectively. These two 1-analogues are promising lead compounds for further investigation.
Effects of ultraviolet light on immune parameters of the roach

Ultraviolet B radiation penetrates into water and can affect fish health and the immune system, as is the case with mammals. Teleost fish, the roach, were exposed to UVB irradiation in aquariums and a panel of immune parameters was determined. In addition to altered blood picture and respiratory burst by blood leukocytes, changes were noted also in major lymphatic organs. Respiratory burst and natural cytotoxicity activity of head kidney granulocytes and mitogen-activated proliferation of splenic lymphocytes were suppressed. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) constitute the most rapidly growing class of human therapeutics and the second largest class of drugs after vaccines. The treatment of B-cell malignancies and HER2/Neu(+) breast cancer has benefited considerably from the use of therapeutic mAbs, either alone or in combination with standard chemotherapy. Frequent relapses, however, demonstrate that the bioactivity of these mAbs is still suboptimal. Liver X Receptor ligand cytotoxicity in colon cancer cells and not in normal colon epithelial cells depends on LXRβ subcellular localization

Increasing evidence indicates that Liver X Receptors (LXRs) have some anticancer properties. We recently demonstrated that LXR ligands induce colon cancer cell pyroptosis through an LXRβ-dependent pathway. In the present study, we showed that human colon cancer cell lines presented differential cytoplasmic localizations of LXRβ. This localization correlated with caspase-1 activation and cell death induction under treatment with LXR ligand. The association of LXRβ with the truncated form of RXRα (t-RXRα) was responsible for the sequestration of LXRβ in the cytoplasm in colon cancer cells. Abstract The toxitity of 3,4-dichloroaniline to perch was investigated in order to compare the sensitivity of crucial life stages with common test fish like zebrafish. Although in the acute toxicity test perch were more sensitive by a factor of five, larval sensitivity was in the same range in both species as well as in other egg-laying species. In spite of different water temperature and size, the zebrafish is a good model to predict early life stage toxicity of 3,4-DCA to the compared European freshwater species. Perch larvae are not suited for early life stage tests, as they are sensible towards experimental conditions and perform early cannibalism.

In order to compare data derived from life cycle tests with zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio Ham.- Buch.), an r-strategist, with data of fish exhibiting a differing strategy of reproduction, a complete life cycle test with the guppy (Poecilia reticulata Peters) was performed with the chemical 3,4-dichloroaniline. The generation of guppies exposed during the whole life span (FI) reacted with more sensitivity than the generation exposed only as adults (Fo): Growth of adult females and reproduction was reduced significantly at 200 Μg/L in Fo, and even at 2 and 20 Μg/L in FI. A strain of Lasiodiplodia mediterranea, a fungus associated with grapevine decline in Sicily, produced several metabolites in liquid medium. The 6-epimer of the plakortide H acid (1), along with the endoperoxides plakortide E (2), plakortin (3), and dihydroplakortin (4) have been isolated from a sample of the Caribbean sponge Plakortis halichondrioides.
