Characterisation of NO synthases from the alga Klebsormidium nitens
2022
Nitric oxide (NO) is an important cellular signaling molecule regulating various physiological processes, in both animals and plants. In animals, NO synthesis is mainly catalyzed by NO synthase (NOS) enzymes. In plants, NOS-like activities sensitive to mammalian NOS inhibitors have been measured, although no sequences encoding mammalian NOS have been found in land plants. Interestingly, we identified NOS-like sequences in about twenty algae species. These latter include the filamentous Charophyta green algae Klebsormidium nitens, a biological model to study the early transition step from aquatic algae to land plants. Currently, two NOS were identified in K. nitens genome: i) KnNOS1 which po…
Identification and functional characterization of S-nitrosated proteins from Klebsormidium nitens, a model alga to study plant adaptation to land
2022
The small gaseous molecule nitric oxide (NO) is well established as a major ubiquitous component of cell signalling. A key signalling mechanism mediating NO effects is S-nitrosation, a post-translational modification by which NO can impact the target protein activities, subcellular localizations, and capacities to form protein complexes. The identification of proteins targeted by NO is of major interest in order to elucidate NO functions. Interestingly, land plants lack NO synthase (NOS), which is the main enzyme for NO synthesis in metazoans, while a few algal species possess it, thus raising many interrogations. Therefore, we focused on the identification of S-nitrosated proteins during s…

Vulnerability of algae and seagrasses to climate change
2013
Biodiversity is undergoing rapid and worrying changes, partially driven by anthropogenic activities. Human impacts and climate change (e.g. increasing temperature and ocean acidification) represent the most serious threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Aim of this study was to assess, analysing the scientific literature and published data, how climate change can affect algae and seagrasses, evaluating their vulnerability and the possibility to use these organisms as indicators. Algae and seagrasses have a central role for several important ecological processes in aquatic ecosystems, and their loss can lead repercussions for the ecological function. Climate stressors affected ac…
Uzvedības iezīmju, stresa pārvarēšanas stratēģiju, traumatiskas pagātnes pieredzes un ģimenes locekļa alkohola atkarības pieredze bērnībā saistības
2016
2008
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tuottaa uutta tietoa alkoholikentän rakenteesta ja to…

Stress Assessment of Vestibular Endurance Training for Civil Aviation Flight Students Based on EEG
2021
AbstractObjectiveThe main goal of our study is to clarify the EEG characteristics of the stress response caused by vestibular endurance training under the real conditions.MethodsTen pilot trainees received a series of acute anti-vertigo training stimulations on the rotary ladder while recording electroencephalographic data (64 electrodes). Afterwards, the subject’s anti-vertigo ability was tested for the best performance after 1 month of training, and verifying whether it is relating to the EEG signals we collected before.Results(1) The absolute power ofαwaves in the C3 and C4 regions is same as the difference between 1 min before and 2 min after stimulation, and their activity is enhanced …
Oxidative Stress in COPD.
2019
Numerous studies over the years have shown that oxidative stress plays a major role in the development of the disease. Oxidative stress involvement in COPD opens up the possibility of using antioxidant therapies in the treatment of the disease. However, so far, these therapies have shown no clinical benefit indicating that more basic research efforts are needed to understand the underlying mechanisms by which oxidative stress leads to the development of COPD.
An Intercellular Flow of Glutathione Regulated by Interleukin 6 Links Astrocytes and the Liver in the Pathophysiology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
2021
Oxidative stress has been proposed as a major mechanism of damage to motor neurons associated with the progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Astrocytes are the most numerous glial cells in the central nervous system and, under physiological conditions, protect neurons from oxidative damage. However, it is uncertain how their reactive phenotype may affect motor neurons during ALS progression. In two different ALS mouse models (SOD1G93A and FUS-R521C), we found that increased levels of proinflammatory interleukin 6 facilitate glutathione (GSH) release from the liver to blood circulation, which can reach the astrocytes and be channeled towards motor neurons as a mechanism of anti…
