Diagnosis of pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism - position paper of the Working Group in Women’s Health of the Society of Thrombosis and Hae…

2016

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major cause of maternal morbidity during pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, because there is a lack of adequate study data, management strategies for pregnancy-associated VTE must be deduced from observational stu-dies and extrapolated from recommendations for non-pregnant patients. In this review, the members of the Working Group in Women's Health of the Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (GTH) have summarised the evidence that is currently available in the literature to provide a practical approach for treating pregnancy-associated VTE. Because heparins do not cross the placenta, weight-adjusted therapeutic-dose low molecular weight heparin …

Self-reported nonceliac wheat sensitivity in an outpatient digestive endoscopy center: high frequency but insufficient medical approach.

2021

Objective: 'Self-reported wheat sensitivity' (SRWS) is a self-reported condition caused by wheat ingestion in the absence of celiac disease or wheat allergy. The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency and characteristics of SRWS in outpatients referred for digestive endoscopy. Methods: The study, performed at the University of Palermo, enrolled 496 outpatients. Results: Seven individuals (1.4%) had an already established diagnosis of celiac disease. The questionnaire was administered to the other 489 individuals: 98 subjects (20%) were SRWS, the remaining 391 served as controls (i.e. not-SRWS). SRWS patients were younger (P < 0.001), with a higher percentage of females (P = 0.…

A new method for the in situ determination of phospholipids after thin-layer separation

1973

Abstract A very sensitive method has been devised for the in situ determination of phospholipids after thin-layer chromatographic separation, which enabled us to investigate the phospholipid content of erythrocytes and ATPase preparations. The phospholipid compositions of the ATPase preparations and of the erythrocytes are different, and the relative phospholipid compositions of the Na,K-ATPase preparations are also different, which indicates that Na,K- and Ca-ATPase seem to be different with regard to their phospholipid composition. An increase in temperature during the preparation procedure yields a Ca-ATPase preparation (II), which exhibits different kinetic properties and a different ph…

Cytotoxicity of cardiotonic steroids in sensitive and multidrug-resistant leukemia cells and the link with Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase.

2015

Cardiotonic steroids have long been in clinical use for treatment of heart failure and are now emerging as promising agents in various diseases, especially cancer. Their main target is Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase, a membrane protein involved in cellular ion homeostasis. Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase has been implicated in cancer biology by affecting several cellular events and signaling pathways in both sensitive and drug-resistant cancer cells. Hence, we investigated the cytotoxic activities of 66 cardiotonic steroids and cardiotonic steroid derivatives in sensitive CCRF-CEM and multidrug-resistant CEM/ADR5000 leukemia cells. Data were then subjected to quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis (QSA…

Effect of a hyperlipidic diet on lipid composition, fluidity, and (Na+-K+)ATPase activity of rat erythrocyte membranes.

1989

Feeding rats a hyperlipidic diet in which animals were offered daily a variety of high-energy food resulted in a significant increase of serum free fatty acids and a decrease of phospholipids with respect to controls. On the contrary, there were no significant differences in erythrocyte membrane total lipid composition between the two groups. Erythrocyte membranes showed a significant decrease in saturated fatty acid content and a significant increase in (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acid content; (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids significantly decreased. Membrane fluidity, investigated by fluorescence polarization of diphenylhexatriene, significantly increased in the erythrocyte membranes of…

Separation of presynaptic Cav2 and Cav1 channel function in synaptic vesicle exo- and endocytosis by the membrane anchored Ca2+ pump PMCA

2021

Significance Synaptic vesicle (SV) release from presynaptic terminals requires nanometer precise control of action potential (AP)–triggered calcium influx through voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs). SV recycling also depends on calcium signals, though in different spatiotemporal domains. Mechanisms for separate control of SV release and recycling by AP-triggered calcium influx remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate largely independent regulation of release and recycling by two different populations of VGCCs (Cav2, Cav1), identify Cav1 as one of potentially multiple calcium entry routes for endocytosis regulation, and show functional separation of simultaneous calcium signals in the nanome…

Early alterations of the behavioural structure of mice affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy and tested in open-field

2020

Present study has been carried out to assess whether early alterations of the behavioural structure may be detected in mice affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). To this purpose, both quantitative and T-pattern analysis (TPA) were used to analyse the behaviour of two groups of male, two months old mice, 18 MDX and 18 normal as control, tested in an open-field apparatus. T-pattern analysis is a multivariate technique able to reveal hidden structural features of behaviour and, in particular, its temporal characteristics. As to quantitative analyses, mean durations evidenced a significant increase of Walking, Modified Climbing and Rearing and a significant reduction of Immobile-Sniffi…

Skaņas analizēšana elpas esamības noteikšanai

2016

Unjamming overcomes kinetic and proliferation arrest in terminally differentiated cells and promotes collective motility of carcinoma.

2019

During wound repair, branching morphogenesis and carcinoma dissemination, cellular rearrangements are fostered by a solid-to-liquid transition, known as unjamming. The biomolecular machinery behind unjamming and its pathophysiological relevance remain, however, unclear. Here, we study unjamming in a variety of normal and tumorigenic epithelial two-dimensional (2D) and 3D collectives. Biologically, the increased level of the small GTPase RAB5A sparks unjamming by promoting non-clathrin-dependent internalization of epidermal growth factor receptor that leads to hyperactivation of the kinase ERK1/2 and phosphorylation of the actin nucleator WAVE2. This cascade triggers collective motility effe…

Psychological therapies for adolescents with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or BPD features-A systematic review of randomized clinical trials …

2021

Objectives To review the effectiveness of psychological therapies for adolescents with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or BPD features. Methods We included randomized clinical trials on psychological therapies for adolescents with BPD and BPD features. Data were extracted and assessed for quality according to Cochrane guidelines, and summarized as mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for continuous data and as Odds ratios (OR) with 95% CI for dichotomous data. Risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane’s risk of bias tool for each domain. When possible, we pooled trials into meta-analyses, and used Trial Sequential Analysis (TSA) to control for random errors. Quality…
