Diagnosis in track and field performances past the 1988 Ben Johnson doping scandal

1999

Beginning with the early 1960s, a lot of performance supporting effects have been integrated in the structure of track and field training, such as technical progress, theoretical knowledge of the training process, development of societies and medical steps, which among others include the forbidden use of steroids or other doping ‘techniques’. Since the integration of those effects took place quite fast, a logistic growth of world class performances concerning the years 1960–1988 can be observed in many disciplines especially if they were not far developed at the beginning of this period. Eight years (1989–1996) later, doping tests of world class athletes have spread (or should have spread) …

Reaching for different ends through tenure track—institutional logics in university career systems

2020

AbstractIn this study, we used the institutional logics perspective to identify the logics underpinning the tenure track career system, how the logics manifest themselves in recruitment and performance management and how academic leaders and academics negotiate between the logics. The study contributes to research on governance dynamics in academia and to universities’ organisational transformation in the context of strategic actorhood. The data comprised interviews with academic leaders (vice-rectors, deans, department heads) and academics in tenure track positions at two Finnish universities. Empirically, the study explores two key areas of human resource management: recruitment and perfo…

Unraveling the exhumation history of high-pressure ophiolites using magnetite (U-Th-Sm)/He thermochronometry

2020

International audience; Magnetite is a ubiquitous oxide in ultramafic and mafic rocks, which is present in a large range of geological and tectonic settings. In the case of high-pressure ultramafic rocks, exhumation timing is commonly constrained by geochronometers in nearby lithologies. The development of the magnetite (U-Th-Sm)/He method (MgHe) has opened new perspectives to refine the exhumation history of such rocks. However no thermal history has been deduced using MgHe data so far. Here we applied MgHe dating to magnetite from an HP-LT alpine ophiolite body (Rocher Blanc) from the Schistes lustres units (Western Alps, France) where part the P-T-t history is constrained to further refi…

Physical oceanography, sea-bed photographs and videos of benthos from the Weddell Sea taken with remote operated vehicle CHEROKEE during POLARSTERN c…

2010

The marine ecosystem on the eastern shelf of the Antarctic Peninsula was surveyed 5 and 12 years after the climate-induced collapse of the Larsen A and B ice shelves. An impoverished benthic fauna was discovered, that included deep-sea species presumed to be remnants from ice-covered conditions. The current structure of various ecosystem components appears to result from extremely different response rates to the change from an oligotrophic sub-ice-shelf ecosystem to a productive shelf ecosystem. Meiobenthic communities remained impoverished only inside the embayments. On local scales, macro- and mega-epibenthic diversity was generally low, with pioneer species and typical Antarctic megabent…

Availability in BitTorrent Systems

2007

In this paper, we investigate the problem of highly available, massive-scale file distribution in the Internet. To this end, we conduct a large-scale measurement study of BitTorrent, a popular class of systems that use swarms of actively downloading peers to assist each other in file distribution. The first generation of BitTorrent systems used a central tracker to enable coordination among peers, resulting in low availability due to the tracker's single point of failure. Our study analyzes the prevalence and impact of two recent trends to improve BitTorrent availability: (i) use of multiple trackers, and (ii) use of Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs), both of which also help to balance load be…

Tracking the Preferences of Users Using Weak Estimators

2011

Published version of am article from the book:AI 2011: Advances in Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher on SpringerLink:http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-25832-9_81 Since a social network, by definition, is so diverse, the problem of estimating the preferences of its users is becoming increasingly essential for personalized applications which range from service recommender systems to the targeted advertising of services. However, unlike traditional estimation problems where the underlying target distribution is stationary, estimating a user’s interests, typically, involves non-stationary distributions. The consequent time varying nature of the distribution to be trac…

Adaptive Tracking Control of Nonlinear Time-Varying Systems with Unknown Control Coefficients and Unknown Time-Varying Parameters

2019

This paper investigates the tracking control of a class of strict-feedback uncertain nonlinear systems in the presence of unknown signs of control coefficients and unknown time-varying parameters as well as unknown disturbances. A robust adaptive controller and a new decoupled backstepping approach to stability analysis are developed by constructing a new compensation scheme. By introducing a Nussbaum function and a new type of hyperbolic tangent function, the effects of unknown time-varying parameters and unknown control coefficients are effectively compensated. By using the decoupled backstepping technique, it is proved that under the proposed control, all closed-loop states are uniform u…

Elaboración un instrumento para conocer las características de la banda sonora de la programación infantil de televisión

2014

Television is one of the most important elements in the construction of the musical and audible reality of children and teenagers. It offers a selected and edited version of a musical environment, with an indisputable level of communicative and patrimonial influence. This paper is part of a research project that sets out to know what children are listening to in children’s television programming, in a sample of Latin American television coverage. The general objective has been to establish the parameters of everyday listening experiences and to create an instrument which is able to determine the objective elements of listening environments through their most notable medium: the soundtrack o…

Tracking control of network distributed systems in presence of variable time delay and loss of information

2006

This paper deals with the control of network distributed systems which has been at the centre of interest in a wide area of research in the last few year. The control of such systems is very difficult because the communication networks inevitably introduce variable time delays and possible lost of samples. In particular, it is proposed an extension of the approach, derived in the contest of the optimal stochastic regulator problem [1], [2], to the remote tracking problem considering a distributed control system in which the signals from the transducers to the controller and from the controller to the actuator are transmitted through a communication network with variable delays and possible …
