An interdisciplinary and multi-institutional group of science and art conservation specialists has provided new insight into the painting materials used in the polychrome walls and wooden ceilings in four seventeenth century Spanish colonial churches of Nueva Vizcaya (Chihuahua, Mexico). A multi-analytical study of the decorative surfaces was performed in situ using spectroscopic approaches (XRF, FORS), False Colour Infrared Reflectography – IRFC, as well as micro sampling for ATR-FTIR, LM and GC/MS laboratory analyses. International audience; Cet article part de l'absence de débat sur la politique culturelle au cours de la campagne électorale des élections présidentielles et législatives du printemps 2002. Il montre les ressorts de cette atonie, avant d'expliquer le réflexe anti-fasciste qui marque les semaines qui suivent le premier tour des présidentielles et la présence de Jean-Marie Le Pen au second tour. L'analyse de la défaite du candidat socialiste est aussi un moment de remise en cause du modèle français de politique culturelle. Le débat s'estompe vite et ne débouche pas sur la mise en place d'une politique culturelle 'refondée'.

Abstract Properties of porous materials, abundant both in nature and industry, have broad influences on societies via, e.g. oil recovery, erosion, and propagation of pollutants. The internal structure of many porous materials involves multiple scales which hinders research on the relation between structure and transport properties: typically laboratory experiments cannot distinguish contributions from individual scales while computer simulations cannot capture multiple scales due to limited capabilities. Study of the average charge states of 188Pb and 252,254No ions at the gas-filled separator TASCA

The average charge states of Pb-188 and No-252,No-254 ions in dilute helium gas were measured at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Hydrogen gas was also used as a filling gas for measurements of the average charge state of No-254. Helium and hydrogen gases at pressures from 0.2 mbar to 2.0 mbar were used. A strong dependence of the average charge state on the pressure of the filling gases was observed for both, helium and hydrogen. The influence of this dependence, classically attributed to the so-called "density effect", on the performance of TASCA was investigated. Ca-48+Bk-249 Fusion Reaction Leading to Element Z=117: Long-Lived alpha-Decaying (270)Db and Discovery of Lr-266

The superheavy element with atomic number Z=117 was produced as an evaporation residue in the 48Ca+249Bk fusion reaction at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI Darmstadt, Germany. The radioactive decay of evaporation residues and their α-decay products was studied using a detection setup that allowed measuring decays of single atomic nuclei with half-lives between sub-μs and a few days. Two decay chains comprising seven α decays and a spontaneous fission each were identified and are assigned to the isotope 294117 and its decay products. A hitherto unknown α-decay branch in 270Db (Z=105) was observed, which populated the new isotope 266Lr (Z=103). The identification of the long-live…
