The Interplay Between Gesture and Discourse as Mediating Devices in Collaborative Mathematical Reasoning:A Multimodal Approach

2008

This article aims to identify the mathematical reasoning strategies expressed through gestures and speech used by two groups of sixth-grade pupils when solving a task related to the transition between two semiotic representations: figure and Cartesian diagram. The article also identifies the difficulties the pupils meet in the solution process. The analyses of the group dialogues focus particularly on the gesture dimension of deixis. The pupils in both groups have used the following deictic gestures: pointing, held-point, linear point-slide, and circular point-slide in their solution process, while repeated pointing has been identified only in one of the groups. These pointing gestures are …

Collaborative business planning in initial vocational education and training

2015

There is a growing demand to enhance entrepreneurship. This study aims at producing knowledge that can assist teachers in designing and supporting collaborative learning of entrepreneurship in vocational education. A qualitative case study approach was adopted. The outcome of this study provides a better understanding of the factors that hinder and enable collaboration, as related to entrepreneurship education in initial vocational education and training. In practice, nine dimensions of descriptive factors that hindered the exercise and nine distinct descriptive factors that acted as enablers were identified. This study suggests that, although the script of the learning task creates the set…

The role of success expectation and task-avoidance in academic performance and satisfaction: Three studies on antecedents, consequences and correlates

2003

Abstract To investigate the prospective relationships between individuals’ success expectation and task-avoidance, and their academic achievement and satisfaction, 231 students were examined yearly throughout their university careers in Study 1. It was found that students’ success expectation predicted academic achievement and satisfaction; which, in turn, increased their subsequent success expectation. Moreover, task-avoidance predicted low academic achievement and dissatisfaction, which again was predictive of subsequent task-avoidance. In Study 2, the task-avoidant behavior, and pre-examination anxiety, of 198 students who had participated in Study 1 were examined, and compared with thei…

Taking on the “Dark Side”–Coping With Technostress

2020

Technostress is stress that individuals experience due to their use of information technology. It is associated with critical workplace consequences including reduced productivity. While the negative consequences are well known, what is less understood is how individuals can cope with technostress to alleviate them. We report on two studies that explain how organizational IT users can cope with technostress. The first is a qualitative study conducted in the U.K., by interviewing thirty executives/knowledge workers. Here, we identified seven coping behaviors that individuals engage in, in response to technostress. The second is a survey of 846 U.S. employees who use IT in their workplace. He…

Positive emotion induction improves cardiovascular coping with a cognitive task

2021

Feeling positive emotions seems to favour an adaptive cardiovascular response (greater heart rate variability, HRV), associated with improved cognitive performance. This study aims to test whether the induction of a positive emotional state produce such cardiovascular response and therefore, enhance coping and performance in Tower of Hanoi (ToH). Forty-two Participants were randomly distributed into two groups (Experimental and Control). Experimental group was subjected to the evocation of a memory of success, while control group was subjected to an attentional task before performing ToH. Heart Rate Variability (HRV), activity of the zygomatic major muscle (ZEMG) and emotions were measured.…

Immediate elaborated feedback personalization in online assessment

2008

Providing a student with feedback that is timely, most suitable and useful for her personality and the performed task is a challenging problem of online assessment within Web-based Learning Systems (WBLSs). In our recent work we suggested a general approach of feedback adaptation in WBLS and through a series of experiments we demonstrated the possibilities of tailoring the feedback that is presented to a student as a result of her response to questions of an online test, taking into account the individual learning styles (LS), certitude in a response and correctness of this response. In this paper we present the result of the most recent experimental field study where we tested two feedback…

Media and corruption scandals in Spain: plaintiffs, magnifiers, accomplices?

2013

Starting from the idea that journalism is, in liberal democratic regimes tradition, a brake on the arbitrariness of those who govern and that the media, particu…

Lifestyle counseling in type 2 diabetes prevention: a case study of a nurse's communication activity to produce change talk.

2006

As a case study, this article describes a nurse's communication activity, focusing on change talk during lifestyle counseling in primary healthcare. All videotaped counseling sessions with a single patient within a period of two years were transcribed verbatim. In the analysis, an emphasis was placed on the nurse's communication activity that produced change talk, how the nurse initiated change talk, and how the patient received it. The observations provide evidence that the dilemma of simultaneously maintaining professional authority and patient perspective leads to sensitivity in lifestyle counseling. Three categories of change talk were identified: rejected, restrictive, and expansive ch…

The execution of the Grooved Pegboard test in a Dual-Task situation: A pilot study

2020

Background Manual dexterity is an important aspect in everyday life, which is widely studied through the Grooved Pegboard Test (GPT). Since Dual-Tasks (DT) activities are widely investigated and important to simulate everyday life situations, the objectives of the present pilot study were the evaluation of the effect of a cognitive task and a motor task during the performance of the GPT and the feasibility of the GPT in a DT contest. A secondary objective was to evaluate the training effect of the GPT. Methods A total of 31 young adults (20 man and 11 woman, age (SD): 27.7 (2.5)) performed the GPT eight times to understand the presence of a training effect before performing the GPT in DT. T…
