Développement de méthodes de référence pour les biomarqueurs du bilan lipidique : application au contrôle qualité en biologie clinique
2013
Reliable measurements in medical biology are essential for early screening and appropriate follow-up of patients. Ensuring metrological traceability of clinical measurements to higher order reference methods or certified reference materials enables to obtain comparable results over time and between different laboratories that could use different methods to quantify the same biomarker. In this study, reference methods were developed and validated for lipid profile biomarkers (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, and LDL-C). Their value added in proficiency testing schemes was demonstrated against consensus mean. They were also used to characterize a certified reference material (CRM) that…
The distribution of Rare Earth Elements discriminates the growth substrate of Vitis vinifera L.
2021
Sustainable agricultural, food-related strategies and geographic traceability require understanding of the plant physiological response to stress potentially generated by contaminated soils. Here, we have investigated the effect of contaminated substrate on growth of Vitis vinifera L. plants analysing the distribution of full Rare Earth Elements (REE) spectra in different parts of the plant. Experiments were carried out using pristine plants growing in a handmade substrate (blank experiment) and in REE artificially-enriched soil (spiked experiment). Our results show that both plant mass and REE amount in leaves are not influenced by the substrate enrichment while roots are by one-order of m…
New chemiometric technique applied to traceability of Sicilian honey of Sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L.)
The consumers have an increasing interest about food traceability with respect to safety, quality and typicality issues. Food traceability is an important issue in food safety and quality control, with impacts on food security, its quantity and overall availability. Furthermore, the possibility of tracing the origin of foodstuff is assuming an increasingly important role at the legislative level, as a tool that may allow to prove on product authenticity and to control adulteration. So, establish systems to trace food products through specified stages of production, processing and distribution play a key role also to ensure food safety. In the last years, several of analytical techniques hav…
Development of multiplex-PCR protocol to amplify 12S and 16S rRNA genes of mtDNA for traceability of Sicilian mono-species dairy products.
2015
Species identification in dairy sector is important not only to safeguard public health but also to verify compliance with the Production Regulations of many typical dairy products (PDO/PGI). The most common fraud in dairy sector is represented by the mixture of milks from different species, resulting in mislabeling of protected designation of origin (PDO) products. For a rapid, specific and sensitive identification of cattle’s, sheep’s and goat’s milk in mono-species Sicilian dairy products, species-specific multiplex-PCR protocol was developed. DNA from blood and experimental cheeses of Sicilian autochthonous breeds was used to amplify the 12S and 16S rRNA genes of the mitochondrial DNA. …
Teaching Green Analytical and Synthesis Chemistry: Performing Laboratory Experiments in a Greener Way
2019
Our future challenges in resource, environmental and societal sustainability demand efficient and benign-by-design scientific technologies for working with chemical processes and products. In this chapter, we have considered the major aspects of green analytical and synthetic chemistry as a new paradigm and its integration with higher education course curriculum. Teaching green analytical chemistry must be focused on analytical parameters and practices more than on the incorporation of the so-called green parameters to the basic analytical properties. Thus accuracy, representativeness, traceability, sensitivity and selectivity in the renewed paradigmatic chemistry have been complemented and…
The International Measurement Evaluation Programme (IMEP) IMEP-6: "Trace elements in water"
1998
The sixth round of the International Measurement Evaluation Programme (IMEP) is presented. The programme offers reference values, established by primary methods of measurement, against which participating laboratories can evaluate their performance. The degree of comparability is thus established against the most objective references available at present. In IMEP-6, reference values for total concentrations of 14 trace elements in a synthetic and a natural water were established mainly by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). For the majority of the measurands, results traceable to the international system of units (SI) and having expanded uncertainties, U (k=2), of 2% could be establi…
An Embedded Biometric Sensor for Ubiquitous Authentication
2013
Communication networks and distributed technologies move people towards the era of ubiquitous computing. An ubiquitous environment needs many authentication sensors for users recognition, in order to provide a secure infrastructure for both user access to resources and services and information management. Today the security requirements must ensure secure and trusted user information to protect sensitive data resource access and they could be used for user traceability inside the platform. Conventional authentication systems, based on username and password, are in crisis since they are not able to guarantee a suitable security level for several applications. Biometric authentication systems…
Agri-food Supply Chain Traceability for Fruit and Vegetable Cooperatives Using Blockchain Technology
2019
12S rRNA mitochondrial gene as marker to trace Sicilian mono-species dairy products
2016
Abstract For a rapid, specific and sensitive identification of cows', ewes' and goats' milk in mono-species Sicilian dairy products, species-specific duplex-PCR protocol was applied. DNA samples from blood and experimental cheeses of Sicilian autochthonous breeds were extracted to amplify the 12S rRNA (and part of 16S rRNA in case of Ovis aries ) mitochondrial species-specific gene fragment. The use of species-specific primers for Bos taurus , Capra hircus and Ovis aries species, after electrophoresis on agarose gel, yielded fragments of 256 bp, 326 bp and 172 bp, respectively. Amplification by duplex - PCR of DNA pools from two species showed detection thresholds of 0.1% of “contaminant” D…
ANALYSIS OF MICROSATELLITE MARKERS IN SICILIAN GOATS BREED FOR TRACEABILITY OF GIRGENTANA TYPICAL DAIRY PRODUCTS
2013
The establishment of useful analytical methods able to ensure the origin of the products, including the breed used, are important in maintaining the reliability of these products in order to develop a market segment. Traceability, obtained by molecular analysis, could be a reliable proposal for the authentication and valorization of animal products. In Sicily, the three most important dairy goat breeds are Girgentana (GR), Maltese (ML) and Derivata di Siria (DS). The GR is an endangered autochthonous goat breed. Preservation of endangered breeds could be achieved by establishing economic reasons for their survival. The aim of this work was to verify the use of microsatellite markers to asse…
