On-Surface Synthesis of Oligo(indenoindene)
2020
Fully conjugated ladder polymers (CLP) possess unique optical and electronic properties, and are considered promis-ing materials for applications in (opto)electronic devices. Poly(indenoindene) is a CLP consisting of an alternating array of five- and six-membered rings, which has remained elusive so far. Here, we report an on-surface synthesis of oligo(indenoindene) on Au(111). Its structure and a low elec-tronic bandgap have been elucidated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy, complemented by density functional theory calculations. Achieving defect-free seg-ments of oligo(indenoindene) offers an exclusive insight into th…
Scanning tunneling microscopy investigation of tricycloquinazoline liquid crystals on gold
2000
Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of hexaalkylthioether derivatives of tricycloquinazoline (TCQ) on Au(111) and tungsten diselenide (WSe2) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The Au(111) surfaces were found to be etched by the thioether containing solutions. Corroded surfaces which are similar to gold surfaces that were coated with SAMs of thiols or disulfides were revealed by STM. Atomic adsorption spectroscopy proved that an amount of gold that corresponds to ca. 30% of a monolayer was dissolved in the assembly solutions. On gold, the aromatic cores of the molecules were found to be in face-on orientation. The alkyl substituents were in most cases folded upwards and s…
Low-temperature specific heat of orientational glasses
1992
This review summarizes specific heat data measured at low temperatures (T<1 K) on orientational glasses. Three species of mixed molecular crystals exhibiting orientational disorder are considered, namely (KBr)1−x (KCN) x , (NaCN)1−x (KCN) x (Rb)1−x (NH4) x H2PO4. For intermediate concentrations of the anisotropic components, glass-like excitations have been observed. It is demonstrated that with respect to thermal properties, orientational disorder leads to the same “universal” behaviours than for structural disorder, i.e. a specific heat which varies below 1 K and for times 10−4 s–10 s as:C p(T,t)∞T 1×ln(t). The variation of the glass-like anomaly with compositional disorder is also discus…
Magneto-Transport Results in SAM Based MTJs
2015
This chapter is dedicated to the description of the magneto-transport results obtained in LSMO/SAM/Co magnetic tunnel nanojunctions fabricated by nanoindentation lithography technique. We started by focusing on the study of LSMO/C12P/Co MTJs. This because C12P is a medium size alkyl chain: long enough to avoid short-circuits in the junction but short enough to give a device resistance in the order of few tens of MO and thus easier to measure. Next, we started to tune the molecule thickness from C10P to C18P (from 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain to 18). This allowed on one hand to validate our system by comparing the exponential increase of the junction resistance to the one reported in t…
Surface plasmon near-field imaging of very thin microstructured polymer layers.
2004
We report on the near-field imaging of microstructured polymer layers deposited on an homogeneous metal thin film on which a surface plasmon mode is excited. The microstructures in the polymer layers are designed by electron beam lithography, and the near-field imaging is performed with a photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM). We show that, despite their very small height, the microstructures can be conveniently imaged with a PSTM thanks to the field enhancement at the surface of the metal thin film supporting the surface plasmon. The influence of the illumination conditions on the contrast of the PSTM images is discussed. In particular, we show that both the field enhancement and the…
Magneto-Transport Results in Alq3 Based OSVs
2015
The achievement of good magnetoresistance signal at room temperature is an important requirement for the possible future development of organic devices for applications. However, until now only few works reported room temperature MR effect in organic spin valves (OSVs). In this regard, this chapter is dedicated to the investigation of Alq3-based OSVs where Alq3 molecule was chosen since it is a standard material in the field. A systematic study on Co/Alq3/Co OSVs will be presented showing room temperature MR results. Moreover, inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) technique will be used to prove spin injection into the organic layer. Finally, an insulating oxide barrier (Al2O3 or…
Progress in THz Rectifier Technology: Research and Perspectives
2022
Schottky diode (SD) has seen great improvements in the past few decades and, for many THz applications, it is the most useful device. However, the use and recycling of forms of energy such as solar energy and the infrared thermal radiation that the Earth continuously emits represent one of the most relevant and critical issues for this diode, which is unable to rectify signals above 5 THz. The goal is to develop highly efficient diodes capable of converting radiation from IR spectra to visible ones in direct current (DC). A set of performance criteria is investigated to select some of the most prominent materials required for developing innovative types of electrodes, but also a wide variet…
Flat bands and strongly correlated Fermi systems
2019
Many strongly correlated Fermi systems including heavy-fermion (HF) metals and high-Tc superconductors belong to that class of quantum many-body systems for which Landau Fermiliquid (LFL) theory fails. Instead, these systems exhibit non-Fermi-liquid properties that arise from violation of time-reversal (T) and particle-hole (C) invariance. Measurements of tunneling conductance provide a powerful experimental tool for detecting violations of these basic symmetries inherent to LFLs, which guarantee that the measured differential conductivity dI/dV, where I is the current and V the bias voltage, is a symmetric function of V. Thus, it has been predicted that the conductivity becomes asymmetric …
Oxidation-Induced Changes in the ALD-Al2O3/InAs(100) Interface and Control of the Changes for Device Processing
2018
InAs crystals are emerging materials for various devices like radio frequency transistors and infrared sensors. Control of oxidation-induced changes is essential for decreasing amounts of the harmful InAs surface (or interface) defects because it is hard to avoid the energetically favored oxidation of InAs surface parts in device processing. We have characterized atomic-layer-deposition (ALD) grown Al2O3/InAs interfaces, preoxidized differently, with synchrotron hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES), low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis. The chemical environment and core-level shifts are clarified for w…
A Computational Study of Adsorption of CO2, SO2, and H2CO on Free-Standing and Molybdenum-Supported CaO Films
2018
Oxide films play a significant role in a wide range of fields from catalysis to solar cell materials. CaO films are promising sorbents for many environmentally harmful molecules. Here, we report a systematic investigation of adsorption of CO2, SO2, and H2CO on bulk and Mo-supported CaO(100) films using density functional theory. Significant effects on adsorption energy, charge transfer to the molecules, and degree of the C–O bond activation were demonstrated on Mo-supported CaO films by changing the film thickness, composition, and the strength and direction of an applied external electric field. These findings are relevant for interpreting results from scanning tunneling microscopy of smal…
