Lindane-induced changes in carbohydrate metabolism in Anguilla anguilla

Abstract 1. Anguilla anguilla (L.) was exposed to a sublethal concentration of 0.167 ppm (0.25 of the 96-hr lc 50 ) of lindane for 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr. 2. Changes in glycogen, glucose, pyruvate and lactate contents of liver and muscle after lindane exposure, were studied. 3. Muscle and liver glycogen levels decreased significantly during the exposure time. Muscle glucose values increased but on the other hand we found a decrease in those of liver. 4. Muscle and liver pyruvate content increased as did lactate levels in both tissues. 5. The observed effects of lindane on carbohydrate metabolism in fish are discussed in relation to acute stress syndrome.
CRP-induced levels of oxidative stress are higher in brain than aortic endothelial cells

C-reactive protein (CRP) has been demonstrated to induce blood-brain barrier disruption (BBB) involving NAD(P)H-oxidase dependent oxidative stress. It is unclear why CRP affects the BBB and not other vascular beds following stroke. Therefore we examined CRP receptor and NAD(P)H-oxidase expression levels in bovine brain- (BEC) and aortic endothelial cells. Dichlorodihydrofluorescein measurements revealed significantly higher CRP-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in BEC. Protein expression of the CRP-receptors CD16, CD32 and of the NAD(P)H-oxidase subunit p22phox were also significantly higher in BEC. Problem Gestational diabetes (GD) may be associated with temporarily reduced immune tolerance toward alloantigens for the time of pregnancy. The aim of this study was to assess anti-HLA-class I and -II antibodies as markers for an aberrant immunostimulation in women with GD. A close relation between different forms of dysganglionosis such as intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) type B and aganglionosis has been established. No systematic analysis of other malformations and diseases accompanying IND has been made as yet. Congenital malformations and perinatal morbidity were analyzed in 109 patients with IND seen at the Department of Pediatric Surgery in Mainz from 1977 to 1996. The effects of high dose ascorbic acid (10 000 mg·kg–1 in the diet) and the transition metal on the presence of oxidative stress in the internal organs of growing chicks, as well as on the innate immune system status, were investigated. Supplementation with a high dose of ascorbic acid had pro-inflammatory effects on the intestinal mucosa, and lysozyme levels were decreased significantly in all organs studied. High-dose ascorbic acid caused an imbalance between prooxidative and antioxidative activities and was associated with the generation of semiquinone radicals.
