Recruitment of Xrn1 to stress-induced genes allows efficient transcription by controlling RNA polymerase II backtracking

2020

A new paradigm has emerged proposing that the crosstalk between nuclear transcription and cytoplasmic mRNA stability keeps robust mRNA levels in cells under steady-state conditions. A key piece in this crosstalk is the highly conserved 5′–3′ RNA exonuclease Xrn1, which degrades most cytoplasmic mRNAs but also associates with nuclear chromatin to activate transcription by not well-understood mechanisms. Here, we investigated the role of Xrn1 in the transcriptional response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells to osmotic stress. We show that a lack of Xrn1 results in much lower transcriptional induction of the upregulated genes but in similar high levels of their transcripts because of parallel …

How the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and their voters veered to the radical right, 2013–2017

2019

Abstract Until 2017, Germany was an exception to the success of radical right parties in postwar Europe. We provide new evidence for the transformation of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to a radical right party drawing upon social media data. Further, we demonstrate that the AfD's electorate now matches the radical right template of other countries and that its trajectory mirrors the ideological shift of the party. Using data from the 2013 to 2017 series of German Longitudinal Elections Study (GLES) tracking polls, we employ multilevel modelling to test our argument on support for the AfD. We find the AfD's support now resembles the image of European radical right voters. Specifically, g…

Registration of arbitrary multi-view 3D acquisitions

2013

International audience; To register 3D meshes representing smooth surfaces we track the 3D digitization system using photogrammetric techniques and calibrations. We present an example by digitizing a 800 mm x 600 mm portion of a car door. To increase the tracking accuracy the 3D scanner is placed in a cubic frame of side 0.5 m covered with 78 targets. The target frame moves in a volume that is approximately 1100 mm x 850 mm x 900 mm, to digitize the area of interest. Using four cameras this target frame is tracked with of an accuracy of 0.03 mm spatially and 0.180 mrad angularly. A registration accuracy between 0.1 mm and 2 mm is reached. This method can be used for the registration of mesh…

Adaptive backstepping based consensus tracking of uncertain nonlinear systems with event-triggered communication

2021

Abstract This paper investigates the consensus tracking problem for a class of uncertain high-order nonlinear systems with parametric uncertainties and event-triggered communication. Under a directed communication condition, a totally distributed adaptive backstepping based control scheme is presented. Specifically, a decentralized triggering condition is adopted in this paper such that continuous monitoring of neighboring states, as required in some existing results, can be avoided. Besides, to handle the non-differentiability problem of virtual controllers, which arises from the utilization of neighboring states collected only at the triggering instants, the virtual controllers in each re…

Robust fault tolerant tracking controller design for vehicle dynamics: A descriptor approach

2015

Abstract In this paper, an active Fault Tolerant Tracking Controller (FTTC) scheme dedicated to vehicle dynamics system is proposed. To address the challenging problem, an uncertain dynamic model of the vehicle is firstly developed, by considering the lateral forces nonlinearities as a Takagi–Sugeno (TS) representation, the sideslip angle as unmeasurable premise variables and the road bank angle as an unknown input. Subsequently, the vehicle dynamic states with the sensor faults are jointly estimated by a descriptor observer on the basis of the roll rate and the steering angle measures. Then a fault tolerant tracking controller is synthesized and solutions are proposed in terms of Linear Ma…

A modified observer-based prediction approach for industrial applications

2013

The prediction of key variables has great significance to monitor the running status of industrial systems. In this paper, a novel data-driven design of variable predictor is proposed. The basic idea is the realization of prediction observer, which is modified from the observer-based fault diagnose method. Different from the standard data-driven approaches, the proposed scheme is adopted for the dynamic systems due to the superior tracking ability of output observer. Additionally, by introducing an extra design freedom and the estimation of measured value, it can also be used for the case that the key variable is not on-line measurable. Finally, the proposed prediction scheme is applied to …

Approximation-based adaptive tracking control of stochastic nonlinear systems with a general form

2014

In this paper, an approximation-based adaptive tracking control scheme is proposed for a class of stochastic nonlinear systems with a more general structure. Fuzzy logical systems are used to approximate unknown nonlinearities in the controller design procedure and the backstepping technique is utilized to construct a state-feedback adaptive controller. The proposed controller can guarantee that all the signals in the closed-loop system are fourth-moment semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded and the tracking error eventually converges to a small neighborhood around the origin. Simulation results are used to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Gender Peer Effects in University: Evidence from a Randomized Experiment

2010

Recent studies for primary and secondary education find positive effects of the share of girls in the classroom on achievement of boys and girls. This study examines whether these results can be extrapolated to post-secondary education. We conduct an experiment in which the shares of girls in workgroups for first year students in economics and business are manipulated and students are randomly assigned to these groups. Boys tend to postpone their dropout decision when surrounded by more girls, and there is also a modest reduction in early absenteeism. On the other hand, boys perform worse on courses with high math content when assigned to a group with many girls. Overall, however, we fail t…

Solid sediment transport in turbulent channel flow over irregular rough boundaries

2017

Abstract The presence of a loading of dispersed particles in a turbulent flow affects the dynamics of the carrier flow field which, in turn, drives grains movement. The focus of the paper is on the analysis of the coupling effects between near-bed turbulence structures and the dynamics of dispersed suspended solid particles in wall-bounded turbulent multiphase flows. We consider turbulent horizontal channel flows bounded by rough boundaries. The friction Reynolds number of the unladen flow is R e τ = 180 and the dispersed phase spans one order of magnitude of particle diameter. To analyze sedimentation and suspended phase transport, we adopt concepts and modeling ideas derived from the Eule…
