How online advertising competes with user-generated content in TripAdvisor. A neuroscientific approach

Drawing on cognitive load theory, congruence research, and dual processing models, the purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of online advertising in social media. To this end, three separate studies were conducted. First, using eye-tracking and electroencephalography, we examine the differences, based on whether or not an ad is embedded, in subjects’ visual attention and engagement in a TripAdvisor webpage. Pictorial content, sequence of conflicting online reviews and consumer decision-making: the stimulus-organism-response model revisited

Abstract Conflicting online reviews challenge the consumer’s decision-making processes. Furthermore, increase in visual content, both positive and negative, adds complexity. This study analyses conflicting online reviews based on text and photos using automatic processing patterns and conscious perceptions. The study is built on the stimulus-organism-response model revisited by Jacoby (2002), and captures nonlinear eye-tracking data and a questionnaire. Impact of age, performance and athletic event on injury rates in master athletics - First results from an ongoing prospective study

Objectives: Recent studies have identified rates of injuries in young elite athletes during major athletic events. However, no such data exist on master athletes. The aim of this study was to assess incidence and types of injuries during the 2012 European Veteran Athletics Championships as a function of age, performance and athletic discipline. Methods: Report forms were used to identify injured athletes and injury types. Analysis included age (grouped in five-year bands beginning at age 35 years), athletic event, and age-graded performance. The effect of surface charge on nonspecific uptake and cytotoxicity of CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots

In this work, cytotoxicity and cellular impedance response was compared for CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with positively charged cysteamine–QDs, negatively charged dihydrolipoic acid–QDs and zwitterionic D-penicillamine–QDs exposed to canine kidney MDCKII cells. Pretreatment of cells with pharmacological inhibitors suggested that the uptake of nanoparticles was largely due to receptor-independent pathways or spontaneous entry for carboxylated and zwitterionic QDs, while for amine-functionalized particles involvement of cholesterol-enriched membrane domains is conceivable. Modeling of primary defect aggregation in tracks of swift heavy ions in LiF

To simulate aggregation of primary F centers created along the path of swift heavy ions in LiF, Monte Carlo simulations were developed. Parameters relevant for defect aggregation as a result of their random hopping, such as the migration energy, temperature in the track, initial defect concentration, and diffusion time, were estimated from available experimental data. It is estimated that in the electronically excited state and under temperature locally increased up to 1200 K F centers are mobile enough to make several tens of hops. Why are hydrogen ions best for MeV ion beam lithography?

The exposure characteristics of poly-(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for 2MeV ^1H^+, 3MeV ^4He^2^+ and 6MeV ^1^2C^3^+ have been investigated. The samples were characterised using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Development was carried out using a 7:3 propan-2-ol:H"2O mixture to determine clearing and cross-linking fluences. It was found that protons had a considerably wider tolerance to exposure variations and a smaller span of doses within the ion track. Excitation of different chromium centres by synchrotron radiation in MgO:Cr single crystals

The excitation spectra for the emissions of chromium-containing centres have been measured at 10 K using synchrotron radiation of 4–32 eV in MgO single crystals with different content of Cr$^{3+}$ (5–850 ppm) and Ca$^{2+}$ impurity ions. Both virgin crystals and the samples preliminarily irradiated with x-rays at 295 K have been studied. The role of complex chromium centres containing two Cr$^{3+}$ and a cation vacancy (sometimes nearby a Ca$^{2+}$ ion) on the luminescence processes and the transformation/creation of structural defects has been analysed. Pillararene-based fluorescent sensors for the tracking of organic compounds

Abstract Fluorescent chemosensors based on pillararene complexes represent a new, promising branch in sensor technology. Because of CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions, aliphatic chains are well suited for the columnar cavities of pillararenes and bulky or sheet-like (sub)structures can be arranged on the portals. Thus, pillararenes form versatile receptors and an alteration of the fluorescence behavior upon complexation ensures the function of these chemosensors as the reporter. Although this field of research exists only since a few years, remarkable chemosensors were developed for substances as diverse as medical drugs, biochemicals, herbicides and explosives.
