Cortisol levels and seizures in adults with epilepsy: A systematic review
2018
Stress has been suggested as a trigger factor for seizures in epilepsy patients, but little is known about cortisol levels, as indicators of stress, in adults with epilepsy. This systematic review summarizes the evidence on this topic. Following PRISMA guidelines, 38 articles were selected: 14 analyzing basal cortisol levels, eight examining antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) effects, 13 focused on seizure effects, and three examining stress. Higher basal cortisol levels were found in patients than in healthy people in studies with the most homogeneous samples (45% of 38 total studies). Despite heterogeneous results associated with AEDs, seizures were related to increases in cortisol levels in 77% …
Changes in different salivary biomarkers related to physiologic stress in elite handball players: the case of females
2019
AbstractThis study evaluates pre- and post-match concentrations of salivary cortisol, alpha-amylase (AA) and immunoglobulin A (lgA) in a group of 21 elite female handball players in the Spanish national women’s league. The players’ mean age was 23.0 ± 5.4 years. The concentration of the biomarkers was determined using ELISA. Mean playing time was 25.2 min. The players’ cortisol concentration increased significantly (p < 0.05) whereas the IgA concentration fell significantly (p < 0.01) at the end of the match. There were no significant changes in the concentrations of AA between pre and post-match timepoints. The changes observed in the study also depended on the position played; defen…
Laparoscopic-assisted Retropubic Midurethral Sling Placement: A Technique to Avoid Major Complications
2015
Abstract Study Objective To describe a technique for the safe placement of retropubic midurethral slings in patients undergoing concomitant laparoscopic surgery in order to avoid major complications associated with this procedure such as bladder perforation and retropubic hematomas. Design Step-by-step video demonstration of the technique. Setting A university tertiary care hospital. Patients Patients with an indication for retropubic midurethral sling placement because of recurrent stress urinary incontinence, intrinsic sphincter deficiency, or severe pelvic organ prolapse in whom a concomitant laparoscopic surgery has to be performed for other medical conditions. Intervention Laparoscopic…
Psychological and hormonal features of smokers at risk to gain weight after smoking cessation--results of a multicenter study.
2011
Preclinical and clinical data suggest modulating effects of appetite-regulating hormones and stress perception on food intake. Nicotine intake also interferes with regulation of body weight. Especially following smoking cessation gaining weight is a common but only partially understood consequence. The aim of this study was to examine the interaction between smoking habits, the appetite regulating hormone leptin, negative affectivity, and stress vulnerability on eating behavior in a clinical case-control study under standardized conditions. In a large population-based study sample, we compared leptin and cortisol plasma concentrations (radioimmunoassay) between current tobacco smokers with …
Endocrine and mood responses to two working days in female teachers.
2014
AbstractCurrently, a considerable amount of work stress is present in school teachers, one of the occupational groups with the highest levels of job strain and burnout. As chronic stress produces significant modifications in emotional adjustment and neuroendocrine functioning, we aimed to investigate the role of these work stress constructs in the endocrine and mood responses of a group of female teachers during two working days (WD) at different moments in the academic year. We studied mood as well as levels of cortisol and testosterone, representative of a predominant catabolic or anabolic balance. Our results showed that higher “control” was associated with higher positive mood (p = .028…
Bilateral cystic pulmonary glial heterotopia and palatinal teratoma causing respiratory distress in an infant
2009
We report on a male infant with extensive, bilateral cystic and solid lung lesions who presented postnatally with respiratory distress caused by bilateral cystic lung lesions. Parenchyma-sparing resections were performed. Histology revealed the presence of neuroglial cell-lined cysts and glial nodules. In addition, a neural element containing palatinal teratoma was detected and excised. Based on previously published cases, the pathogenesis and clinical features of pulmonary neuroglial heterotopia are discussed.
Sprint and endurance training in relation to redox balance, inflammatory status and biomarkers of aging in master athletes
2019
Purpose: Studies have shown a positive influence of intense athletic training on several biomarkers of aging, but it remains unclear whether this influence is dependent of exercise-training-mode. This study compared redox balance, cytokine levels and biomarkers of aging between master sprinters and endurance athletes, as well as in young and middle-aged individuals as controls. Methods: Participants were male master sprinters (SA, 50±8.9yrs; n=13) and endurance runners (EA, 53±8.2yrs; n=18) with remarkable athletic experience (∼25yrs of practice), besides untrained young (YC, 22.7±3.9yrs; n=17) and age-matched controls (MC, 45.5±9.8yrs; n=12). Anamnesis, anthropometrics, biomarkers of aging…
Assessment of the cytotoxic potential of an aqueous-ethanolic extract from Thalassia testudinum angiosperm marine grown in the Caribbean Sea
2018
Abstract Objectives Reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties for one aqueous-ethanolic extract from Thalassia testudinum which grows in the Caribbean Sea compelled us to explore about extract cytotoxic effects. Methods Cell viability was assayed on tumour (HepG2, PC12, Caco-2 and 4T1) and non-tumour (VERO, 3T3, CHO, MCDK and BHK2) cell lines. The extract effects upon primary cultures of rat and human hepatocytes and human lymphocytes were assayed. Key findings The extract exhibited cytotoxicity against cancer cells compared to normal cells, and the IC50 values were 102 μg/ml for HepG2, 135 μg/ml for PC12, 165 μg/ml for Caco-2 and 129 μg/ml for 4T1 cells after 4…
Assessing the risk of cytomegalovirus DNAaemia in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients by monitoring oxidative-stress markers in plasma
2017
The level of antioxidants, such as thiol-containing tripeptide glutathione (GSH), in cytomegalovirus (CMV)-infected cells is notably increased. We previously showed that GSH levels in plasma, as measured by untargeted 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, are higher in allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) recipients who subsequently develop CMV viraemia. We hypothesized that the net level of oxidative-stress markers present in plasma may be reduced in patients who develop CMV DNAaemia compared to those who do not. We serially monitored the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and carbonylated proteins (CPs) early after allo-SCT and assessed whether they could predict the occurrence of CMV DNAaemi…
