Innovations in Extractive Phases for In-Tube Solid-Phase Microextraction Coupled to Miniaturized Liquid Chromatography: A Critical Review
2020
Over the past years, a great effort has been devoted to the development of new sorbents that can be used to pack or to coat extractive capillaries for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME). Many of those efforts have been focused on the preparation of capillaries for miniaturized liquid chromatography (LC) due to the reduced availability of capillary columns with appropriate dimensions for this kind of system. Moreover, many of the extractive capillaries that have been used for IT-SPME so far are segments of open columns from the gas chromatography (GC) field, but the phase nature and dimensions are very limited. In particular, polar compounds barely interact with stationary GC phas…
Synthesis and characterization of nanomaterial based on halloysite and hectorite clay minerals covalently bridged
2021
Halloysite is an aluminosilicate clay with a predominantly hollow tubular structure (HNTs) able to act as a nanocontainer for the encapsulation of several chemicals. However, HNTs possess low affinity for metal ions in their pristine form and they need to be modified for improving their adsorption capabilities. Therefore, to overcome this issue herein we report a straightforward approach for the covalent modification of the external surface of halloysite nanotubes with hectorite clay. Compared to halloysite, hectorite possesses a lamellar structure with higher cation exchange capacity. The covalent linkage between the two clays was verified by several techniques (FTIR spectroscopy, 13C CP-M…
Near-Infrared Light Responsive Folate Targeted Gold Nanorods for Combined Photothermal-Chemotherapy of Osteosarcoma.
2017
Folate-targeted gold nanorods (GNRs) are proposed as selective theranostic agents for osteosarcoma treatment. An amphiphilic polysaccharide based graft-copolymer (INU-LA-PEG-FA) and an amino derivative of the α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-d,l-aspartamide functionalized with folic acid (PHEA-EDA-FA), have been synthesized to act as coating agents for GNRs. The obtained polymer-coated GNRs were characterized in terms of size, shape, zeta potential, chemical composition, and aqueous stability. They protected the anticancer drug nutlin-3 and were able to deliver it efficiently in different physiological media. The ability of the proposed systems to selectively kill tumor cells was tested on U2OS…
Exploiting the Colloidal Stability and Solubilization Ability of Clay Nanotubes/Ionic Surfactant Hybrid Nanomaterials
2012
Halloysite clay nanotubes are functionalized by exploiting the different charges between the inner positive and the outer negative surfaces; accordingly, a selective adsorption is pursued by employing anionic and cationic surfactants. The obtained hybrid materials dispersed in aqueous phase are studied from the physicochemical viewpoint to investigate the colloidal stability that is a crucial parameter for applications. It is demonstrated that the adsorption of anionic surfactant into the HNTs lumen increases the net negative charge of the nanotubes enhancing the electrostatic repulsions and consequently the dispersion stability. The solubilization capability of these functionalized nanotub…
Local photo-oxidation of individual single walled carbon nanotubes probed by femtosecond four wave mixing imaging
2014
Photo-oxidation of individual, air-suspended single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is studied by femtosecond laser spectroscopy and imaging. Individual SWCNTs are imaged by four wave mixing (FWM) microscopy under an inert gas (Ar or N2) atmosphere. When imaging is performed in an ambient air atmosphere, the decay of the FWM signal takes place. Electron microscopy shows that SWCNTs are not destroyed and the process is attributed to photoinduced oxidation reactions which proceed via a non-linear excitation mechanism, when irradiation is performed with ∼30 fs pulses in the visible spectral region (500-600 nm). Photo-oxidation can be localized in specific regions of SWCNTs within optical reso…
Optimization of the breeder zone cooling tubes of the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket
2016
Abstract The determination of an optimal configuration for the breeder zone (BZ) cooling tubes is one of the most important issues in the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) breeding blanket R&D activities, since BZ cooling tubes spatial distribution should ensure an efficient heat power removal from the breeder, avoiding hotspots occurrence in the thermal field. Within the framework of R&D activities supported by the HORIZON 2020 EUROfusion Consortium action on the DEMO WCLL breeding blanket design, a campaign of parametric analyses has been launched at the Department of Energy, Information Engineering and Mathematical Models of the University of Palermo (DEIM), in close cooperation with…
Combining Atomic Force Microscopy and Depth-Sensing Instruments for the Nanometer-Scale Mechanical Characterization of Soft Matter
2009
Complex materials exhibit a hierarchical structure where a gradient of features on nanometer scale is induced by the synthetic route eventually enhanced by the loading condition. The nanometer scale at which individual components arrange, determining their properties, is a current challenge of mechanical testing. In this work, a survey on nanoindentation is outlined based on the comparison of results obtained by Atomic Force Microscopy and Depth-Sensing Instruments and their combination. An Atomic Force Microscope equipped with a Force Transducer gives indeed the possibility to scan the sample surface in contact mode, thereby allowing one to choose a suitable position for the nanoindentatio…
Stress Transfer within CNT Fibres: A FEA Approach
2015
Abstract Carbon nanotube (CNT) fibres are characterized by extreme anisotropy in their structure and physical properties. These fibres have been shown to have high axial strength, but poor shear strength between carbon nanotubes; for this reason it is difficult to transfer stress uniformly acrossthe fibre cross section. Here, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to predict the stress distribution and the stress-strain curves of CNT fibres. The resultsdemonstrate that, in accordance with St. Venant principle, very considerable length-to-diameter ratios (> 10 3 ) are required to obtain a uniform stress distribution within the fibres even in the presence of low applied strain.
Thermo-oxidative resistant UHMWPE-based nanocomposites containing hybrid-nanoparticles based on natural anti-oxidants and carbon nanotubes
2015
The use of natural antioxidants is an attractive way to formulate nanocomposites with extended durability and with potential applications in bio-medical field. In this work, Vitamin E (VE) in the form of α-tocopherol and Quercetin (Q) were physically immobilized onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes bearing covalently-linked long-chain alkyl ester groups (CNTs) and the resulting hybrids CNTs-VE and CNTs-Q were used to formulate thermo-oxidation stable ultra high molecular weight polyethylene based nanocomposites. The thermo-oxidation of the nanocomposites was performed at 120°C in air oven. The samples were then subjected to FTIR analyses at different annealing times. The accurate analysis of …
Halloysite nanotubes: a green resource for materials and life sciences
2020
Clay minerals are considered one of the materials of the 20th century for their peculiar physico-chemical features. Among them, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are an emerging nanomaterial with a particular tubular structure that makes them a low cost and valuable alternative to the most common carbon nanotubes. Due to their tubular morphology, HNTs are employed in several fields acting as nanocontainers for different compounds for applications in drug carrier and delivery fields, catalysis, and as filler for polymeric matrices. The modification of HNTs’ surfaces allows to the synthesis of different nanoarchitectures that can improve the mechanical and thermal performance of polymer as well as …
