The VST Photometric Hα Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+)

2014

The VST Photometric Halpha Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+) is surveying the southern Milky Way in u, g, r, i and Halpha at 1 arcsec angular resolution. Its footprint spans the Galactic latitude range -5 < b < +5 at all longitudes south of the celestial equator. Extensions around the Galactic Centre to Galactic latitudes +/-10 bring in much of the Galactic Bulge. This ESO public survey, begun on 28th December 2011, reaches down to 20th magnitude (10-sigma) and will provide single-epoch digital optical photometry for around 300 million stars. The observing strategy and data pipelining is described, and an appraisal of the segmented narrowband Halpha filter in us…

Maintaining dignity in vulnerability: A qualitative study of the residents' perspective on dignity in nursing homes

2016

Postprint tilgjengelig 20.03.17. Background Older people, living in nursing homes, are exposed to diverse situations, which may be associated with loss of dignity. To help them maintain their dignity, it is important to explore, how dignity is preserved in such context. Views of dignity and factors influencing dignity have been studied from both the residents’ and the care providers’ perspective. However, most of these studies pertain to experiences in the dying or the illness context. Knowledge is scarce about how older people experience their dignity within their everyday lives in nursing homes. Aim To illuminate the meaning of maintaining dignity from the perspective of older people livi…

AT1 Receptor Gene Polymorphisms in relation to Postprandial Lipemia

2011

Background. Recent data suggest that the renin-angiotensin system may be involved in triglyceride (TG) metabolism. We explored the effect of the common A1166C and C573T polymorphisms of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) gene on postprandial lipemia.Methods. Eighty-two subjects measured daytime capillary TG, and postprandial lipemia was estimated as incremental area under the TG curve. The C573T and A1166C polymorphisms of the AT1R gene were determined.Results. Postprandial lipemia was significantly higher in homozygous carriers of the 1166-C allele (9.39±8.36 mM*h/L) compared to homozygous carriers of the 1166-A allele (2.02±6.20 mM*h/L) (P<0.05). Postprandial lipemia was similar…

Cilostazol and atherogenic dyslipidemia: a clinically relevant effect

2011

Cilostazol is a reversible, selective inhibitor of PDE3A able to significantly improve walking distance in patients with intermittent claudication. However, beyond its antiplatelet and vasodilator properties, cilostazol seems to have significant effects on atherogenic dyslipidemia. The effects of cilostazol on plasma lipids, lipoproteins, apolipoproteins and postprandial lipemia are reviewed. A literature search (using Medline and Scopus) was performed up to 24 October 2010. The authors also manually reviewed the references of selected articles for any pertinent material.Cilostazol is able to significantly lower plasma triglyceride levels, with a concomitant increase in high-density lipoprot…

Management of Dyslipidemia in the Metabolic Syndrome

2007

In order to characterize the metabolic syndrome it becomes necessary to establish a number of diagnostic criteria. Because of its impact on cardiovascular morbidity/mortality, considerable attention has been focussed on the dyslipidemia accompanying the metabolic syndrome. The aim of this review is to highlight the fundamental aspects of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and the treatment of the metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia with recommendations to clinicians. The clinical expression of the metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia is characterized by hypertriglyceridemia and low levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). In addition, metabolic syndrome dyslipidemia is associated with hi…

Sonographische Darstellbarkeit der Gallenwege und Beurteilbarkeit der Gallenblasenkinetik bei gesunden Neugeborenen

2008

The gallbladder and the biliary tract of 85 neonates were sonographically examined, in the fasting state. The gallbladder was detectable in all neonates and showed a measurable contraction. Two types of biliary contraction could be observed: a concentric contraction of length, depth and width (concentric type) or a contraction of depth and width (collapse type). The grade of postprandial contraction was independent of the level of serum bilirubin. Furthermore, sonographic criteria were established allowing the differentiation of the bile ducts and their discrimination from hepatic arteries.

Off-line control of the postprandial glycemia in type 1 diabetes patients by a fuzzy logic decision support

2012

The target of this paper is to describe the use of fuzzy techniques in the development of a decision support system that allows the optimization of postprandial glycemia in type 1 diabetes patients taking into account the kind of meal taken by patients, the preprandial glycemia and the insulin resistance (the response of the body to insulin dose injection therapy). The decision support system can, in many cases, provide patients with the correct number of rapid insulin units that must be assumed to assure an optimal glycemic profile, keeping the blood glucose level close to the homeostatic condition, several hours after the meal.

Diabetes mellitus secondary to Cushing's disease

2018

Associated with important comorbidities that significantly reduce patients’ overall wellbeing and life expectancy, Cushing’s disease (CD) is the most common cause of endogenous hypercortisolism. Glucocorticoid excess can lead to diabetes, and although its prevalence is probably underestimated, up to 50% of patients with CD have varying degrees of altered glucose metabolism. Fasting glycemia may nevertheless be normal in some patients in whom glucocorticoid excess leads primarily to higher postprandial glucose levels. An oral glucose tolerance test should thus be performed in all CD patients to identify glucose metabolism abnormalities. Since diabetes mellitus (DM) is a consequence of cortis…

Development of a fuzzy expert system for the control of glycemia in type 1 diabetic patients

2011

Abstract The paper describes the structure and the characteristics of an expert system that allows the optimization of postprandial glycemia in type 1 diabetic patients. The expert system is able to provide patients with the number of rapid insulin units that must be taken in order to keep the blood glucose level close to the omeostatic condition in the hours following a meal.

Chronic consumption of an inositol-enriched beverage ameliorates endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes

2015

The anti-diabetic properties of an inositol-enriched beverage (IEB) on the endothelial function and redox status in diabetic subjects were assessed. This was a 12-week, double-blind randomized controlled trial employing thirty-eight diabetic subjects that were divided into two intervention groups: one receiving an IEB and the other a sucrose-enriched beverage. Subjects consuming IEB exhibited a significant decrease in triacylglycerol (8.82%) and HbA1c (4.53%) levels. Continuous glucose monitoring revealed a significant net reduction of 2.51 and 7.11% during postprandial and overnight fasting periods after consumption of IEB, respectively. Moreover, IEB improved endothelial function by reduc…
