AbstractVisceral leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum is a vector-borne zoonotic disease transmitted by sand fly bites endemic in rural or periurban areas of the Mediterranean basin. Pregnancy is accompanied by changes in immune response, mainly a decrease in cellular immunity and a proportional increase in humoral immunity. These physiological events result in increased risk of infection by pathogens whose immunity is based on a T-helper 1 predominant response. We describe a case of visceral leishmaniasis and pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed in a post-partum woman four days after delivery. Mutations in the rpoB and katG Genes Leading to Drug Resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Latvia

ABSTRACT To characterize the genetic basis of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Latvia, mutations involved in rifampin ( rpoB gene) and isoniazid ( katG gene) resistance in DNA from 19 drug-susceptible and 51 multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis complex isolates were analyzed. The most frequent rpoB gene mutations found by the Line Probe assay were the S531L (14 of 34 isolates), D516V (7 of 34), H526D (4 of 34), and D516Y plus P535S (4 of 34) mutations. Mycobacterium tuberculosis molecular evolution in western Mediterranean Island of Sicily and Sardinia

Abstract In this study, a total of 204 Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNAs from Sicily ( n = 144) and Sardinia ( n = 60) were studied by three genotyping methods. Results were analyzed both within and across islands, to define the phylogeographical specificities of the genotypes, look for their diversity and infer a molecular evolutionary scenario. A strong link between geography and tuberculosis genotypes was observed in Sardinia. The results were also matched against a world-wide genetic diversity database to compare the population structure of the tubercle bacilli in the islands. Global distribution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis spoligotypes.

Since the publication of the second version of our spoligotypes database on Mycobacterium tuberculosis (1), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), the proportion of clustered isolates (shared types [STs]) increased from 84% (2,779/3,319) to 90% (11,708/13,008). Fifty percent of the clustered isolates were found in only 20 STs. Three of these isolates are M. bovis, including M. bovis BCG (ST 481, 482, and 683). The addition of the next 30 most frequent STs increased the total proportion of clustered isolates (65% instead of 50% initially). Surveillance of bovine tuberculosis in Sicily

Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) by M. bovis is a chronic infectious disease of cattle that can represent a risk to human health. bTB European Eradication Plans are based on tuberculin testing and slaughtering of reactive subjects. Despite control measures have been applied in Italy since 1964, illness is still present in Sicily. On 2012, regional official data reported an herd infection prevalence of 3.09% and an herd incidence of 2.37%. In the same year, head prevalence was of 0.70%. This study has analyzed the results of the control activity performed on cattle farm in Sicily between 2009-2012, with the aim to evaluate the bTB prevalence and incidence.
