Modelling pavement surface characteristics for noise prediction through Bailey-related indicators
2021
The aggregate gradation of bituminous mixtures (hot mix asphalts, HMA) is one of the major factors affecting their surface texture. In turn, this latter is a crucial factor and influences drivers and bystanders’ safety, comfort, and health. Despite this, the design of texture levels still lacks sound bases and dedicated algorithms and this negatively affects the acoustic design of bituminous mixtures. Consequently, the objectives of this study were confined into the derivation of relationships to be used in mix design to predict texture levels. Experimental data were analyzed, in the pursuit of setting up appropriate models and algorithms. Analyses involved the consideration of Bailey-relat…
Infrastrutture ferroviarie, metropolitane, tranviarie e per ferrovie speciali. Elementi di pianificazione e di progettazione.
2017
Antihyperalgesic and analgesic properties of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist neramexane in a human surrogate model of neurogenic …
2006
Abstract NMDA-receptors are a major target in the prevention and treatment of hyperalgesic pain states in neuropathic pain. However, previous studies revealed equivocal results depending on study design and efficacy parameters. We tested the analgesic (generalized reduction of generation and processing of nociceptive signalling) and anti-hyperalgesic (prevention of central sensitization) properties of the NMDA-receptor antagonist neramexane and the potassium channel opener flupirtine in the intradermal capsaicin injection model. Furthermore, we tested the effect on pain summation (wind up). Eighteen healthy subjects received either a single dose of neramexane (40 mg p.o.), flupirtine (100 m…
Protection of rabbits against rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease with a vaccinia-RHDV recombinant virus
1996
In order to protect domestic and wild rabbits against RVHD, we constructed a recombinant vaccinia-RHDV virus, using the Copenhagen strain of the vaccinia virus. This recombinant virus expressed the RHDV capsid protein (VP60). Analysis of the expressed product showed that the recombinant protein, which is 60 kDa in size, was antigenic as revealed by its reactions in immunoprecipitation and indirect immunofluorescence with the antibodies raised against RHDV. The recombinant virus induced high level of RHDV specific antibodies in rabbits following immunization. Inoculations by both the intradermal and oral routes allow protection of animals against a challenge with virulent RHDV.
The Regionalization of National Input–Output Tables: A Review of the Performance of Two Key Non-survey Methods
2018
This chapter reviews the available empirical evidence on the performance of Flegg’s location quotient (FLQ) and Kronenberg’s Cross-Hauling Adjusted Regionalization Method (CHARM), a relatively new non-survey technique that accounts explicitly for cross-hauling when constructing regional input–output tables. The performance of the FLQ and related formulae is evaluated using official data for 20 Finnish and 16 South Korean regions. The results confirm previous findings that the FLQ can produce far more accurate estimates of regional output multipliers than can simpler LQ-based formulae such as the SLQ and CILQ. We also explore possible ways of determining suitable values for the unknown param…

Transcription of α2 Integrin Gene in Osteosarcoma Cells Is Enhanced by Tumor Promoters
1998
Integrin alpha2beta1 is a heterodimeric transmembrane receptor for collagens. In osteogenic cells the expression of alpha2beta1 integrin is induced by both Kirsten sarcoma virus and chemical transformation. The association of alpha2 integrin with transformed cell phenotype was studied further by testing the effects of two tumor promoters, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) and okadaic acid (OA), on human MG-63 osteosarcoma cells. TPA, an activator of protein kinase C, increased the cell surface expression of alpha2 integrin and the corresponding mRNA levels. Nuclear run-on assays indicated that TPA activated the transcription of alpha2 integrin gene. TPA also slightly increased the …

Terms of trade, catch-up, and home-market effect: The example of Japan
2007
Abstract This paper explores theoretically and empirically the medium- and long-run relation of the terms of trade (ratio of traded goods prices) and economic growth of a pair of countries—one of which experiences a major catch-up process towards the other. Two theoretical interdependencies between the terms of trade and economic growth are offered: the home-market effect and the productivity-shock effect. These two effects are tested against each other in a cointegration analysis on data for Japan and the US from 1971 until 1997. Income is cointegrated with the terms of trade. The relevant empirical channel is the home-market effect. However, financial-market effects appear also to be rele…
