Collective and self diffusion of PS microgels in solution as observed by thermal diffusion forced Rayleigh scattering

Thermal diffusion in solutions of polystyrene micro-network spheres (microgels) in toluene has been studied by the holographic scattering technique of thermal diffusion forced Rayleigh scattering (TDFRS) and by photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). Size distributions of microgels of different crosslink ratios are obtained from TDFRS measurements on dilute solutions at very low q-values around 4000cm−1. At low concentrations a single diffusive mode is observed and the diffusion coefficient increases with concentration. It is attributed to the collective diffusion of the microgels and the solvent. Self-diffusion coefficients of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (TIB) in binary solutions with polystyrene and ternary mixtures comprised of TIB, toluene, and polystyrene have been measured by static gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (SG-NMR) techniques. These data, as well as mutual-diffusion coefficient data measured by capillary column inverse gas chromatography (CCIGC), have been analyzed here with the Vrentas-Duda free-volume diffusion model. Although both binary and ternary diffusion coefficient data can be accurately correlated with the model, the results contradict those of an earlier investigation, which suggested that TIB diffuses as a single unit in polystyrene solutions. Attenuation of NF-κB Signaling Response to UVB Light during Cellular Senescence

The ability of cells to adapt to environmental stresses undergoes a progressive reduction during aging. NF-kappaB-mediated signaling is a major defensive system against various environmental challenges. The aim of this study was to find out whether replicative senescence affects the response of the NF-kappaB signaling pathway to UVB light in human WI-38 and IMR-90 fibroblasts. The exposure of early passage fibroblasts to UVB light inhibited the proliferation and induced a flat phenotype similar to that observed in replicatively senescent fibroblasts not exposed to UVB light. Imbalance between sympathetic and sensory innervation in peritoneal endometriosis

To investigate possible mechanisms of pain pathophysiology in patients with peritoneal endometriosis, a clinical study on sensory and sympathetic nerve fibre sprouting in endometriosis was performed. Peritoneal lesions (n= 40) and healthy peritoneum (n= 12) were immunostained and analysed with anti-protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5), anti-substance P (SP) and anti-tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), specific markers for intact nerve fibres, sensory nerve fibres and sympathetic nerve fibres, respectively, to identify the ratio of sympathetic and sensory nerve fibres. Sepiapterin reductase in cultured human cells.

Sepiapterin reductase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of tetrahydrobiopterin (the natural cofactor for phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan hydroxylases), has been assayed in cultured human amniotic fibroblasts and in cultured mononuclear blood cells. In both cases, the Michaelis constants for sepiapterin and NADPH were essentially equal; 20 microM and 6 microM respectively for stimulated mononuclear blood cells and 22 microM and 5 microM respectively for amniotic fibroblasts. Yeast vectors for the integration/expression of any sequence at theTYR1 locus

We have constructed new yeast vectors for targeted integration and conditional expression of any sequence at the Saccharomyces cerevisiae TYR1 locus which becomes disrupted. We show that vector integration is not neutral, causing prototrophy for tyrosine and auxotrophy for the vector's selectable marker (uracil or leucine, depending on the vector used). This feature allows a double screening of transformed yeast cells, improving the identification of colonies with the desired chromosomal structure. The nucleotide and partial amino acid sequences of rat fetuin. Identity with the natural tyrosine kinase inhibitor of the rat insulin receptor.

Fetuins are among the major plasma proteins, yet their biological role has remained elusive. Here we report the molecular cloning of rat fetuin and the sequence analysis of a full-length clone, RF619 of 1456 bp with an open reading frame of 1056 bp encoding 352 amino acid residues. The coding part of RF619 was identical with the cDNA sequence of the natural inhibitor of the insulin receptor tyrosine kinase from rat (pp63) except for four substitutions and a single base insertion causing divergence of the predicted protein sequences. Minireview: Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors on Hippocampal Neurons: Distribution on the Neuronal Surface and Modulation of Receptor Activity

The recent development of a technique that uses infrared microscopy for the visualization of well-defined areas on the surface of neurons, and a computerized system of micromanipulators led to the discovery that functional nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are expressed at higher density on the dendrites than on the soma of rat hippocampal neurons. The finding that the expression of alpha-bungarotoxin-sensitive, alpha 7-bearing, nAChRs and dihydro-beta-erythroidine-sensitive, alpha 4 beta 2 nAChRs tends to increase along the dendritic length suggests that these receptors may be highly involved in the integration of synaptic functions in hippocampal neurons.
