In the wake of the Mesozoic, the Early Triassic (~251.95 Ma) corresponds to the aftermath of the most severe mass extinction of the Phanerozoic: the end-Permian crisis, when life was nearly obliterated (e.g., 90% of marine species disappeared). Consequences of this mass extinction are thought to have prevailed for several millions of years, implying a delayed recovery lasting the whole Early Triassic, if not more. Several paradigms have been established and associated to a delayed biotic recovery scenario expected to have resulted from harsh and deleterious paleoenvironments. Pyrocoll, an Antibiotic, Antiparasitic and Antitumor Compound Produced by a Novel Alkaliphilic Streptomyces Strain

A new secondary metabolite was detected in the culture extract of Streptomyces sp. AK 409 by HPLC-diode-array screening. The metabolite was identified as pyrocoll, which is known to be a constituent of cigarette smoke. Pyrocoll is known as a synthetic compound, but until now had not been isolated as a natural product from a microorganism. The compound showed biological activity against various Arthrobacter strains, filamentous fungi, several pathogenic protozoa, and some human tumor cell lines.

Scientific analysis were undertaken within a research project concerning ivory objects from the Chalcolithic to Early Bronze Age of the Iberian Peninsula. In several of the analyses of objects from Portuguese Estremadura, especially V-perforated buttons, we could detect for the first time the presence of sperm whale ivory. This highlights the advantage and necessity of scientific analysis of ivory. It also clearly demonstrates that not all ivory used was ivory from African or Asian elephants, but we also did find ivory from the extinct Elephas antiquus, the hippopotamus and in this case sperm-whale. Los objetivos de este estudio son: a) Describir los sucesos vitales y tensiones que afectan a los padres con hijos adolescentes, y b) Verificar las posibles diferencias en la descripción de estos sucesos por parte de los padres en función de la edad del hijo adolescente mayor: mayor o menor de 19 años. A tal fin, una muestra de 386 padres (193 matrimonios) de hijos adolescentes fueron evaluados a partir del FILE (Hernández Córdoba 1991). Background One of the greatest challenges that dentists face today is to rehabilitate severe atrophied alveolar ridges in partially and completely edentulous patients with implants.
