Defectus natalium.
2016
According to the canon law of the first half of the XIIth century, sons of priests and canons are not allowed to be promoted to sacred orders nor to succeed to their fathers. Yet the merita and the morum honestas of the sons can compensate for the vitia of the fathers. That explains that papal dispensations super defectu natalium are very common a long time before Boniface VIII (1295-1303) resolves the jurisdictional issue of who may grant a dispensation (pope, bishops or abbots) and for which cases (major or minor orders). Letters and letter formularies of the Apostolic Penitentiary – a papal office which arises at the beginning of the XIIIth century, answers to the supplications addressed…
Tardigrades of Finland: new records and an annotated checklist
2020
Species checklists are powerful and important tools of communication between taxonomists and applied environmental biologists, which in turn lead to well-planned and successful conservation strategies and ecological studies. Despite this, only recently the interest on compiling systematic checklists is growing among taxonomists who study tardigrades—micrometazoans that inhabit almost every habitat worldwide. As the Finnish records of tardigrades (a.k.a. water bears) species are incomplete, outdated and no checklist has ever been compiled for this country, an easy-to-consult checklist is here reported. This checklist covers all Finnish tardigrade taxa identified in the past and in the 13 sam…
Static and dynamic policies with RFID for the scheduling of retrieval and storage warehouse operations
2013
Warehouses are essential components of logistics and supply chains. The performance of warehouse operations significantly affects the efficiency of the whole chain it belongs to. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an emerging technology capable of providing real-time information about the location and properties of tagged object(s), such as people, equipment or products. The objective of this article is threefold, to propose and compare different offline and online policies for the scheduling of warehouse operations, to design a tool that allows the decision maker to compare policies and environments without putting them into practice, and to study the benefits that can be obtained if…
2014
This paper presents a mathematical model for robust production planning. The model helps fashion apparel suppliers in making decisions concerning allocation of production orders to different production plants characterized by different lead times and production costs, and in proper time scheduling and sequencing of these production orders. The model aims at optimizing these decisions concerning objectives of minimal production costs and minimal tardiness. It considers several factors such as the stochastic nature of customer demand, differences in production and transport costs and transport times between production plants in different regions. Finally, the model is applied to a case study.…
EST sequencing of Onychophora and phylogenomic analysis of Metazoa
2007
Onychophora (velvet worms) represent a small animal taxon considered to be related to Euarthropoda. We have obtained 1873 5' cDNA sequences (expressed sequence tags, ESTs) from the velvet worm Epiperipatus sp., which were assembled into 833 contigs. BLAST similarity searches revealed that 51.9% of the contigs had matches in the protein databases with expectation values lower than 10(-4). Most ESTs had the best hit with proteins from either Chordata or Arthropoda (approximately 40% respectively). The ESTs included sequences of 27 ribosomal proteins. The orthologous sequences from 28 other species of a broad range of phyla were obtained from the databases, including other EST projects. A conc…
2020
A necropolis at Baudemont (Saône-et-Loire) that was partially excavated in 1894 has revealed approximately fifteen graves datable to the end of the 4th and 5th centuries ad. Others seem to have been emptied during the first half of the 19th century. The discovery of a negative of the objects collected in 1894 indicates the pieces originating in the danubian area, which probably reflects the presence of a group of eastern Germans among those buried in the necropolis. These discoveries offer new perspectives on the Gallic context during the 5th century.
Les " mausolées " de Salone et de Split
2012
Although abbot Martin is supposed to have collected and brought it all to Rome, as pope John IV had asked him to, the relics of salonitan martyrs are venerated since the Early Middle Ages in Split cathedral, settled in the octagon of Diocletian’s Palace, in the ager of Salona, former capital of Roman Dalmatia. Both main martyrs of the ancient city, first bishop Domnio and Anastasius fullonicus, are the medieval patrons of the cathedral beside Virgin Mary. Anastasius had previously been buried in a private mausoleum on the necropolis of Marusinac - mausoleum which gave birth to a pilgrimage ecclesial complex including a basilica gemina. Having first looked for graves ad sanctos at Manastirin…
