Deutschlands Recht außerhalb Deutschlands. Ausgewählte usuelle Wortverbindungen im BGB und deren Wiedergabe in polnischen Übersetzungen

2015

The article focuses on the German Civil Code and its translations into Polish. After it came into force in 1900, the Civil Code was also binding in the western parts of contemporary Poland until it was repealed by a unified Polish Civil Code after the Second World War. Selected usual word combinations in the German civil law have been analysed, in order to check whether their Polish counterparts are still usual in the Polish legal language. Therefore the article deals with a question which according to Lombardi’s opinion (2007: 119) is a desideratum research.

Adaption and validation of the German version of the basic psychological needs in physical education scale

2013

It is important to understand students’ motivation regarding physical activity to investigate the global issue physical inactivity. Based on the self-determination theory (SDT: Ryan & Deci, 2002), which is one of the most important frameworks in explaining motivation, students need to be emotionally satisfied in order to put effort towards a certain goal. The Basic Psychological Needs Theory is one sub-theory of the self-determination theory, which explains that constructs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness need to be satisfied in all humans in order to increase well-being. It is important to understand students’ motivation regarding physical activity to investigate the global issue o…

Linguistic, Contextual, and Experiential Equivalence Issues in the Adaptation of a Performance-Based Assessment of Generic Skills in Higher Education

2022

This qualitative study investigated the various linguistic, contextual, and experiential equivalence issues embedded in a performance-based instrument aimed at assessing generic skills in higher education. A rigorous translation and adaptation process (American English to Finnish) was conducted on one instrument, namely Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) International. The data were obtained from cognitive laboratories (n = 13), with think-alouds and follow-up interviews conducted among Finnish undergraduate students. Content logs were created, and the data were analyzed thematically. The findings revealed that linguistic and contextual equivalence issues were more prominent than experie…

“If you can’t stand the meat, stay out of the kitchen” : Translation of verbal humour in television series Coupling

2009

Suurin osa Suomessa näytettävistä televisio-ohjelmista on vieraskielisiä. Monet näistä ohjelmista ovat komedioita, joissa huumori usein perustuu sanaleikkeihin ja verbaaliseen huumoriin. Tästä syystä on tärkeää kiinnittää huomiota näiden televisio-ohjelmien suomenkielisiin käännöksiin. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, millä tavoin kääntäjät selviytyvät hankalista ja usein mahdottomista sanaleikeistä sekä kulttuuriin liittyvästä huumorista. Tarkoituksena on myös ottaa selvää, mitä eri strategioita kääntäjä käyttää hankalaa vitsiä kääntäessään. Tämän tutkimuksen aineistona käytettiin brittiläistä komediaohjelmaa Paritellen, koska samankaltaisia tutkimuksia on aiemmin tehty amer…

CVB3 VP1 interacts with MAT1 to inhibit cell proliferation by interfering with Cdk-activating kinase complex activity in CVB3-induced acute pancreati…

2021

Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) belongs to the genus Enterovirus of the family Picornaviridae and can cause acute acinar pancreatitis in adults. However, the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis underlying CVB3-induced acute pancreatitis have remained unclear. In this study, we discovered that CVB3 capsid protein VP1 inhibited pancreatic cell proliferation and exerted strong cytopathic effects on HPAC cells. Through yeast two-hybrid, co-immunoprecipitation, and confocal microscopy, we show that Menage a trois 1 (MAT1), a subunit of the Cdk-Activating Kinase (CAK) complex involved in cell proliferation and transcription, is a novel interaction protein with CVB3 VP1. Moreover, CVB3 VP1 inhibited MAT…

The Extracellular δ-Domain is Essential for the Formation of CD81 Tetraspanin Webs

2014

AbstractCD81 is a ubiquitously expressed member of the tetraspanin family. It forms large molecular platforms, so-called tetraspanin webs that play physiological roles in a variety of cellular functions and are involved in viral and parasite infections. We have investigated which part of the CD81 molecule is required for the formation of domains in the cell membranes of T-cells and hepatocytes. Surprisingly, we find that large CD81 platforms assemble via the short extracellular δ-domain, independent from a strong primary partner binding and from weak interactions mediated by palmitoylation. The δ-domain is also essential for the platforms to function during viral entry. We propose that, ins…

Molecular Basis of SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1-Induced Immune Translational Shutdown as Revealed by All-Atom Simulations.

2021

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic represents the most severe global health crisis in modern human history. One of the major SARS-CoV-2 virulence factors is nonstructural protein 1 (Nsp1), which, outcompeting with the binding of host mRNA to the human ribosome, triggers a translation shutdown of the host immune system. Here, microsecond-long all-atom simulations of the C-terminal portion of the SARS-CoV-2/SARS-CoV Nsp1 in complex with the 40S ribosome disclose that SARS-CoV-2 Nsp1 has evolved from its SARS-CoV ortholog to more effectively hijack the ribosome by undergoing a critical switch of Q/E158 and E/Q159 residues that perfects Nsp1's interactions…

PTC124-mediated translational readthrough of a nonsense mutation causing Usher syndrome type 1C.

2011

We investigated the therapeutic potential of the premature termination codon (PTC) readthrough-inducing drug PTC124 in treating the retinal phenotype of Usher syndrome, caused by a nonsense mutation in the USH1C gene. Applications in cell culture, organotypic retina cultures, and mice in vivo revealed significant readthrough and the recovery of protein function. In comparison with other readthrough drugs, namely the clinically approved readthrough-inducing aminoglycoside gentamicin, PTC124 exhibits significant better retinal biocompatibility. Its high readthrough efficiency in combination with excellent biocompatibility makes PTC124 a promising therapeutic agent for PTCs in USH1C, as well a…

European Women Writers Translated into Spanish in the Eighteenth-Century: a Global Approach

2012

In eighteenth-century Spain, translations of women authors (and more generally, their being known -read, but also simply heard of- by the Spanish public) were vital in building of a legitimacy for women's reading, writing and publishing. Due to the lack of intellectual references in their own country, Spanish eighteenth-century women writers had to find predecessors in their contemporaries in Europe, particularly in France, to resignify the figure of the woman writer and intellectual, in an age when discourses on gender and women's presence in new public spaces of sociability and the republic of letters were undergoing significant challenges. The presence of works by female authors translat…

The audiovisual translation of wordplay illustrated by the example of the Ecuadorian web series Enchufe.tv

2018

The ongoing internationalization of audiovisual media increases the need for new ways of overcoming linguistic barriers. In Germany, where the common technique has always been dubbing, subtitles are however becoming more and more popular. The present article will deal with the application possibilities of subtitles in audiovisual translation with reference to humoristic elements. The article will present two theoretical approaches to the translation of humour which will be then put into practice by using three sketches of the Ecuadorian web series Enchufe.tv as an example. All three sketches are based on wordplays, a manifestation of humour which is extremely difficult to reproduce in other…
