Parallel Random Search and Tabu Search for the Minimal Consistent Subset Selection Problem

1998

The Minimal Consistent Subset Selection (MCSS) problem is a discrete optimization problem whose resolution for large scale instances requires a prohibitive processing time. Prior algorithms addressing this problem are presented. Randomization and approximation techniques are suitable to face the problem, then random search and meta-heuristics are proposed and consequently Tabu Search strategies are applied and evaluated. Parallel computing helps to reduce processing time and/or produce better results; different approaches for designing parallel tabu search are analyzed.

Long-term results after operative treatment of femoral neck fractures with ceramic head prostheses.

2001

ABSTRACT From 1 985-1 990, a total of 277 elderly patients underwent hemiarthroplasty using a ceramic head prosthesis. Average patient age was 81.7 years. Of these, 77 patients were available for follow-up examination in 1993. A standardized score was calculated assessing activity, gait, and hip pain; the average score was 58 out of 78 possible points. Three patients had hip pain, and in 4 patients, radiographic examination revealed protrusio acetabuli. Two of 4 patients underwent revision surgery for replacement of the cup, leaving the stem in situ. Because of the small number of prosthetic-related complications, hemiarthroplasty using a ceramic head prosthesis is the recommended surgical …

A Chromogenic Probe for the Selective Recognition of Sarin and Soman Mimic DFP

2014

The synthesis, characterization and sensing features of a novel probe 1 for the selective chromogenic recognition of diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP), a sarin and soman mimic, in 99:1 (v/ v) water/acetonitrile and in the gas phase is reported. Colour modulation is based on the combined reaction of phosphorylation of 1 and fluoride-induced hydrolysis of a silyl ether moiety. As fluoride is a specific reaction product of the reaction between DFP and the OH group, the probe shows a selective colour modulation in the presence of this chemical. Other nerve agent simulants, certain anions, oxidant species and other organophosphorous compounds were unable to induce colour changes in 1. This is one…

In vitro and in vivo efficacy of PEGylated diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase)

2011

Highly toxic organophosphorus compounds that irreversibly inhibit the enzyme acetycholinesterase (AChE), including nerve agents like tabun, sarin, or soman, still pose a credible threat to civilian populations and military personnel. New therapeutics that can be used as a pretreatment or after poisoning with these compounds, complementing existing treatment schemes such as the use of atropine and AChE reactivating oximes, are currently the subject of intense research. A prominent role among potential candidates is taken by enzymes that can detoxify nerve agents by hydrolysis. Diisopropyl fluorophosphatase (DFPase) from the squid Loligo vulgaris is known to effectively hydrolyze DFP and the …

Design and implementation of a course scheduling system using Tabu Search

2002

Abstract Building a course timetable is a difficult and lengthy task which universities devote a large amount of human and material resources to every year. We have developed a computer package to solve this problem. The program runs on a PC and the user may set the objectives and parameters from among a wide range of possibilities. It has a user-friendly interface for the user to input the relevant data and obtain the corresponding results. The optimization process is based on a set of heuristic algorithms. The core is a Tabu Search procedure for which several strategies have been developed and tested in order to get a fast and powerful algorithm. The first tests of the package have produc…

Fast solution of radial distribution networks with automated compensation and reconfiguration

2000

Abstract Optimal operation of radial distribution networks with automated compensation and reconfiguration requires the solution of a combinatorial optimisation problem, since the variables are the on/off status of capacitor banks and the open/close status of tie-switches. The solution approaches recently proposed use iterative algorithms such as genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and tabu search, for which the network needs to be solved in different configurations and at different compensation levels. The aim of this evaluation is that of attributing a quality index to each solution so that all the solutions can be suitably ordered. In an automated network, any configuration can be ob…

A New Metaheuristic for the Vehicle Routing Problem with Split Demands

2007

In this paper we present a metaheuristic procedure constructed for the special case of the Vehicle Routing Problem in which the demands of the clients can be split, i.e., any client can be serviced by more than one vehicle. The proposed algorithm, based on the scatter search methodology, produces a feasible solution using the minimum number of vehicles. The results obtained compare with the best results known up to date on a set of instances previously published in the literature.

Scatter Search and Path-Relinking: Fundamentals, Advances, and Applications

2010

Scatter search is an evolutionary metaheuristic that explores solution spaces by evolving a set of reference points, operating on a small set of solutions while making only limited use of randomization. We give a comprehensive description of the elements and methods that make up its template, including the most recent elements incorporated in successful applications in both global and combinatorial optimization. Path-relinking is an intensification strategy to explore trajectories connecting elite solutions obtained by heuristic methods such as scatter search, tabu search, and GRASP. We describe its mechanics, implementation issues, randomization, the use of pools of high-quality solutions …

Ocean acidification bends the mermaid's wineglass

2015

Ocean acidification lowers the saturation state of calcium carbonate, decreasing net calcification and compromising the skeletons of organisms such as corals, molluscs and algae. These calcified structures can protect organisms from predation and improve access to light, nutrients and dispersive currents. While some species (such as urchins, corals and mussels) survive with decreased calcification, they can suffer from inferior mechanical performance. Here, we used cantilever beam theory to test the hypothesis that decreased calcification would impair the mechanical performance of the green alga Acetabularia acetabulum along a CO 2 gradient created by volcanic seeps off Vulcano, Italy. Cal…
