The quantum phase slip phenomenon in superconducting nanowires with a low-Ohmic environment
2012
In a number of recent experiments it has been demonstrated that in ultra-narrow superconducting channels quantum fluctuations of the order parameter, alternatively called quantum phase slips, are responsible for the finite resistance well below the critical temperature. The acceptable agreement between those experiments and the models describing quantum fluctuations in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors has been established. However the very concept of the phase slip is justified when these fluctuations are the relatively rare events, meaning that the effective resistance of the system should be much smaller than the normal state equivalent. In this paper we study the limit of the strong…
Sympathetic neurons can produce and respond to interleukin 6
1998
Neuronal expression of cytokines is an area of active investigation in the contexts of development, disease, and normal neural function. Although cultured rat sympathetic neurons respond very weakly to exogenous interleukin 6 (IL-6), we find that addition of soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) and IL-6 enhances neuronal survival in the absence of nerve growth factor. Neutralizing monoclonal antibodies against IL-6 block these effects. Addition of IL-6 and sIL-6R also induces a subset of neuropeptide and transmitter synthetic enzyme mRNAs identical to that demonstrated for leukemia inhibitory factor, ciliary neurotrophic factor, and oncostatin M. Both of these effects are duplicated by addition o…
Does Young's equation hold on the nanoscale? A Monte Carlo test for the binary Lennard-Jones fluid
2010
When a phase-separated binary ($A+B$) mixture is exposed to a wall, that preferentially attracts one of the components, interfaces between A-rich and B-rich domains in general meet the wall making a contact angle $\theta$. Young's equation describes this angle in terms of a balance between the $A-B$ interfacial tension $\gamma_{AB}$ and the surface tensions $\gamma_{wA}$, $\gamma_{wB}$ between, respectively, the $A$- and $B$-rich phases and the wall, $\gamma _{AB} \cos \theta =\gamma_{wA}-\gamma_{wB}$. By Monte Carlo simulations of bridges, formed by one of the components in a binary Lennard-Jones liquid, connecting the two walls of a nanoscopic slit pore, $\theta$ is estimated from the inc…
Improving surface detection on nanoindentation of compliant materials
2010
Nanoindentation is a versatile tool for monitoring mechanical properties on a local scale. Accurate knowledge of a contact area, and therefore an initial contact, is however necessary for translating the force curve into sample mechanical properties. It is shown that methods for sensing an initial contact by depth sensing instruments (DSI) may be severely in error for compliant materials. With the hardware adopted in this work, the threshold is determined by the elastic modulus; hence the error potentially increases if the material becomes more compliant. A simple method is therefore suggested to determine with accuracy the initial contact on compliant materials whereby the surface contact …
The alignment of head nods with syntactic units in Finnish Sign Language and Swedish Sign Language
2016
In this paper we examine the relationship between specific head movement events – head nods, often treated as prosodic boundary markers – and syntactic units in Finnish (FinSL) and Swedish Sign Language (SSL). In the study we investigated the alignment of head nods with syntactic units on the basis of a total of 20 (10+10) FinSL and SSL narratives. The results of the study show that in both languages head nods appeared similarly on syntactic boundaries and that the tendency was to align nods sentence-finally. However, not all head nods behaved this way: for example, a relatively large number of head nods were also found to occur sentence-initially or elsewhere in the sentence. Furthermore, …
Calls of the Jungle Crow (Corvus macrorhynchos s.l.) as a taxonomic character
2000
A discriminant analysis of the call structure completely separates threeCorvus taxa (levaillantii andjaponensis of the ‘macrorhynchos group’,splendens) inhabiting the southern slopes of the Himalayas (Nepal, Kashmir). The acoustic differences are considered taxonomically relevant, indicating species boundaries. Therefore the Jungle Crows of lower and upper Nepal (contact zone at around 2,000 m) are assigned to two biospecies (C. japonensis andC. levaillantii), as is consistent with morphological, ecological and parasitological data. It appears possible to extrapolate the findings regarding call structure to the systematics of other ‘macrorhynchos’ populations as distant as the Russian Far E…
Humectabilidad In-Vivo E In-Vitro En Diferentes Materiales De Lentes De Contacto Y Calidad De La Película Lagrimal
2023
Lack of effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids on locomotor activity in intact male mice.
1999
Anabolic-androgenic steroid abusers have reported hyperactivity euphoria, and decreased fatigue, among other behavioral effects. It has been suggested that the effects of these substances on the central nervous system are similar to those of psychostimulants; however, the influence of steroids on general locomotor activity in laboratory animals is not well understood, especially how noncastrated male rodents are affected. In this study, spontaneous locomotor activity displayed by gonadally intact male mice submitted to several experimental conditions was analyzed. Different housing conditions (individual or cohabiting with a female), diverse steroids (testosterone propionate, nandrolone de…
Dependence of thermal conductivity on structural parameters in porous samples
2012
The in-plane thermal conductivity of porous sintered bronze plates was studied both experimentally and numerically. We developed and validated an experimental setup, where the sample was placed in vacuum and heated while its time-dependent temperature field was measured with an infrared camera. The porosity and detailed three-dimensional structure of the samples were determined by X-ray microtomography. Lattice-Boltzmann simulations of thermal conductivity in the tomographic reconstructions of the samples were used to correct the contact area between bronze particles as determined by image analysis from the tomographic reconstructions. Small openings in the apparent contacts could not be de…
