Interfacial tension of demixed polymer solutions: augmentation by polymer additives

1997

The interfacial tension between phase separated polymer solutions increases pronouncedly upon the addition of asmall amounts of incompatible polymers. This feature is demonstrated by means of measurements with solutions of polystyrene in cyclohexane and the folloowing additives: poly(styrene-block-dimethylsiloxane), polyisobutylene and polydimethylsiloxane. Theoretical considerations based on a correlation between the lenth of the tie lines and the corresponding interfacial tension corroborates this finding

Phenylalanine hydroxylase from the sponge Geodia cydonium: implication for allorecognition and evolution of aromatic amino acid HYDROXYLASESfn1fn1The…

1998

Abstract The prophenoloxidase activating system is a defense system, frequently reported both in protostomes and in deuterostomes. The final product of the phenoloxidase activity is melanin which is ubiquitously present throughout the metazoan kingdom. The melanin synthesis pathway starts with the amino acid [aa] phenylalanine which is converted to tyrosine by the phenylalanine hydroxylase [PAH]. We show that after allo-transplantation in the marine sponge Geodiacydonium PAH is upregulated in the grafts. Enzyme determination studies revealed that PAH activity increases by three-fold two d after transplantation and reaches its maximum after 3 d (by 3.7-fold). This finding was supported by de…

Modification of commercial UF membranes by electrospray deposition of polymers for tailoring physicochemical properties and enhancing filtration perf…

2020

Abstract The main challenge for a widespread use of nanoporous membranes in the removal of ionic contaminants lies in the adjustment of their physicochemical properties to allow adequate ion rejection and mitigate fouling based on the targeted application. Most of the commercial membranes are negatively charged and their use is thus not necessarily relevant for divalent cation rejection. The main objective for researchers is therefore to provide novel tailored membranes by developing specific synthesis or modifying available membranes. It is proposed here to tailor physicochemical properties of a commercial low molecular weight cut-off ultrafiltration membrane by electrospray deposition of …

An investigation on using pre-treated tyre rubber as a replacement of synthetic polymers for bitumen modification

2015

Rubberized bitumen obtained through a swelling process, has widely proven to be a successful technology for asphalt pavement applications and a solution to reduce the dismantling of tyre rubber on landfills. However, this technology presents two main operative issues which needs the adoption of costly special equipment. Firstly, significant high value of High Temperature Viscosity (HTV) which imposes mixing and compaction difficulties and leads to increased energy consumption and emissions. Furthermore, during the hot storage period, phase separation between rubber particles and the base bitumen could occur. Developing Recycled Tyre Rubber Modified Bitumen (RTR-MBs) with improved storage st…

Chapter 17: The cholinesterases: a discussion of some unanswered questions

1993

Publisher Summary During the past three decades, a vast body of specificity and kinetic data relating to the cholinesterases has accumulated, which must now be explained by the extremely interesting new sequence and X-ray crystallographic results presented by MassouliC et al. As this chapter shows, the cholinesterases are remarkable among enzymes in having a broad specificity embracing both charged and uncharged substrates but with a clearly expressed preference, at any rate in the aliphatic series, for the acylcholine configuration: a classical example of the principle of complementariness between substrate and active site as the basis for enzyme action. It is well known that AChE exists i…

Mechanisms of photosensitization by drugs: Involvement of tyrosines in the photomodification of proteins mediated by tiaprofenic acid in vitro

1997

The photosensitizing potential of drugs must be related to their photoreactivity towards the target biomolecules. In this context, a representative photosensitizing drug (tiaprofenic acid) was co-irradiated with a model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA). This led to a significant degree of protein crosslinking and to the formation of trace amounts of drug-BSA photoadducts. Amino acid analysis of the hydrolysed (HC1) protein showed that His and Tyr undergo a dramatic decrease (approx. 90%) as a consequence of drug-mediated photodynamic processes. When the drug was irradiated in the presence of the pure amino acids, extensive phototransformation of the latter was observed. Other photosensit…

Copper Proteins with Dinuclear Active SitesBased in part on the article Copper Proteins with Dinuclear Active Sites by Konrad Lerch which appeared in…

2006

Copper proteins with dinuclear active sites comprise proteins with different structures and functions. The phenoloxidase, tyrosinase, and catecholoxidase are responsible for browning by starting the synthesis of melanin. These enzymes are involved in the primary immune response in invertebrates, plants, fungi as well as in the sclerotization of arthropods. The respiratory proteins hemocyanins are responsible for oxygen transport in some arthropods and molluscs. However, they can be converted to enzymes exhibiting phenoloxidase activity. Based on X-ray structures of hemocyanins and a catecholoxidase, large parts of folding motifs are very similar although the sequence identities are far belo…

Biochemical Characterization of an Acetylcholine-hydrolyzing Enzyme from Bean Seedlings.

1980

An acetylcholine hydrolyzing enzyme was prepared and purified (40 times) from dwarf bean hypocotyl hooks. The purity of the enzyme was proved by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The molecular weight of the enzyme was determined to be 65,000 daltons. Enzyme activity was the highest at pH 8.0 and between 30 and 36 C. The enzyme had an apparent affinity constant (K(m)) for acetylcholine of 460/micromolar. The affinity for substrate analogs increased from butyrylthiocholine to propionylthiocholine to acetylthiocholine. The enzyme activity was inhibited by choline, neostigmine, physostigmine, manganese, and calcium. Magnesium had no influence on the enzyme activity. We conclude that the enzym…
