A Feed-Forward Neural Network for Robust Segmentation of Color Images

1999

A novel approach for segmentation of color images is proposed. The approach is based on a feed-forward neural network that learns to recognize the hue range of meaningful objects. Experimental results showed that the proposed method is effective and robust even in presence of changing environmental conditions. The described technique has been tested in the framework of the Robot Soccer World Cup Initiative (RoboCup). The approach is fully general and it may be successfully employed in any intermediate level image-processing task, where the color is a meaningful descriptor.

Ionic liquids/[bmim][N3] mixtures: promising media for the synthesis of aryl azides by SNAr

2008

The nucleophilic aromatic substitution of some activated aryl or heteroaryl halides has been performed in ionic liquid solution, using the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium azide as a nucleophile. The reaction course was studied varying the structures of both substrates and ionic liquids. In particular, in the latter case, the reaction of 2-bromo-5-nitrothiophene was carried out in five different ionic liquids ([bmim][BF 4], [bmim][PF 6], [bmim][NTf 2], [bm 2im][NTf 2], and [bmpyrr][NTf 2]). Finally, for all the substrates considered, a comparison with data obtained in MeOH solution in the presence of NaN 3 was also performed. Data collected indicate that in some cases it is possible to obtain ar…

Predicting hospital associated disability from imbalanced data using supervised learning.

2019

Hospitalization of elderly patients can lead to serious adverse effects on their functional capability. Identifying the underlying factors leading to such adverse effects is an active area of medical research. The purpose of the current paper is to show the potential of artificial intelligence in the form of machine learning to complement the existing medical research. This is accomplished by studying the outcome of hospitalization of elderly patients as a supervised learning task. A rich set of features characterizing the medical and social situation of elderly patients is leveraged and using confusion matrices, association rule mining, and two different classes of supervised learning algo…

IWAL–An Interactive Weather Analysis Laboratory

2015

Abstract Complementary key elements of meteorological education are the provision of a thorough theoretical understanding of the physical laws governing atmospheric motions, and the hands-on investigation and visualization of specific weather systems. However, the latter task is technically challenging, because specific skills must be acquired for flexibly handling meteorological data. Some examples are superimposing satellite pictures and reanalysis fields, producing an isentropic potential vorticity (PV) map, and visualizing a vertical section across a flow feature of interest. Although learning these technical issues has its own merits, it can distract students from investigating the com…

Podstawowe samowartościowanie - walidacja polskiej wersji skali do pomiaru Core Self-Evaluations

2017

Praca przedstawia walidację polskiej wersji skali do pomiaru podstawowego samowartościowania (Core Self-Evaluations – CSES; Judge, Erez, Bono i Thorensen, 2003). Podstawowe samowartościowanie to poglądy danej osoby, dotyczące jej skuteczności, zdolności, wiary we własne siły i pozytywnego nastawienia do siebie i świata.

Gaze position reveals impaired attentional shift during visual word recognition in dysfluent readers

2014

Effects reflecting serial within-word processing are frequently found in pseudo- and non-word recognition tasks not only among fluent, but especially among dyslexic readers. However, the time course and locus of these serial within-word processing effects in the cognitive hierarchy (i.e., orthographic, phonological, lexical) have remained elusive. We studied whether a subject’s eye movements during a lexical decision task would provide information about the temporal dynamics of serial within-word processing. We assumed that if there is serial within-word processing proceeding from left to right, items with informative beginnings would attract the gaze position and (micro-)saccadic eye movem…

Simulation Assessment of Cognitive Readiness

2013

Simulation-based scenarios are used in different approaches for research on complex problem-solving processes. The micro-world approach in this respect has become well known. Despite its attractiveness, there still are concerns about the validity that can be achieved in measuring cognitive functions by means of this method. The chapter refers to an alternative. Quasi-experimental simulations are applied to indicate the individual’s underlying capacity to function in complex, dynamic scenarios. Typically participants get deeply involved in the defined task, resulting in high motivation. The participants’ responses, within the ongoing events, mirror their performance in real-world tasks which…

The Influence of Task and Context-Based Complexity on the Final Choice

2011

In this chapter, we present a new approach for the design of choice task experiments that analyze the final respondent’s choice but not the decision process.1 The approach creates choice tasks with a one-to-one correspondence between decision strategies and the observed choices. Thus, a decision strategy used is unambiguously deduced from an observed choice. Furthermore, the approach systematically manipulates the characteristics of choice tasks and takes into account measurement errors concerning the preferences of the decision makers. We use this approach to generate respondent-specific choice tasks with either low or high complexity and study their influence on the use of compensatory an…

The impact of a concurrent motor task on auditory and visual temporal discrimination tasks

2016

Previous studies have shown the presence of an interference effect on temporal perception when participants are required to simultaneously execute a nontemporal task. Such interference likely has an attentional source. In the present work, a temporal discrimination task was performed alone or together with a self-paced finger-tapping task used as concurrent, nontemporal task. Temporal durations were presented in either the visual or the auditory modality, and two standard durations (500 and 1, 500 ms) were used. For each experimental condition, the participant’s threshold was estimated and analyzed. The mean Weber fraction was higher in the visual than in the auditory modality, but only for…
