Results of chimney endovascular aneurysm repair as used in the PERICLES Registry to treat patients with suprarenal aortic pathologies

2020

Background: The prevailing evidence calls for using chimney/snorkel endovascular repair (ch-EVAR) with one or two chimney grafts. No studies up to now focus on its applicability and results for the treatment of suprarenal aortic pathologies (SRAP). Hence, we evaluated the clinical and radiologic results of ch-EVAR treatment for SRAP placing three or more chimney grafts within the PERICLES Registry. Methods: Data from 517 patients suffering complex aortic pathologies treated by ch-EVAR between 2008 and 2014 at 13 European and U.S. centers were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Results: Sixty-seven ch-EVAR-treated patients (12.9% of the entire PERICLES cohort) presented SRAP (83.5% elect…

Dystopia deconstructed: Applying the triple helix model to a failed utopia

2016

This study analyzes the failure of a literary utopian system—Veronica Roth's Divergent—drawing from difference, which the divergent and the factionless represent. The analysis of the causes and consequences of difference from a socioeconomic perspective reveals a system that the triple helix model can improve. The adapted model based on cooperation and knowledge transfer adds two connections to the three main axes: Universities (Erudite), Government (Abnegation), and Industry (Amity), and gives the divergent a key role: inter-faction coordinators. Following a review of European migration policies, the study explores the creation of a new faction for the factionless. Regarding innovation, th…

Azole-containing cationic bis-cyclometallated iridium(iii) isocyanide complexes: a theoretical insight into the emission energy and emission efficien…

2019

Using a density functional theory approach, we explore the emission properties of a family of bis-cyclometallated cationic iridium(iii) complexes of general formula [Ir(C^N)2(CN-tert-Bu)2]+ that have tert-butyl isocyanides as neutral auxiliary ligands. Taking the [Ir(ppy)2(CN-tert-Bu)2]+ complex (Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine) as a reference, the effect of replacing the pyridine ring in the cyclometallating ppy ligand by a five-membered azole ring has been examined. To this end, two series of complexes differing by the nature of the atom (either nitrogen or carbon) linking the azole to the phenyl ring of the cyclometallating ligand have been designed. Each series is composed of three molecules ha…

Phase Diagrams of Alloys and Adsorbed Monolayers: Some Recent Results

1997

We discuss some recent work done on the calculation of phase diagrams of models of binary alloys and adsorbed monolayers. For the nearest-neighbor Ising antiferromagnet on the fcc lattice (model for the Cu-Au system) we study a rather large lattice of 4 x 643 spins. This is necessary since the inherent frustration of the lattice induces a very small interfacial tension between ordered domains. We find no indications for the suggested L′ phase, and locate the triple point at a nonzero temperature. There is some numerical evidence that it might in fact be a multicritical point. We then discuss the extension of lattice gas models to “elastic lattice gases” (ELGs) which include also translation…

Photophysical properties of the triangular [Au(HNCOH)]3 complex and its dimer

2020

Rate constants for radiative and non-radiative transitions of the [Au(HNCOH)]3 complex and its dimer were calculated within the Herzberg–Teller approximation based on quantum mechanical principles. A high triplet quantum yield was estimated for the monomer. Internal conversion (IC) was found to be the major competing process to the intersystem crossing (ISC) from the lowest excited singlet state (S1) to the lowest triplet state (T1). ISC and IC from the spin-mixed 1 state also dominate the triplet relaxation process resulting in a negligible phosphorescence quantum yield for the monomer. The IC and ISC rate constants of the dimer are considerably smaller due to much lower Franck–Condon fact…

Hydrogen and helium films as model systems of wetting

1997

Optical experiments on the wetting properties of liquid 4He and molecular hydrogen are reviewed. Hydrogen films on noble metal surfaces serve as model systems for studying triple point wetting, a continuous transition between wetting and non-wetting. By means of optically excited surface plasmons, the adsorbed film thickness for temperatures around, and far below, the bulk melting temperature is measured, and the physical mechanisms responsible for the transition are elucidated. Possible applications for other experiments in pure and applied research are discussed. Thin films are droplets of liquid helium are studied on cesium surfaces, on which there is a first order wetting transition. Ou…

Strain mapping near a triple junction in strained Ni-based alloy using EBSD and biaxial nanogauges

2011

A key element for analyzing the crack initiation in strained polycrystalline alloys is the local quantification of the surface strain distribution according to the grain texture. Using electron backscattered diffraction, the local microstructure was determined to both localize a triple junction and deduce the local Schmid factors. Kernel average misorientation (KAM) was also used to map the areas of defect concentration. The maximum principal strain and the in-plane shear strain were quantified using the biaxial nanogauge. Distortions of the array of nanodots used as spot markers were analyzed near the triple junction. The crystallographic orientation and the surface strain were then invest…

Spin state, electronic structure and bonding on C-scorpionate [Fe(II)Cl2(tpm)] catalyst: An experimental and computational study

2020

Abstract The Fe(II) spin state in the condensed phase of [Fe(II)Cl2(tpm)] (tpm = [tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methane]; 1) catalyst has been determined through a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) at the FeL2,3-edges and NK-edge. Results indicated that in this phase a mixed singlet/triplet state is plausible. These results have been compared with the already know Fe singlet spin state of the same complex in water solution. A detailed analysis of the electronic structure and bonding mechanism of the catalyst showed that the preference for the low-spin diamagnetic ground state, strongly depends upon the ligands, the bulk solvent and the interactio…

Diacetylene Linked Anthracene Oligomers Synthesized by One-Shot Homocoupling of Trimethylsilyl on Cu(111)

2018

On-surface chemical reaction has become a very powerful technique to conjugate small precursor molecules and several reactions have been proposed with the aim to fabricate functional nanostructures on surfaces. Here we present an unforeseen adsorption mode of 9,10-bis-((trimethylsilyl)ethynyl)anthracene on a Cu(111)surface and the resulting one-shot desilylative homocoupling of of the adsorbate by annealing at 400 K. With a combination of high-resolution atomic force microscopy and density functional theory calculations, we found that the triple bonds and silicon atoms of the monomer chemically interact with the copper surface. After the oligomerization, we discovered that the anthracene un…
