Hormonal changes of intimate partner violence perpetrators in response to brief social contact with women
2022
This study investigated whether men with a history of real-life aggressive, dominant behavior show increases in testosterone and cortisol levels after brief social contact with women. Furthermore, we tested the prediction that such changes in hormones would be larger than those observed previously in young male students. Sixty-seven male participants convicted of intimate partner violence (IPV) either had brief social contact with a female confederate (experimental condition) or a male confederate (control condition). We also performed meta-analyses to investigate whether IPV perpetrators' hormonal responses were larger than the typical responses of young male students in prior studies. All…
Obstacles to intergroup contact: When outgroup partner's anxiety meets perceived ethnic discrimination
2013
Emerging research suggests that outgroup partner's anxiety can disrupt intergroup rapport-building. This study extends previous findings by investigating the interactive effects of anticipated outgroup partner's anxiety and perceived ethnic discrimination on self-anxiety and intergroup contact avoidance. A sample of immigrant adolescents belonging to different ethnic minorities in Italy (N = 118) was considered. Results showed that when participants expected to interact with an anxious outgroup (Italian) versus in-group partner, self-anxiety increased and, as a consequence, their intentions to avoid future encounters. However, these effects were observed only for participants with higher (v…
Contact sensitivity to oxazolone in the chicken: evidence for Arthus type hypersensitivity of the cutaneous reaction.
1992
Cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction can be induced in chickens by skin painting with oxazolone, 33 mg/Kg of body weight (KBW). The B cell contribution to the generation of the cutaneous reaction has been a matter of controversy. In an attempt to characterize this reaction we placed special interest on the possibility that the nature of this reaction could be Arthus type hypersensitivity. From the kinetics study on the cutaneous hypersensitivity after challenge with oxazolonated egg-albumin (EA-OX) it was excluded that the nature of this reaction could be delayed type hypersensitivity. Immune sera transfer experiments demonstrated that the cutaneous reaction was antibody dependent. Serum ant…
Increased Level of Intracellular MHC Class II Molecules in Murine Langerhans Cells Following In Vivo and In Vitro Administration of Contact Allergens
1992
Treatment of murine Langerhans cells (LC) with contact allergens results in increased internalization of cell membrane constituents and therefore in depressed cell-surface expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules during the first hours after haptenization. In this presentation we show that this downregulation of cell-surface-expressed Ia-antigens is accompanied by an augmentation of the intracellular pool of MHC class II molecules. Rat MoAb 2G9 was developed, which recognizes IA and IE molecules of the d-haplotype. This MoAb competes with the murine MoAb MK-D6 for binding sites to IAd-molecules. After blocking the cell-surface-expressed molecules with 2G9 and …
Evidence of beat perception via purely tactile stimulation
2008
Humans can easily tap in synchrony with an auditory beat but not with an equivalent visual rhythmic sequence, suggesting that the sensation of meter (i.e. of an underlying regular pulse) may be inherently auditory. We assessed whether the perception of meter could also be felt with tactile sensory inputs. We found that, when participants were presented with identical rhythmic sequences filled with either short tones or hand stimulations, they could more efficiently tap in synchrony with strongly rather than weakly metric sequences. These observations suggest that non-musician adults can extract the metric structure of purely tactile rhythms and use it to tap regularly with the beat induced …
Three cell subsets are required for the transfer of delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction by antigen-specific T cell lines.
1997
Antigen (trinitrochlorobenzene)-specific T cell lines were obtained by repeated stimulation of lymph node cells from immune mice with antigen in vitro. These T cell lines, consisting of more than 90% CD4+ Vbeta8.2+ and 6 to 9% gammadelta+ T lymphocytes, transfer contact sensitivity (CS) locally when injected at the same site as the challenge antigen, but fail to mediate a systemic passive transfer when injected i.v. Injection of T cell lines together with spleen cells from mice immunized 1 day beforehand (1-day cells) allowed a successful, specific systemic transfer of CS. Phenotypic analysis showed that the 1-day immune cell was alphabeta+, gammadelta-, sIg-, CD3+, CD4-, CD8-, CD5+, B220 (…
Visual quality with corneo-scleral contact lenses after intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation for keratoconus management
2019
Purpose: To evaluate the visual quality results when fitting a corneo-scleral contact lens (CScL) after intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation for keratoconus management. Methods: Twenty-seven eyes of 27 patients with keratoconus underwent ICRS implantation and had CScL fitted as their visual quality was unsatisfactory with their spectacles or contact lenses. Patients received a complete eye examination, refraction and visual acuity assessment, anterior eye biomicroscopy, ocular fundus examination, corneal topographic analysis, endothelial-cell count, and visual quality assessment using contrast sensitivity and aberrometry tests. A diagnostic trial set was used in the fitting process…
Validation of the Beliefs about Children's Adjustment in Same-Sex Families Scale in Italian University Students.
2019
Assessing attitudes toward same-sex parenting has important implications for both intervention and prevention programs designed to foster the tolerance and normality of sexual and family diversity. Few empirically validated measures of rejection of same-sex parenting have been developed. The current study examined the psychometric properties of an Italian translation of the Beliefs about Children's Adjustment in Same-Sex Families Scale, a 14-item scale distributed in two subscales that measure direct and subtle rejection toward same-sex parenting, for its use in assessing heterosexual people's attitudes toward same-sex parents in Italy. The sample consisted of 344 Italian heterosexual unive…
Males influence maternal effects that promote sexual selection: a quantitative genetic experiment with dung beetles Onthophagus taurus
2003
J.S.K. was funded by the Academy of Finland, L.W.S. by the Australian Research Council, J.H. by an Australian Postgraduate Award, and J.L.T. by a postdoctoral research fellowship from the University of Western Australia. Recently, doubt has been cast on studies supporting good genes sexual selection by the suggestion that observed genetic benefits for offspring may be confounded by differential maternal allocation. In traditional analyses, observed genetic sire effects on offspring phenotype may result from females allocating more resources to the offspring of attractive males. However, maternal effects such as differential allocation may represent a mechanism promoting genetic sire effects…
Reactogenicity and Immunogenicity at Preschool Age of a Booster Dose of Two Three-Component Diphtheria-Tetanus-Acellular Pertussis Vaccines in Childr…
2001
Objectives. To determine the reactogenicity and immunogenicity of a fourth dose of 2 three-component acellular pertussis vaccines combined with diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) when administered at preschool age to children primed in infancy with 3 doses of the same DTaP and who had received a diphtheria-tetanus (DT) dose at the age of 12 months.Setting.Local health units of 4 Italian regions.Study Design.Three thousand five hundred twenty-two children, who had been randomized in the first year of life to be immunized with a DTaP vaccine by either SmithKline Beecham or Chiron Biocine, were offered a booster of the same vaccine or, if refusing, a DT vaccine at the age of 5 to 6 y…
